Help Random unresponsive screen after JB?

In addition to disabling google now, I have done two more things now.

- disabled Google Chrome and switched to using Android browser. Google Chrome requirements are too high for this phone.
- switched to holo launcher which is again much lighter than the TouchWiz launcher.

Phone is now working almost as smooth as ICS.

I finally got fed up with my device freezing and had vm send me a replacement. I've had it a couple days and so far 0 freeze ups. I think it was the ota update that screwed this phone over or something else I honestly have no clue. But if anything I suggest getting them to send a replacement good luck to you guys!

Same here, the last forced reboot corrupted my sd card, so I called VM support. Got the replacement on 6/28 and so far, no strange behavior....

Well, scratch that... Replacement phone stopped responding today. Odd that it went from 6/28 - 7/2 without any issues...

Do you have anything in mind that might have caused the issue?

I have no idea. Got the replacement phone on a Friday and set it up over the weekend. Used it quite a bit off and on while setting it up. Hardly used it Mon/Tue and went to use it on Wed and couldn't unlock the screen.

Did you use the "Holo Launcher" or the "Holo Launcher HD"?

Thanks

Did you try disabling the lockscreen completely? Within a few hours of just using the SGR OotB yesterday, the lockscreen froze. Disabled it, and haven't had the issue since.

I didn't disable the lock screen. There are no problems left after disabling Google now, chrome, and switching to holo launcher hd. I have rooted and disabled several more bloatware but that is all.

The bloatware was causing the unresponsiveness issue the issue the whole time? That's... kind of sad. Lol.

I think the main problem is 768 MB RAM of Reverb. 1GB is generally the minimum amount that JB runs comfortably. Bloatware becomes especially critical when RAM is small.

So I did all recommended by mrg666 (besides rooting the phone). I do not disable the lock screen.

I got a text message, and I unlocked the the screen by selecting the message icon and swiping. I read the message and locked the phone. The next time I tried to unlock, the screen was frozen.

Is there a way to disable the message icon on the lock screen?

Not sure if this will help but I fully disabled the lock screen and instead i use the free MagicLocker app. Things seem to work okay and have been doing this for over a month now. Think I had one lockup in that time which is good.

Just a suggestion. YRMV

Using a lightweight alternate launcher, check.
Greenify all things Greenifiable, check.
Disabled hotword detection, check.
Disabled Google Now, check.
Using an alternate lockscreen, check.
Disabled stock lockscreen, check.

It actually literally just now occurred to me to disable the stock lockscreen now that I'm using an alternate one, so I won't know for a while if that fixes the problem or not.

In case it doesn't, how do you disable Chrome? I already prefer to use Dolphin, so that won't be an issue for me.

Thanks.

In another post I think you indicated you are using lnk2sd. Open lnk2sd select chrome then select action. Select freeze.
That's it. Program will be disabled. If you run into issues just unfreeze. This is a safe alternative to actually removing bloatware. If after some time you decide the app is not needed for the phone to function properly you can select uninstall instead of freeze.
This process works with some other apps also (mybackup, titanium backup, etc) but does require root.

Hope this helps

Indeed! :D

Is this a Staples commercial? 'Cause that was easy.

Well, Link2SD also requires root, so I think that's already covered. :p

Hope this helps

We'll see!

Thanks.

I tried everything I could come up with to try and fix the random lock ups on wake up. Absolutely nothing fixed it. I tried factory resets, alternate lock screens, no lock screen, disabling programs, etc etc.

This is completely and totally unacceptable for a phone update to cause this. My phone became unreliable at best causing me to miss numerous calls for work.

I went back to ICS. I can use my phone again reliably. Samsung needs to fix this ASAP.

Hi guys, I have a few minutes to check into the recovery issue here. I need a rooted user to pull the recovery from a JB device and answer a few questions. User should be able to type, read and run the risk of breaking your device and have adb and ODIN/drivers etc. Hit the link to IRC if you fit the description. Type interloper+tab and I'll get alerted. If I don't respond, ask Shabbypenguin to message me. Or, if you want to Hangouts, I can do that too.

I need a rooted user to pull the recovery from a JB device and answer a few questions.

YES PLEASE!
Someone with a Rooted OTA JB 412 Reverb PLEASE PULL the Recovery.

It's been verified that the OTA 412 JB Update Writes a NEW RECOVERY during the OTA process.
Getting our hands on that Recovery will HOPEFULLY help ME/OTHERS with OutOfBox Reverbs to get into CWM, in turn gain Root for our OutOfBox JB 412 Reverbs...

As for the FREEZING issues,
My Issue was no Response to my fingers on the TouchScreen at all @ LockScreen, forced to pull Batt.
I have OutOfBox JB 412 Reverb with NO ROOT, and I Resolved it like this:

-FIRST, I Cleared All cache/data for Google in System Settings/Applications.
-Then I Opened Google (went thru the setup motions), DISABLED HOTWORD DETECTION.

-Disabled 'Block Offensive Words' too, as I definitely say those MORE than "Google"
-Finally. and I don't think it's necessary, but I'm now Using APEX Launcher (Apex always been most stable for me on most phones/ROMs)
-If still having issues, try clearing the Cache/Data for the Launcher you're using.
-If still having issues, just factory reset the phone... Backup/Restores after Updates in general can be flaky, start Fresh, and mos def disable Hotword Detection after.

Also, just throwing it out there, but have any of you with this issue messed with FaceLock settings at all?
I have NOT, but just wondering if that's a factor since it's a new feature...

Someone previously mentioned using Link2SD on their Reverb?
Yeah Definitely can cause Freezing Issues All Around on any Phone, not just at Lock Screen...
And from what i read, i thought that Generally, any/all scripts for Apps2 EXTx SD don't work yet for Reverb???
Personally, I thought the Reverb had enough Internal space for apps, so I never investigated...

Again, this worked on my OutOfBox JB 412 Reverb with NO ROOT.
My Issue was no Touch Response at all from Lock Screen, forced to pull Batt.
My symptoms didn't show for about 2 days or so on the New Phone, but when the Screen started freezing, the Issues STOPPED as soon as i Cleared all Data/Cache, and Disabled Hotword Detection in Google Settings.

Hope this helps!

I have had great results recently after I not only installed a different launcher, but then froze/disabled both the stock launcher and Trebuchet along with some other things I outlined in the bloatware thread. Haven't frozen yet since.

To all you still having LockScreen Freezing Issues after Disabled Hotword Detection in Google Settings
Has anyone tried Car Home?

Just a thought...

There is a new Kernel available for the Reverbs that should help if you're rooted

[KERNEL] MiRaGe - optimized SPH-M950 (icon) kernel for stock JB ROM - 09042013

All credit goes to mrg666 for this kernel.
THANK HIM for his work
