Root Quick question: what to wipe when flashing a rom?

particularly aosp mod. I've flashed it before but I'm not sure if I wiped all that I needed to and maybe that caused the bad battery life.

It depends upon what ROM you are currently running, and what ROM you want to flash.

If you are flashing a newer build of the same ROM, you only need to wipe cache and dalvik cache (and on some ROMs, wiping cache automatically wipes dalvik cache).

If you are changing to a completely different ROM, you should wipe cache and dalvik cache, then format boot, system, data, and cache.

Usually if you are having a problem like battery issues or other "system" type problems, formating system fixes it. If you are having problems with apps or the Market, formating data fixes it. If you are having trouble booting, formating boot fixes it. Formating cache usually fixes the misc other issues people have, and these same issues are normally fixed automatically by one or two reboots.

If I have a problem after flashing a ROM, I do a full wipe and format, just to be sure. This can be a pain since wiping data means reinstalling all your apps, but it is free software after all. ;)

Hello
I am just wondering why not wipe everything??? Yes all apps are gone and email settings etc. but dont you feel it gives a better and cleaner install??

JerryScript -does that mean if I'm having market issues, i can just boot into recovery and format data, then restart the phone and that's it? Or do I have to reflash the rom? What exactly will formatting data get rid of?

Formating data will get rid of all apps, including some if not all system apps, so if you are formating data, you may as well format it all, then reflash.

Blah, ok. I was hoping to not have to do that *again* (twice already since market issues started and still having probs) but I guess there is no way around it.

BTW-kudos on the new rom, i just saw the thread. I'll def check it out when I get more comfortable with roms and have a bigger sdcard (for the all important backups!) :)

Thanks ;)

Your market problems are probably due to running out of space. Even if you show plenty of space available, the way Android allocates things may make it think you are running too low to install an app. Remember, it's determining algorithms are based on apps being on the phone itself, so there are some instances where it doesn't take into account apps being installed/moved to the sdcard.

Hmm...interesting. Thanks for the info. The problem I'm having is very odd (to me at least). Some/most apps download and/or update fine, but others-gmail, angry birds, go sms pro to name a few will download fine, then fail on installation. I get the error message "package file is invalid"
With go sms, i can just uninstall it and re-install the new version, and it works just fine. Haven't tried with angry birds, and obviously can't uninstall gmail.
I've tried reflashing, both with and without the new market patch for Harmonia (which never once got the new market working), deleting the market apk and restoring it (app only, no data) with Titanium Backup...nothing seems to work. :(

Try going into recovery and wiping and formatting everything necessary 2 or 3 times before installing the ROM. I had the same problem. xionia was not thoroughly wiping the data and that helped me. Wipe cache partition, wipe Dalvik cache, wipe data/system reset. Format boot, system, data, cache. I paused a couple of minutes in between sets of wipes. But that's just me. I hope this helps you get the market working. If it does, you might want to backup that install, then delete the old backup. Or try the Bumblebee ROM if you get a chance in between all this just to check it out. Almost the same app space but I've got mine(backed up in recovery right now in case I need to use the Bluetooth a lot) Overclocked to 787Hz-480Hz. The battery doesn't get hot(temp widget)at that speed for some reason. Angry Birds is Super Smooth, and Fast. Harmonia even at that speed left Angry Birds laggy. Hope everything works out for you. One other question. Did you change your theme? If you did, wait after you install the ROM to see if that fixes things. Once you reboot twice then re-flash the theme.

Thanks Andy, i never thought about multiple wipes, even tho I do remember reading that somewhere now that I think about it. I don't have any themes, so I know that's not it. I might try not using the new market patch this next time, although I had the problem before the patch. (whole reason I wanted to try the new market in the first place.)
I can't really make a whole bunch of backups at the moment as I only have maybe 90mgs of space left on my sdcard, but I def want to try different ROMs sometime in the future, for sure.

I thought you were going to get a bigger SD card. I'm seeing 8G's for under $25.00 where I'm at. Well when you do ,try the BACKside ROM. Other than The Bluetooth not working, and not being able to turn the phone off when charging(I just turn the screen off),Its the best ROM I've seen and JerryScript and Blarfie are making improvements constantly.

Yeah, I am getting a bigger one, but an extra $20-25 is actually had to come by for me right now. I came within a day of having my electricity cut of last month :/ I worked alot of overtime the last 2 weeks tho, so maybe soon. That and I have to get the boyfriend to get the computer up and running again.
But, yeah, I totally plan on trying the new rom once all that gets taken care of :)

I just got a 4 gig class 4 micro sdhc card off ebay for $6 shipped. Of course with my type of luck... mine arrived broken. 8 gig is about $12. 16 gig around $20. The higher the class rate, the faster the card is. I know money is tight all around, But it is an alternative. ;)

I have a class 2 or 4 8G SD card but what is helping me is SD-Booster. I have the cache size set to 2048 and reboot times(79 apps on SD card) are around 2min30sec. That's with 7 screens with a picture on each one. I tested the write/read speeds and got:5.5MB/s write;15.1MB/s read.

I got this from Wiki. Looks like going from class 2 to class 4 your doubling your speed. Supposed to be anyways. Class 2 are a dime a dozen, but I'm willing to spend a few dollars more for twice the speed. Can't afford a class 10... but that would be awesome!!! :D

Class Speed
Class 2 2 MB/s
Class 4 4 MB/s
Class 6 6 MB/s
Class 10 10 MB/s

Meh, I've heard way too many things about fake cards coming from ebay...id rather pay a little more and be sure of what I'm getting, but that's just me. Then again, that's also why I don't have a bigger card yet...

Don't forget to try SD-Booster from the market. Set the cache size to 2048 ,check set on boot, hit apply button. I probably have a class 4 and It now writes at 5.5MB/s,but most importantly it now reads at 15.1MB/s. This means from power on, to being able to use all functions is only 2min 30sec. That's with all the stuff I have installed.
