I recommend carrying a cane... if you look slightly incapacitated, you might increase your odds of getting a seat, and you could always be 'clumsy' with cane and beat the crap out of those jerks.

I feel I do a pretty good job. I always show up early and there's times where I'll stay extra time for free to help them out (10 minutes max, don't want them to get in trouble)
