Rant about the 4th key (search button) on EVO

Yeah dude, i use it all the time. press once for voice search, long press for multitask manager.

Just may be my favorite button, after the power button of course.
 
I don't think I've ever hit it accidentally but I need to try to remember to use it, would be useful. Also have forgotten to use voice search and input after using it a lot at first due to the novelty..but it is more than a novelty it works great.

+1, it's a generic search button that works in tons of apps, doesn't just search google but your entire phone.
 
What everyone else said :) I removed the search widget from my screen due to that button. I also use chompSMS, and if you hold down the button, it brings up the option for a quick SMS. Very handy.
 
I never knew about the long press. Cool! I just took the google search widget off, too. I had it on my last screen. This is MUCH simpler.
 
Actually thank you for bringing this to my attention. I've never used it before but I was using the google search widget. I can get rid of the google search widget and use the designated home button instead.

This button does have use!

Most used button on my Evo. Hold down for a couple seconds.. then I pretty much tell it what I want to do. "Call John's cell", "Call home" etc... voice dialing is very nice. Any search via web or emails, voice to text for text messages, emails and the list goes on. Best button on the phone imo.

google search????? haven't used it once.... only a huge nucense when typing and accidently hitting it..... would be better served as a media button that transfered the phone into (dare i say it) an "ipod" like screen with awesome customizable greatness for music

WOW? really?
This button is a MUST HAVE.

#1)it eliminates having to scroll thorugh all the screens to find your short cut. Just tap it, type in the first few letters of your app and bam it brings up a list or the single app, then click it. I hardly even use my shortcuts on my screens, i just type in "Int" for internet or "Ma" for mail etc...

#2)its great for when ur searching your contacts... click on PEOPLE, click the search button type the first few letters of the person u want and BAM, the list shows people/person with that name or characters. God forbid you are scrolling through your contacts.... ;p

#3)On the web browser, it acts as an instant google search bar, just tap it when ur at any website and a search dialog comes up, just type what u want and hit enter. Bam! or if you are in the web browser and want to access an app quick, double tap it and follow instructions for #1 :P

#4)Hold it down to activate Google voice search.


IM sure there are other features i missed. But these are enough for me to say OMG... i love it
 
I find it both useful and annoying at the same time.. when I want to search it is convenient and handy. When I hit it accidentally like when playing a game etc it is annoying. I wish there was an easy way to configure that buttons behavior via the phone settings or app.

Would love love to be able to disable it in certain apps and/or change its sensitivity so that it takes a deliberate push instead of an accidental swipe..

Hey app developers, I'd pay for this....
 
it and the Back key are my L / R buttons in SNESoid

didn't know it did all this magical stuff though.

i knew i could hold it down for google voice, but now it seems more amazing, i'm stoked.
 
thanks for all the input, i use it to get directions or search stuff on the web (like when my friends tell me to meet them at a bar i dont get crappy directions from them, i just say the name and town and poof its right there)

im going to try to use it to acquire the apps or shortcuts or stuff like that.

this also opened my eyes to voice - text in my text'ing and driving adventures, i found it super hard to text accuratly while driving until i started useing the voice input
 
If you use Handcent for messages its awesome... You can hold down the search button & it'll bring up the dialog to send messages quick. But yeah overall I can't even remember now how many times I have accidentally pressed that button.
