"When Black Friday comes... I'm gonna dig myself a hole... gonna lay down in it 'til I've satisfied my soul..." - Steely Dan, Katy Lied
C3Pdr0id, I agree with you. Before the left lane on American highways became the "Suicide Lane" in the '60s-'70s, people were always taught that the right lane was the place for all travelers to be - when they weren't needing to pass a slower moving vehicle, by using the left lane. The police, highway patrol and State Troopers don't even bother trying to enforce that law, anymore... (my late father was a State cop for 22 years... even he said that passing in the right lane was against the law [left lane for the UK]). Now, anyone behind the wheel has become their own sovereign nation. Turn signals? Nah. Following too closely? It happens all of the time, and you wonder why people keep getting rear-ended...
Ah, back to my post... Black Friday. Wasn't yesterday Black Thursday? When people were supposed to be home with their families, giving thanks for all of the good things in their lives? For those retailers to be open for business yesterday, this meant keeping people from being with their families for the Thanksgiving Holiday; which, profoundly saddens me. Here comes some US History (your favorite class in high school
) Our Thanksgiving Holiday was started by a Proclamation from President George Washington that finally became reality ("Thanksgiving To God") in 1789; then, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed that the last Thursday of November be celebrated as Thanksgiving (this took place not long after the Battle of Gettysburg); then, in 1941, Congress finally passed a law that made the last Thursday of November our national Thanksgiving Holiday.
Yesterday evening, I took a plate of our Italian Thanksgiving over to our neighbors... but, they weren't home - they went shopping (thank goodness they left Grandmother with the kids, or, I couldn't have given them the plate of food).
I was raised Roman Catholic; now, I'm more of a spiritualist type of person. Yet, I do believe in the traditions that our nation celebrates, and, that they should remain in place. While I support our nation's GDP, and the climb that continues since our "Great Depression II", we all need to remember that the traditions that have been passed down over the generations need to be honored, and that blatant materialism isn't necessarily a good thing. My rant. I'm done. I'm still full from yesterday's food... and, my snoring drove my better half nuts last night. My apologies to her. May your Black Friday be peaceful, uneventful, and serene. LW
