Why did my washing machine die AND [unrelated to it] there's a water leak in my backyard? :(

Plumber is here now for the leak; new washer arrives day after tomorrow. All I'm seeing right now: $$$$$$ :paperbagdroid:

Our furnace (20 years old) went fritzy and while I'm somewhat handy, the part wasn't in stock anywhere. Could have called a shop to come out (some repair shops keep the more common items on hand, but won't sell them unless they install as part of a service call, so we decided to just "chill" a few days while the part arrived. Would have been nicer if it weren't over a weekend when you're home all day, but still...we save at least $200, and that doesn't even include what we saved by not running the furnace for a few days. Luckily we live in a part of the country where it wasn't a dire issue, but low 50s in the house is still pretty chilly.

Good luck with it all, MoodyBlues.
I as well am in a country house.

Interestingly, when it comes time to renew your car insurance, and have to declare a claim, so they can shaft you, there is no category for rodent damage. Closest I could see was "malicious damage".

I managed to a nice fine crack in my Galaxy Tab A (2017) 8" tablet... it's barely a year old.

So far everything is working, but I'm going to be really upset if I have to replace it so soon.

The crack is barely noticeable, and I can ignore it for the most part. I'm just worried that whatever I did to crack it will happen again and I will really break it next.

Meanwhile, I am debating with myself over installing another OS on my laptop.

Depends on where you live. Many states require at least minimum coverage and in many the results of a violation are pretty draconian.
Even though the closest place is a few miles away, we do not get down there unless, its an emergency anyways. It is hard to remember why though, but it has not been lost, broken or even shattered lately... hmmm... though save a lot of money... I should get into it soon.
