Help Randomly Turning Off?

Just to put my two peneth in the mix.

I had SOD a few times when I first got my phone. Shortly after I got it the wifi stopped working - I was connected but it wouldn't load pages.

I sent my Ace back to Samsung repair twice for the wifi problem with no effect, so I switched my wifi off and just used my 3G package data. My 13 yr old son suggested a wifi repair app - low and behold my wifi was working again!!

Now I find that my phone is shutting down again - hence the google to here and it's only now that the penny has dropped that the shut downs didn't happen at all for the 6 / 8 weeks that I had wifi off. It's only happened since I have got my wifi on again now it's working.

So in my non techie opinion that it must have something to do with the wifi.

Just got my galaxy ace yesterday and the SOD occurred numerous times in last two days. Had wifi on constantly. Just tried the *#*#526#*#* code and will update if SOD reoccurs or after a week if it doesnt.

Ok so the SOD has just reoccurred, I left the wifi on and turned the sleep policy back to when screen is off so unfortunately the code does not offer a solution. Il try the proscribed workaround of leaving wifi off when not using, and changing the sleep policy for when i am. This does not overly put me out as I have set it so that the apps are not constantly using background data (settings->accounts and syncs). This will hopefully keep down my 3G usage. Fingers crossed this workaround works for me. Good luck :)

Hey guys

I found the source of the problem

It's some application (Probbebly google synchronisation service) that checks if your wifi is on, not if it's connected

If it fails to sync it goes into an infinite loop which it can't get out by itsself.

Couse of the loop, your phone's processor is using a lot of battery. also the massive processor usage fails get put the phone out of sleep. thats what couses the black screen.

If it happens. don't wait untill u can charge it. this will ruin your battery. remove the battery and reboot. immidiatly turn off your wifi. if you don't do this it will happen again.

Possible Fixes:
-Turn off wifi before u get out of range.
-Wait for another damn update
-Find some app that does it for you

@stefanhp thanks for sharing your info. Could you tell us how you came to this conclusion, that way it will be easier to check it and find a solution.

Well at first:
i noticed everytime i went out of the house. my phone had this crash

i tried serveral things
like
-bluetooth on/off
-wifi on/off
-packed data on/off

i found out that the error was caused by the wifi

second i noticed that the crash only happend if it couldn't connect.

everytime i unplugged my router, my phone had this crash
also everytime i walked out of the house, my phone had this crash

i tried disabling multiple services

and sometimes my phone worked for hours.
but after serveral hours, it had the crash again

i tried a network sniffer to check out the packets

always the last packed it could send was heading to the google ip then it shut down

My line of thoughts, exactly.
I can second all of the above symptoms, except I did not use sniffer to check the packets.

It would be great if someone could trace the source of packet that caused the SOD, though. I'm afraid that knowing it's a Google IP does not help much, since many apps are tied to our Google accounts, so any of them could be trying to verify something with Google before doing something else.

For now, it seems that 'Auto WiFi Toggle' free app (see @ Market) is adequate temporary workaround for me: I have it set to 'WiFi Auto Off', which catches the WiFi disconnect event (when I get out of range) , and then turns off WiFi after predefined time period (0 sec in my case).
Without it, SOD happened every time I left WiFi on and went out of range of AP I was connected to.

Cheers

UPDATE

From 19June to 02Aug, no SOD using this method (WI-FI KEEP ALIVE application)

My update is that retailer refused to swap, so it went to the local Samsung techs to 'repair.'

It has come back today worse than it went in. First SoD was less than 24 hours after it came back from repair, and I've also had to do two other reboots due to text message not sending and WiFi not connecting.

My SoD today was when I was out and about too, so not even at home like the previous ones...! This was with Launcher Pro and Juice Defender installed. I will install load monitor and the WiFi Alive apps too, and see if that makes a difference over the next 48 hours.

I am going to contact Samsung here to see if they will replace directly, seeing as how retailer won't (and I can sympathise with them - NZ consumer law states they must provide a remedy, and 'repair' is included - but because its a known fault in the phone itself, I think Samsung should replace this themselves.)

My update is that I sent a snotty email to Samsung NZ outlining all my issues.

They phoned the other day, and talked me through some fixes. One of them was to switch to 2G networks which uses less battery, and also fixes the problem I'd been having with SMS not sending.

Then he told me where to find the WiFi policy, and suggested I might not need the 3rd party Wi Fi Keep Alive app. So I switched that to never sleep, but since then I've had SoD twice in as many days.

Jule, mine is unrelated to being on my person, and I could say that of all the times I've experienced it, its been in my hand or sitting on a table/bench or in a bag - so nowhere near me. And I do carry it in my back pocket if I am wearing jeans.

So, today I have reinstalled the WiFi Keep Alive, along with settings described here by TotoyKamote (THANK YOU!) as this does seem to be effective.

The guy at Samsung NZ said they were hoping for an update in two weeks, which would be downloadable via Kies - but then my phone doesn't like Kies, so that's a whole other issue.....

I should add that I do have Launcher Pro installed, but just because I like the format of it more than Samsung home.... but have ditched Juice Defender and Load Monitor, as I think that simply using the WiFi Keep Alive has been enough to keep it from going into SoD, and using 2G most of the time instead of 3G when out and about is making a huge difference to battery consumption.

KiwiChickI: I have had all the problems detailed in this thread and have tried various settings and have found using 2G is a real must but have struggled with the WiFi setting have just downloaded "WiFi Keep Alive" can you let me know what settings you have used from their options. Thanks

I've had problems with SOD since I purchased this phone and initially suspected the firmware, but still had the same problems after upgrading to Gingerbread v2.3.4, I also suspected the SD card or a certain app, but after removing and testing I still got the damn SOD.

After trying the 'Auto WiFi Toggle' app I have not had a SOD since, so it must be the WIFI as mentioned, thanks bocko :D

My SOD has this behaviour:
I tried these SD cards:
8-GB class 4
2-GB (SAMSUNG – included with phone)

with Firmware S5830XWKAA (Froyo 2.2.1)
I have NO SOD!!!

with KPH (2.3.4) and KPN (2.3.3):
- inserted SD CARD, WIFI ON – SOD
- inserted SD CARD, WIFI OFF – NO SOD
- SD CARD removed, WIFI ON – NO SOD
- SD CARD removed, WIFI OFF – NO SOD

It seems that there is some problem in KPN (2.3.3) and KPH (2.3.4) firmware because i have NO SODs with S5830XWKAA.

You're welcome. And no SOD here since my last post (over a week ago). But I still consider it a temporary workaround.

One more thing.
Sometimes, SOD is not really a SOD. It happened to me several times: menu key won't wake up the phone [you curse the SOD, life & everything, pressing it repeatedly several times], but short-pressing the power button wakes phone up just as it should. And after that, menu key is acting like a screen capture key for some time...

Wierd, or what?
[Ace on 2.3.3. XXKPE, updated through KIES]

Had my phone delivered this week and it's been having random reboots and at least one SOD daily. Hoping that the "Auto WiFi Toggle" will work.

I flashed KPO and NO SOD for 3 days.

I hope this is the final solution.

Wifi keep alive does not work, tried the settings as recommended here and have several SODs over the last few days.

Sorry to hear that.

Please be sure to set as following (Advanced settings):
WiFi Auto On - disabled
WiFi Auto Off - enabled
Check Policy -> Always
Waiting time: 0 sec

Still works for me...
Let's hope that KPO upgrade is the final solution as mentioned by Dawerius...

EDIT: Sorry, i mixed up WiFi Keep Alive with my advice of using Auto WiFi toggle

i was facing the same problem, a few things i did to get rid of that problem was.

- never leave wifi-on on your device.
- never leave your phone on charge for more than 4-5 hours.
- upgrading to gingerbird permanently solved this problem.
