My cookbooks and quilting books are not in meters or metric. Fabric is sold by the yard, and the cookbooks all use cups, tbs, tsps, etc
American recipes always confuse me when they talk about cups: what does that mean?! I have lots of cups, all of them different sizes. Even when I try to look up what a 'standard' cup is in litres or grams, I get entirely different answers from different sources.
Having said that, we Brits have to be the most confused about measurements. We measure:
Someone's height in feet and inches but a building's height in metres
Someone's weight in stones and pounds but postage in kilos and millimetres (really - size matters)
Fuel efficiency in miles per gallon but fuel in litres
Speed in miles per hour but car length in centimetres
Engine output in horsepower but capacity in litres
Distance in miles but building materials in millimetres
Land in acres but flooring in square metres
Beer in pints but wine, spirits and soft drinks in millilitres
Hot weather in fahrenheit but cold weather in celcius
And finally, produce in pounds and pints
and kilos and litres
