I'm no longer up in the area, but San Francisco has the cable cars. (More of a tourist attraction now, but still kinda cool) Interesting engineering for the day, and am lead to believe the drivers / operators still have a fair bit of genuine control / responsibility for safe operation. Steep hills, relatively primitive braking systems; My memory is of multiple redundant systems, including one "Full desperation, God help us emergency system" Which can make a real mess of things if ever deployed. Always wanted to tour the underground vaults where the pulley wheels and power distribution happens. Either that or take a midnight picnic with a like minded girl, to watch them replace the cables
. They do it on a fairly regular basis, in the dead of night.
