Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

@mikedt, @CrimsonToker, @Gmash, all concerned:

Yes - Elvis was marketed, in many ways, like Pat Boone (who also sung many songs that were written by African-American artists, in his early career). Even though Lieber & Stoller wrote much of his music after his debut in the 1950s, it was because of the movies he starred in - during the 1960s.

I remember his comeback TV special in 1968. I was six years old, and I thought that he was pretty cool. His later recordings - after 'Burning Love' - lost their luster, as did Elvis, due to his medicine management - which led to his early demise. My cousin, Belinda, was completely, an insanely ardent fan of Elvis Presley. She'd come back from concerts, sans panties - according to my late aunt.

For his time, he was part of the musical change from the Sinatra-type standards, to rock 'n roll. Other notable artists, like Chuck Berry (who was an African-American appealing to the American caucasian fair-to-light-skinned human beings) populace, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and many others - had borrowed the traditional 4/4 time signature rock beat from African-American Gospel music, which later became secular in form as 'R & B' (rhythm and blues).

And, rock and roll.

As far as the term Caucasian is concerned, I also fall under that category, being a descendant of Middle Europe (Italian). When I tan, however, the TSA people at airports Stateside look at me with added interest :). Add the goatee, and the Bin Ladenesque stereotype is brought to the fore, in a very sad way.

Elvis - was Elvis. He will still be remembered as the King Of Rock And Roll, and, it is what is. However, when I hear Maroon 5 doing their movie version of the song "Sunday Morning" (the movie in question, is "Something's Gotta Give", with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton in the leading roles) - I am moved to tears. It is funky, yet beautiful. Also, it is a song written in the key of C Major - the only people in music that got away with that key signature were Burt Bacharach, and The Beach Boys (yes, there are others - but, very few in number - like Wilson Pickett in the song "Mustang Sally").

Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Donny Hathaway, Kurt Cobain... gosh, there's a long list of artists that ended early in life. What a shame, for all of the musical listeners.

In traditional music, the key of C is known as the 'Natural' key (no sharps, and no flat notes in the diatonic scale).

All white keys, on the piano (note: Is there a racial correlation dating back to Classical Music origins? One must wonder.). Go back to my mention of Wilson Pickett, to dispel any racial epithet on my part - as I love all human beings.

That's why they call me LOveWerks. Don't be haters, everyone. Our national history is far from perfect, but - we are the 'melting pot' that continues onward.

Though, the previous posts shared in this thread echo the sentiment of many Americans. LW

Seems to me be that "ELVIS PRESLEY®" and "ELVIS®" are being marketed as much now as when he was alive..which was when I as at school, I'm 52 now.

Elvis Presley Inc. must be quite a lucrative business. Don't think Pat Boone, Buddy Holly, Jim Morrison, or Bing Crosby for that matter are still being marketed and commercialized on the same scale as Elvis Presley. In a way "Elvis Presley" has become a brand,

What I find somewhat interesting, Elvis is rather unknown here in China, whereas The Beatles, The Monkees and The Carpenters, almost everyone knows them, even most school students.

BTW for English teacher in the PRC and looking for a good warmer to get a class of new students going, just play Yesterday Once More, they'll all sing it. Play Love Me Tender or something, it will be a load of puzzled faces.

BTW why isn't Gary Glitter as popular as he used to be? .... joking!

@mikedt... Gary Glitter? I think that people in the entertainment business - whether film or music - that have that 'kind' of history, should be on a BBC-produced show 'on the tele' - hosted by Paul Reubens - (aka 'Pee Wee Herman'), titled:
Could You Handle Yourself In Public?

Where one of the first male guests on the show may remark: "You look just like my wife. My wife, in prison."

Elvis' brand is thriving, So is Jimi Hendrix's - hell, his concern makes money by merely attaching his name to any wah-wah pedal manufacturer (right now, I believe it is Dunlop), t-shirts, and any guitar-teaching software. Brian May, Queen's guitarist, has his own line of guitars - if I had the funds, I'd love to own one. Double truss-rods for an incredibly stable guitar neck, and paraffin-dipped pickups that squelch squealing feedback (except for the 'good kind', that enable notes to endlessly sustain from some of the most powerful single-coil electric guitar pickups in the industry), Along with an excellent tremolo system, and locking machine heads... well, maybe one day.

Wish me luck, @mikedt - this is colonoscopy week for me. As they say in America, "...this isn't my first rodeo..." but, if there's anything that could be ranted about - this definitely hits the Top 10...

My rant, for yesterday: man, was it hot outside. The air conditioner in the car only works in the 'defrost' setting. I'm still dehydrated. My wife-to-be, a Colorado native, was so exhausted. We, at least, came home - ate German Bologna sandwiches, and promptly crashed,

Now, I'm up - very early, to enjoy daybreak - but, in a few hours, the heat indices will be around 112 degrees Fahrenheit.

The grass needs to be cut. Damn it. LW

Yeh, a BBC show hosted by Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter, Stuart Hall, and the late Jimmy Saville, and any other entertainment celebs, dead or alive, arrested, tried, convicted, courtesy of Operation Yewtree. I remember in 2008 when Paul Gadd, aka G. Glitter, was released from a Vietnam jail and deported, the same week I was allowed into Hong Kong and he wasn't. In fact many countries stated they would refuse him entry.

@LOveWerks I do wish you very good luck with your medical things. and do hope you keep very well. :)

Wonder how Jimmy Hendrix Inc. licensed products started, was that when he was still alive, or something his estate did? Don't suppose you can get John Bonham or Keith Moon endorsed drum kits can you.

One of my coworkers feels sorry for the newer generations because, as he puts it-- "We grew up with the Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, Hendrix, Clapton... their influential groups? Britney Spears, Luke Perry, Eminem."

We also grew up with The Archies, Partridge Family, Bay City Rollers, Jonathan King and Little Jimmy Osmond. [emoji14]

Their influencial groups, maybe Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, etc. I'm sure Eminem will go down in history as being influential, maybe Prodigy as well. :)

When people needlessly use the word "obviously".
Example:
"Hey do you know what this is/is for?"
"It's obviously... blah-blah-blah."

No, it wasn't obvious, you dolt, or I wouldn't have asked . I can't decide if these people like trying to make other people feel dumb, or if they really don't realize how they're coming across.

----------------------------------------
I was in a big company meeting today, one of our chemistry guys was talking about some stuff they're working on & was talking to us like we all understand his chemistry-geek-speak. After going through a few slides he mentioned a new thing they're working on that (apparently) related back to an earlier slide, & when he said "remember that blah-blah-blah (something from a previous slide)" - I cringed & wanted to yell out "no, I don't remember, I don't understand most of what you're saying, anyway o_O

Obviously that is annoying. I don't know why you would call up something so obviously gear grinding in such an obvious place.

My sister. She grinds my gears. I'm sooo mad right now.

Long story semi-short, she got her a kids a gecko last year because she can't say no to them. I told her not to because I didn't have room for another, knowing it was coming here eventually. The kids tired of it and so did she but she made some effort to care for it, or so I thought. She called me a few weeks ago and asked me to take it (shocker!) because it wasn't eating. They do do that sometimes so I wasn't worried but told her to give it time. She told me on Friday it still wasn't eating and to take her, she didn't want it anymore and the not eating was upsetting for her. Fine. I found a little stand to use for the tank at a garage sale, got it all cleaned up over the weekend and went to pick my new gecko up tonight. The freaking heating unit was unplugged and has been for who knows how long. Umm. Reptiles don't eat if they are not warm enough. SOB!! So, little Frozen (seriously, that's what they named her, how ironic) is here and getting warm. SOB! Oh, I am soooo mad. :@

I did not want another gecko. I really don't have room for her. I will give her a good life and she will be, finally, well cared for. I will never let my sister hear the end of this. Some people just need to be slapped upside the head with a 2 x 4 but, alas, that's illegal. Welcome home Frozen.

Well, consider it + points in your karma bank.

I agree with this! In this case, I'm an old soul. I'm 29, born in '86. But my parents both listened to blues and classic rock constantly, and I learned to love and appreciate it myself. Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan. I learned about music's roots, where it came from and what influenced it. I personally don't like much of the music of my generation. It seems lazy to me, with so few still playing instruments and writing their own lyrics. It's all corporate or indie, for the most part. Conform, or good luck getting your music recorded and distributed.

I could be totally wrong, but that's my view. /rant

:)

How did we get to Luke Perry, yeh Beverly Hills 90210, he's never done any songs. Might as well discus the singing career of Matt LeBlanc as well. He's not had much of a singing career either. Yeh, Matt LeBlanc from Friends. And FWIW they found that John Travolta couldn't sing either, and he sang and starred in a very successful musical.

Although Leonard Nimoy could sing reasonably IMO, but he never really made a career of it. William Shatner...No!

Maroon 5 and Coldplay I like - a lot! Eminem, Britney Spears, and plethora rap and hip hop artists also hit my 'me no like list' - like Diane Keaton said in the movie "Something's Gotta Give", "...how may words rhyme with 'bitch'?"

They call it poetry. I call it divisive, misogynist pap. Yet, younger generations have that as their 'voice', for their generation. So, whether I like it or not - is a non-issue. The younger generations have the right to listen to that kind of music, and enjoy it. Wow. Writing that didn't hurt as much as I thought it would... :)

I'm also a fan of the older stuff, like Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima and Keely Smith, Tony Bennett, et al - as I grew up with it playing in the house, as a kid.

@mikedt - I'm having difficulty in dealing with a Hong Kong-based concern called Fast Tech. They sell authentic and knock-off products very cheap. Yet, even though I sent back an item to their USA address in Florida (Next Day Air, I might add) - they are still going to try and ship the Euro version of what I want. If you have any advice in how to respond in Chinese, I'm all eyes. :)

When people say "going up (somewhere down country), or down (somewhere up country)...but what annoys me even more is that it annoys me and I correct them, I hate that quality in myself

Is that their version of a census?

I spent a couple years in the Philippines and ended up being included in their census in 2010. Was definitely a statistical outlier in the neighborhood.

Yep, it's a census and more, but this one is not run every ten years or whatever, it's always maintained, the Hukou.
I'll let the wiki explain the rest....been around for 2000 years apparently.
