The way that China Mobile are still playing Sparky's Magic Piano to anyone who calls me. I didn't choose it, and everyone else I know has a normal ring tone.

Can you change the ringtone in your phone so that it is a global setting for all incoming calls? Just the name Sparky's Magic Piano has weird connotations, if you know what I mean (hmm...). I've never been to China, so I don't know how their smartphones or tower systems work. I wish you the best of luck in figuring things out, and I hope you're enjoying the culture there - I imagine that it must be very interesting, indeed. LW

I'm sure it was very innocent in 1947 though.. LOL. Wasn't there a sequel, Sparky's Magic Organ or something?

Most people in China have never heard of it. Just that a fellow English teacher, who's Mongolian, heard it when he rang me and was asking what it was about..."Sparky was a little boy about your age...." That's when I first became aware of China Mobile's little joke...if you will.

Phones and networks in China work very much the same as anywhere else...Although we have provincial roaming, where if I go to say Beijing with my Xilinhot SIM it costs me much more for calls, and is reason why most Chinese phones take two SIMs.

Sparky's Magic Piano is being played by China Mobile to any callers that phone me, I don't hear it myself. Best I can get out of them is that some subscribers get a normal ringing tone while some get music. Previously it was playing Mongolian grasslands folk songs.

BTW LW ever seen our ghost cities?

Oh - I understand now, mikedt - it's a musical 'fugue' that plays to the caller trying to call you. Over here in the USA, phone owners have that feature; for instance, when I call some people - a voice-over will say, "...please enjoy this music from the subscriber while we connect your call..." Usually, my ears are assaulted by music that I wouldn't listen to on a bet (lmao), as I'm not a big fan of hip hop, screech metal, or country music. As a professional musician myself, my tastes tend to run counter to young pop culture anyway. Maybe you can see if you can put your own music in for the connection wait. Or, the local grassland folk music... good luck, and stay in touch. LW

Would be nice to have the Mongolian folk music back for my callers. There's no choice though from what I can see. Myself I'd rather not be playing any music at all, one thing music sounds like absolute crap when played via a telephone call. Just rather have a normal ringing sound.

Mike, those are called ringback tones here int he states. They need to be turned on / off or changed with the carrier. The ringing / ringback tone a caller hears comes from the carrier while they locate your phone and /or wait for you to press send to connect the call.

I take it some phones don't allow modifying the ringtones/sounds by just updating the ringtones dir? That'd be a bummer, I sure added my own. One of the first things I did.

I've always called it ring-tone or ringing-tone, along with dial-tone, busy-tone, engaged-tone. Which indeed are generated in the central office, or telephone exchange, or switching centre, or whatever you want to call it. :)

Oh yeh, I've done that...currently it's the Ying Tong Song by The Goons. :D But it's the ringing sound or "ring-back tone" that the caller hears, while they're waiting for me to answer. Aparently someone at China Mobile likes cheesy 1940s children's stories, probably get Tubby The Tuba next.

And if anyone wishes to hear it, it's +86 yadda yadda yadda

AH, gotcha. I guess I need to go and take "Remedial Reading 101". ;)

I'll just leave this here...

Well I just found out something very "interesting". I am applying to college and I called them today to see the progress of my application, turns out that they didn't get my HS transcripts. But that is not why I'm angry, because the school I went to didn't send it in, even thought I faxed in (twice) and mailed in a form requesting them, and they say "Oh I'm sorry we didn't get them". Well **** you to. Now I have to wait even longer for the interview for the college. (I sent the faxes and mail in 2 months ago)

"Yes, hello. I am calling you to inform you that I have faxed you a copy of an email I addressed to you. The original is due to arrive tomorrow via postal services."

I know I say I'm a big fan of Google, but damn does Google Maps suck at driving navigation. Most of the time they can't find a route or even the location of the place I'm looking for. It can't find my college or my eye doctor. It can't load maps on a 3G connection.

Anyone else feel the same way ?

Nope, I have had better success with gmaps versus my Garmin gps unit. I don't know, maybe it's the network where you are.

Google Maps works and can load maps and data on 3G. Would be kind of useless if it couldn't, especially when you're trying to find your way to somewhere and there's no WiFi available. Is there an option in it, whether to use cellular data or not?

I've been quite impressed by Google Maps recently, even has some of the very small grasslands roads in it now.

Probably because your 3G data connection is so slow. I would be raising hell with Boost, those speeds are ridiculous. Even throttled speeds with Cricket are way faster than what you posted the other day.

They started throttling to 2G/EDGE speeds if you go over your 3G limit. 8kb/s anyone? Same thing with T-Mobile. On Cricket the throttled speeds were amazing! I had to leave Cricket though..they're CDMA and I can't use a Sensation on Cricket :v sadly.

Anyways my rant today is that throttling T-Mobile does. After 500MB, you're throttled back to EDGE speeds. Why? I pay for 5GB, I should get 5GB on 4G.
