Root Question about updating GAPPS and CM10 ROM

bdesul

Newbie
When you update GAPPS, do you have to backup your system, apps, data?
Or is it an incremental backup that does not require reinstalling data?
Could someone provide me the order of steps to update GAPPS?
I am not sure if you have to wipe cache, davlik cache, system, etc.

Also, could you tell me the recommended procedure for updating CM10 ROM to the latest version?

Thanks alot for any help.

All it does is install some apps on your phone. Usually in the system directory. It will overwrite what is already there.

There should be no need to wipe or backup beforehand although wiping cache/Dalvik is usually a good idea

Not sure about CM10 as I've never flashed it. I have heard though that it has a backup script for Gapps that means you don't have to reflash them after every rom update

Yeah, with CM10, you should just be able to flash a new version on top of the old one with no need to wipe stuff. Unless it specifically states you have to wipe, you should be ok.

Re the GAPPs package, you should just be able to install that over the old one too. No harm in taking a backup before you do though, just in case.

Which device do you own btw?

What's the big improvement in CM10? I see the one for my phone is stable, but reading the promo tells me nothing.

It touts launcher - I bought ADW and like the new update
Browser - I prefer Boat
Music - Don't use that much
Other apps that I have bought replacements for.

I see conflicting reports on battery usage. I'd be interested in that. I'd also be interested in more speed or effieciency opening apps with large databases, although I suspect that might be more hardware and I'm watching the Nexus 4.

bdesul,

I've moved your thread for you to the Evo 4G LTE section so you'll get some additional views and responses from the folks that know your device best.

A week signal will certainly sap a phone's battery :(. Not much you can do to improve the signal / reception unfortunately. You can save a little battery by using wifi where available (it uses less juice than your cell radios do), turning down your screen brightness, avoiding using live wallpapers, etc.

I'm sure you'll get loads of other responses from the helpful and knowledgeable Evo folks here.

Cheers!

El Presidente,
I have an HTC Evo 4g LTe. The battery usage sucks on this phone and I rarely get over 2 bars on 3g service. Anyone got any recs to improve my config? Thanks for input on update question.

Low signal is always going to kill your battery life because the phone is constantly going to be searching for better service. If you have wifi available, I would strongly suggest connecting to it. That will help to alleviate some of the drain.

Other than that, your screen is going to be another major factor to consider for battery life. I'd suggest turning down the brightness whenever possible.

Today was a light usage day for me, but with WIFI on and automatic brightness, I'm over 12 hours off charger with over 75% of my battery left. I'm running the newest CM10

I'm going to further move this into the root section where other rooted users can help you. I'll also PM you the new location of your thread.

Whoops! I should have caught that, Rxpert83! I was focused on the battery question :o.

Thanks for the assist, sir :).

By the way, bdesul, if you'd like, we could split the battery question portion back out to the main section (best of both worlds? ;)).

Let us know!

Cheers!

That sounds good about splitting the battery question out.

I actually just did the update yesterday. Now I am not able to turn on wifi and my already average cell service is even worse.

I wiped the cache and Davlik cache. Then I flashed cm-10.0.0-jewel.zip followed by gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip. Does anyone see any compatibility problems? Any experience on how to fix this issue? I am on a HTC EVO 4g LTE, which I wont recommend to anyone.

Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear that, as my experiences with this device have been great so far.

So you updated to a new cm10?

When flashing a new ROM you have to wipe more than just cache and dalvik cache. You have to wipe everything except internal and external storage. And if you're s-on you'll have to fastboot flash the kernel.

So if I redo the flashing process via bootloader, preceded by your above wiping instructions, will I be able to salvage it?

Could flashing a custom radio help with my reception issues that I have experienced whether I have had CM10 or the stock ROM. I have had the issue since Day 1. I live in Denver, so it is not like I am constantly in rural areas where reception could be spotty. My wife has an iPhone and seems to have good service with our carrier (Sprint). My previous phone was just an LG Rumor Touch. I didnt have data service but my cell service was good.

updating your firmware could improve your radio signals, just remember once you do you can't downgrade or go back.....unless you want to brick your phone. LOL

and you should always wipe well before flashing a rom. please read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...g-dummies-guide-lazypanda-racun-unlocked.html. skip the first post and go to the second post for more root info. especially read about TWRP, Nandroid backups, and Flashing sections.

+1 ocnbrze :) and emphasis on the word "could".

I've tried to do before/after tests of my signal strength on a few of my devices when flashing a new baseband/radio. The differences were always miniscule.

I'm guessing that most of the time, updates to radios typically include bug fixes, better tower recognition, 3G/4G switching, etc.--things behind the scenes that make your experience better, but not necessarily in terms of actual signal strength.

</two-cents> :p :)
