Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Thanks for the further information on Plasma, et al... my cousin owns (among other things) an A/V install operation, and, his guys obviously knew what to do to get the color quality just the way he wanted it to be. He still prefers his plasma over his LEDs, and, it's pretty easy to see why. At any rate, I just celebrated my fiancee's 50th birthday with her today. Not only did we get to have an excellent dinner, we got a lot of other things done today that makes life easier. It was a PRODUCTIVE day. Send my baby some birthday wishes, so that I can show her that she's known about in 'da Forums'. Thanks, everyone - LW

The key to any TV is a good color calibration if you care about picture quality.

Some of my friends own plasmas, despite my goading, are watching them how they came out of the box.

They insist that I tell them the truth and stop screwing with them on why my plasma looks better. I keep telling them it's just a good, properly adjusted LCD but they aren't having any.

Horse. Water. Drink.

(I have nothing against plasma - for all I know, they ended up making one that didn't audibly scream at my elevation. They hadn't the last time I bought a set, so I got an LCD. I might have gotten an LCD anyway though. If someone were making a decent DLP anymore I would have gotten that. Kiss plasma and LCD goodbye, a good DLP just nails it.)

Like a phone, don't use your TV right out of box. Adjust it. Watch with your eyes and not with your preconceived notions.

The number one thing in color TV is still color. You get far more information from that than you do dot resolution or anything else. And next comes contrast.

Specs are lies. Best example - if you were to instantaneously experience a 1:50,000 change in brightness, you would literally go blind.

The marketing departments have customers chasing their tails over what the tech is and what the numbers are.

None of that really matters - it's all about quality.

What are your thoughts on the Samsung panel lottery? Are the Samsung panels really that much better than the Chinese ones? I've been thinking about getting one of these in the 50" size.

It looks like all of the 48" have Samsung panels, but the 50" have a good chance of being a non Samsung Chinese panel. I'm trying to decide if it's worth giving up 2" of screen size for peace of mind that I'm getting the real Samsung screen.

The other one I was considering is this Sony.

http://www.rtings.com/reviews/tv/lcd-led/sony/w800b

The price on that one fluctuates quite a bit, I'd have to wait for the price to come back down before it would be worth it to me. It's definitely not worth the price difference at the current prices.

Any thoughts?

Glad to hear you had a great day. Send your better half a big happy birthday from your AF friends! Let her know we were all pulling for her when she was in the hospital and we are glad she made a full recovery! :)

MikeDT, in my experience the missing bulb didn't snap any tapes. It would hit the end sure enough but hang long enough to eventually cancel the mode anyway. Of course that trick was used on a VHS top loader, not betamax. In my experience betamax ignores an error condition and continues post error anyway which resulted in more damage. VHS units had something that canceled a mode or turned the system off in the event of a malfunction.

I'm a big fan of Samsung panels.

The problem, as you say, is watching for Igsignia panels in that price range.

I'd like to mention Sharp but again in that range, it's more likely to be an Insignia.

What's LG offering in that area?

Yeah... wasn't going to be able to patch this... I was planning on getting new tires soon, but I guess I'm getting them now.

If you scroll down to the questions on that review site, it has a chart of what panels supposedly come in which models. _If_ it is accurate, the 48" are all Samsung, but the 50" are either Samsung or AU Optronics. I could go to the store and look at the stickers on the box, but ordering online is easier and avoids sales tax.
I kind of eliminated LG because they use IPS panels. From what I've read those have wider viewing angles, but poor blacks and worse overall picture quality. Vizio has made strides, using full array backlighting and local dimming on all models this year, but I think they're still a year away from prime time.

It's all academic and history for me now anyway, in fact the only time I've even seen a VHS or Beta in the last five years, is in a display cabinet in a museum. I don't think home VCRs really caught on in China, in the same way they did in the UK or US. Philips Video CD (not Laserdisc) was popular, and is still quite widely used, new Video CDs are made, and DVD is very popular. Blu-ray Disc on the other hand is practically non-existent, except for expensive grey imports.

I do have one Beta tape in storage in the UK, a copy of my sister's wedding video from 1985, and she's remarried twice since then.

I would like to thank you, Gmash, for your post about my wife-to-be. It brought tears to my eyes, remembering all that she went through. She also told me to thank you, as well. Gratefully, she's back with me. She's making another Colorado trip in a few weeks, so, I'll be posting here regularly, hoping that last year's nightmare doesn't repeat itself. Someone has to take care of the dogs... that's me. Being alone during the Christmas Holidays really stinks, but, that's the way it is... huh, I wish you and your son all of the best, and that the nightmares take a break. As far as VHS and Beta is concerned, I had a friend who had ALL of the M*A*S*H shows recorded on a Beta machine, back in the '80s. I do remember the Laser Discs back in the early '80s... they were popular with some people that I knew, but, most used VHS VCRs. I had a dockable VHS video player/recorder, and camera back then. Many videos were made... then, thrown away before my marriage (that is no longer) :). For the record, there wasn't anything ribald on any of those tapes, but, videos with former girlfriends on them probably would've ended my marriage sooner ;). Young, and dumb, I most certainly was... now, we use a Dish Network DVR. Since it can only record films, there's no THOUGHT about going back down the 'young and dumb' road again, since monogamy reigns supreme in our household. Ah, maturity... thank goodness that it has finally occurred! May everyone's day be peaceful and serene - LW

LaserDisc flopped here at least. I saw the record-sized discs only a couple years, and then there was little selection on the format. I saw the last LaserDisc rentals in i think 1990.

Gosh, I haven't seen LaserDisc rentals since I-don't-know-when... however, there are still some places that still rent VHS (here in tobacco country, USA). That amazes me. Especially with Netflix and the other streaming video services available. My wife-to-be is getting ready to go to a meeting nearby, so, I may stop back in later. And, huh - like Gmash wrote - kids are resilient. I grew up in an Italian-American home, and, I had plenty of bugaboos... great uncles (and, my late Grandmother) that liked to scare my younger brother and I by just hiding around corners, and jumping out with a guttural noise to go along with it (!). I remember thinking that I saw something in my closet as a youngster, too... by the time I turned eight, those fears pretty much went away. My brother and I shared a bedroom until I was in fourth grade, so, I think that helped with the nighttime wimwams. You know, what gets watched on family television can contribute to nightmares, too. My kids were raised with The Lion King, and many old Disney movies that we either purchased or rented. They had their nights of scariness, too. It's like a rite of passage... those darned-old nightmares. Be assured that everything will work out just fine for your boy. I've got to spend a little time with my lady, so AHHHHHHHHHH...! I'm jumping off, now. We'll converse later, everyone. Be well - LW

"Ladies and Gentlemen, hobos and tramps; cross-legged beetles, and bowlegged ants; I stand before you, to stand behind you to tell you something I know nothing about. Admission is free - you pay at the door. Drag up a chair, and sit down on the floor..." (A preamble to a senseless double-entendre poem, from back in the days of Vaudeville).

I just went back a few pages, and hit a moderator's post about 'da rules'. I was getting ready to rant like I've never ranted before... but, after reading 'da rules' - I've had sudden change of mind. You see, I love these forums. I believe in following 'da rules'. These forums are loaded with information to help you Mod your Android phone, and find links to other developers that have even more stuff to make your phone be able to do things that your carrier, and, the phone manufacturer never intended. Yet -

I want to warn my fellow readers about the consequences of one's actions when it comes down to Mods. Not AF's moderators, phone mods - silly reader! You see, I've had a recent experience where I modded my phone, and ran into a thing called a soft-brick. I've had to send the phone back to to the manufacturer's repair station... of course, I made sure that my phone was without root before sending it off - but, some phones are quirky. Mine is. I've learned a valuable lesson:

Read everything about the mod that you want to do. Make sure that your phone fits the bill for the mod, and, also make sure that you know what you're doing. My phone worked fine - until I had to unroot it, for an OTA that kept pestering my screen for weeks. Even though I followed the written instructions, my phone still got soft-bricked - soft-bricked in such a way that there was no way for me to get the phone back to normal operation. My fiancee was thoroughly ticked at me, since we share the aforementioned phone. I've brought root to HTC phones, and Samsung phones. No problems there. Yet, the LG that I brought root to has been a constant PITA... so, when I get the phone back, I'm going to take pictures of it, along with one water-damaged phone, and a phone that I no longer need (it's boot-looped, and needs a battery - but, I'm no longer with the carrier of that phone, or, the other one). I'm going to see if I can make a trade for a phone that I can get to work with my carrier, and, be able to have the freedoms that I used to have in the past - with a rooted phone.

Ah. I feel better. I hope that this post helps any other Android phone users, and, I hope that my sharing with you gives you enlightenment, and the ability to be ever-watchful. Not everything you read will bring what you desire, unfortunately. Be careful. I love you guys - LW

Is it bad that I don't know what LaserDisc is? Did it come between VHS and DVD? I was born in 1990. Skipped from VHS to DVD around 2000-2001.

I think my parents still have one or two working VCRs and a whole closet full of VHS tapes. I'm slowly reacquiring DVDs, Blu-Rays, or digital copies of my favorite movies. Picked up Dumb and Dumber, Twister, Billy Madison, and Armageddon recently(only Armageddon on Blu-ray, the rest on DVD). I ordered all 6 Star Wars movies on Blu-Ray and DVD over the summer. Other movies I'm picking up cheap as digital copies.
