The key to any TV is a good color calibration if you care about picture quality.
Some of my friends own plasmas, despite my goading, are watching them how they came out of the box.
They insist that I tell them the truth and stop screwing with them on why my plasma looks better. I keep telling them it's just a good, properly adjusted LCD but they aren't having any.
Horse. Water. Drink.
(I have nothing against plasma - for all I know, they ended up making one that didn't audibly scream at my elevation. They hadn't the last time I bought a set, so I got an LCD. I might have gotten an LCD anyway though. If someone were making a decent DLP anymore I would have gotten that. Kiss plasma and LCD goodbye, a good DLP just nails it.)
Like a phone, don't use your TV right out of box. Adjust it. Watch with your eyes and not with your preconceived notions.
The number one thing in color TV is still color. You get far more information from that than you do dot resolution or anything else. And next comes contrast.
Specs are lies. Best example - if you were to instantaneously experience a 1:50,000 change in brightness, you would literally go blind.
The marketing departments have customers chasing their tails over what the tech is and what the numbers are.
None of that really matters - it's all about quality.
Glad to hear you had a great day. Send your better half a big happy birthday from your AF friends! Let her know we were all pulling for her when she was in the hospital and we are glad she made a full recovery! Thanks for the further information on Plasma, et al... my cousin owns (among other things) an A/V install operation, and, his guys obviously knew what to do to get the color quality just the way he wanted it to be. He still prefers his plasma over his LEDs, and, it's pretty easy to see why. At any rate, I just celebrated my fiancee's 50th birthday with her today. Not only did we get to have an excellent dinner, we got a lot of other things done today that makes life easier. It was a PRODUCTIVE day. Send my baby some birthday wishes, so that I can show her that she's known about in 'da Forums'. Thanks, everyone - LW
I'm a big fan of Samsung panels. What are your thoughts on the Samsung panel lottery? Are the Samsung panels really that much better than the Chinese ones? I've been thinking about getting one of these in the 50" size.

It looks like all of the 48" have Samsung panels, but the 50" have a good chance of being a non Samsung Chinese panel. I'm trying to decide if it's worth giving up 2" of screen size for peace of mind that I'm getting the real Samsung screen.
The other one I was considering is this Sony.

The price on that one fluctuates quite a bit, I'd have to wait for the price to come back down before it would be worth it to me. It's definitely not worth the price difference at the current prices.
Any thoughts?
I'm a big fan of Samsung panels.
The problem, as you say, is watching for Igsignia panels in that price range.
I'd like to mention Sharp but again in that range, it's more likely to be an Insignia.
What's LG offering in that area?
MikeDT, in my experience the missing bulb didn't snap any tapes. It would hit the end sure enough but hang long enough to eventually cancel the mode anyway. Of course that trick was used on a VHS top loader, not betamax. In my experience betamax ignores an error condition and continues post error anyway which resulted in more damage. VHS units had something that canceled a mode or turned the system off in the event of a malfunction.

LaserDisc flopped here at least. I saw the record-sized discs only a couple years, and then there was little selection on the format. I saw the last LaserDisc rentals in i think 1990.It's all academic and history for me now anyway, in fact the only time I've even seen a VHS or Beta in the last five years, is in a display cabinet in a museum. I don't think home VCRs really caught on in China, in the same way they did in the UK or US. Philips Video CD (not Laserdisc) was popular, and is still quite widely used, new Video CDs are made, and DVD is very popular. Blu-ray Disc on the other hand is practically non-existent, except for expensive grey imports.
I do have one Beta tape in storage in the UK, a copy of my sister's wedding video from 1985, and she's remarried twice since then.
