Random Thought Thread

It's part of life. Anything worthwhile is never easy. Just enjoy being a student with fixed breaks lol.

I do want to cycle a lot lot more. Maybe I'll start a club at school and dedicate good time there. That'll be good because other colleges will look at it and probably be impressed. Maybe not but its something worth checking out.

Who wants to cycle in the winter. I doubt its going to be a good idea because we can't actually do it the whole year. Just part of it.

I remember reading about a group who built an indoor trail course inside of an old warehouse so mountain bikers could get a ride in when it was snowing outside.

Oh that sounds nice. No head wind getting in the way.

Say I was thinking and this is a random thought. Tell me if you think its a dumb idea. I live in Chicago. My parents live in Michigan. I was thinking one day this summer I will ride my bike to their house. Almost 200 miles away.

Of course with proper precaution. Having the right foods (as I'll burn almost 8000 calories) material to fix the bike, and some extra battery power to guide me there. And back up maps of course. Oh and lots and lots if water. Like a lot of listers. Like 15 listers.

That's a heck of a ride; you will want to train for something like that.

Do you read bicycling magazines like Bike? That one, if I recall correctly, has some resources for finding local cycling clubs and such. Starting a club at school is a good idea, but I think you would benefit from having a seasoned cyclist as a mentor.

Training. Yes! And lots and lots of practice.

I just bought this app on my phone and its cool because there are routes around Chicago that other members of the app created. I could ride some of those routes as motivation. Some of them are like 35 miles long. But that's only like a 2 to 3 hour ride. If I were to ride to my parents. That would be a whooping 15 hours. That needs some training and lots and lots of planning and back up planning. And lots of money because I'll have to eat a LOT. Burning 8000 calories in a single day. I'll need to eat like 9000+ calories. That let alone is not easy. So training is good.

As for clubs. You know I'm not taking any summer classes at school but I can still be part of my school. I'll talk to my advisor about a club like that. But if its not possible my local (kinda local because its 12 miles away) bike shop has a club. But I highly doubt that any of them will be young newbs like myself.

Haha maybe if your house or some local public place is around the route I'm going on. My parents live close to Indiana so I won't be that north into Michigan. Near Coldwater the live.

Actually, a 200 mile ride is not considered that big a deal. Each year Putnam County New York has either the 'Tour de Put' or the cycling classic event. This year it will include a timed 100 mile event. Here is some info about it.

If you can do 200 miles, I say go for it. You should be able to do it in an 8 hour day. :)

dern!:p they are south of me...

btw
there are a few metro parks in my area that have cycling clubs...maybe look into that option ?
I did the trail at one of them near me once....but it was really really hard...so:rolleyes::p

Just remember that everyone starts out as a newb, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

It's some twenty-five years since I did the 30 mile commute to work on my bike once a week, but it is good exercise, and while I would prefer a trail to the road, I do miss riding on a regular basis.

I just wish there were better scenery where I live... might better motivate me to get on my mountain bike on the evenings or early morning.

I agree. The world record for riding around the world (18,000 miles + 24,900 miles total ) is 92 days. That's 225 miles a day. 200 may not be a big deal but for 92 days straight... That's a big deal.

But only the professionals and experienced cyclist do that. They do serious training.

Oh and they don't dope like the biggest cheater ever.

30 miles to work. Quite the dedication. I was considering riding 13 miles to school and 13 miles back 2 times a week then I reconsidered because when the snow comes. Then I have to drive. Guess who will have to put gas in the car... Guess who doesn't want to pay... ME. So I'll ride. To the campus closer to me.

I want to cycle to see the world at the speed of the bike. Beautiful.

My dog won't shut up. Hes been barking at the wind for an hour now.

Well, like I said, I would do that maybe once a week; I could afford to put gas in my car, I just liked biking, though that return trip after ten hours of work was a bear.

Now I live seventeen and a half miles from work, but there isn't a decent biking route, I'd probably end up with some twenty miles commute. I'm much older, fatter, and the air here is dry as hell (not to mention temps in the 80s and 90s most of the year), so I'd have do some training of my own before trying to commute now.

Sounds like a challenge. You should go for it.

I have a lot to learn if I do this ride. I'll have to go from newb to pro in a summer. And spend a lot of money on equipment. I'll make it my goal to train for this this summer.

This Swedish singer Anna Ternheim has a really nice voice. Just ignore the ringing phone at the beginning lol.

I really love iced coffee..

I can drink the whole gallon.

I can't wait to start training. My birthday is coming up and I a! Going to get a new bike. I don't know what kind though, so I have been looking at bikes like non stop all week. Their so expensive.

I use to compete many years ago, 1987-91. My ride was a Colnago with SLX tubing with Cinelli bar/stem/seat post, Shimano 600 Ultegra and Mavick Aero rims/18mm Continental tires. I have no idea what tech is out there these days. Being in the welding industry I work with someone who has built custom frames for very high profile riders.
