Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I have 7Pro 64 bit. Have not seen any BSOD unless cat sat on keyboard.

I also don't use much of anything that is included in the OS. I do my damndest to get rid of IE. If I need a movie editor, I'll buy one or use Linux. Same for office suite. Libre Office is pretty good. I also won't use Bing. If I can turn off the extras, I do.

I just feel the OS is there to run what I choose, not what it thinks I want.

I have the last no cloud Adobe apps. Run just fine. In fact, they run just fine on an offline XP box.

I also don't use MS security. I've used NOD32 for years, and the same for Online Armor. I don't let Windows call home.

None of my computers are off the shelf. One started off as a 286, and has been updated, upgraded ever since. I'd go to a computer shop with the latest Photoshop and tell him to put a computer together for those specs and a little more. I get what I want. If a patch is serious, I have the tech do it.

The laptops are refurbs. I have an HP right now, but after it was rejuvenated, just Windows7 was on it. Not any of the usual extra junk. I had the tech put 7 Pro on.

I do understand your frustration. I've seen it with ME and Vista on friends computers.

zuben, that's why I was such a Mac fanatic for years. Pick and run what you what you want, not what the software developer/chipset manufacturer wants you to run. The i7 is a good processor. I only hope that the information that I found for bjacks12 helped. Even after all of these years - and I go back before System 7 with Mac - I'm not a Microsoft supporter.

Even on the Toshiba we use, the docs all end up on the desktop, in a folder labeled 'Docs'. Pictures, same thing. I don't have time to go through slideshows of all of my photos, and, once again, Microsoft - why develop Windows 8/8.1 (my antivirus software refers to my updated version of 8.1 as "8.2") as a peanut butter OS with all of the same glitches, restrictions, and 'Big Brother' tracking control that covers all Windows-running products, including tablets, smartphones, and inexpensive laptops like ours that doesn't even support touch screen?

I know that Macs gobble RAM, but, for musicians like myself, I need to save my money - and get a MacBook Pro with LOTS of RAM, and at least half a terabyte of HD. No audio latency with a Mac, and, no MIDI latency, either.

Some of the partners here at work have bought Surface tablets and are really enjoying 8.1.....I hope this doesn't mean they are going to pressure IT to roll out 8 to our machines. I'm happy with 7 if I have to use Windows.

bjacks12, the design of
Windows 8/8.1 seems
geared toward
touchscreen-type UIs,
like tablets, and
smartphones... what I
fail to understand is
why they introduced
the OS in the first place,
when most of the
inexpensive desk and
laptop Windows-based
computers sold - even
now - do not have
touchscreen
integration.

I've tested the developer beta of Windows 10, and though it is glitchy and balky as most betas are, it is an improvement - and, it SUPPOSEDLY will be a free upgrade next month.

The most irritating part of Windows 8/8.1 - at least, for me - is when I try to use the old, familiar Windows Update from Classic Shell's Start screen - it doesn't work. The updates usually come on Tuesdays, and, when Classic Shell's Start screen interface changes the shut down selections to 'shut down after update,' or 'restart and update' - you know that you're in for some waiting time. Classic Shell, at least, gives you a heads-up. Are you using that program, bjacks12, or are you still using Windows 7, like zuben? LW

mikedt - fireworks can be so much fun, but one of your pixs looked like the aftermath of people being blown up... I certainly hope that wasn't the case. The SE USA is bracing for snow & sleet... I'm not too thrilled about it, because there isn't much snow removal equipment around here... LW

This thread idea is not new, but a great thing to have around!

Need to blow off some steam? Have at it!

I'll start.

I'm sick and tired of the way my employer, "The State" handles promotions, pay, and extras, etc (for example, the window cube that opens up).

Nevermind how hard you work, or how much work you do while you're peers sit around and do nothing. Nevermind how well you know your job. Nevermind the initiative you take or the fact that you actually care about your users.

All that matters is "time in service".

It's so depressing and kills any motivation to try to do as well as you know you should and could. Because while you're kickin' butt, the guy next to you who does nothing (and knows NOTHING about his job), gets the promotion because he "qualifies" - since he's been around for years. Of course, he still comes to you for help with everything he DOES get assigned to do. But, he doesn't share that fat paycheck.

...and that, ladies and gentlemen, is what grinds my gears.

Sorry to hear that, BUT when you work for a government entity, that's how things go. You will also find that there is a significant amount of nepotism. The joke goes... what do you call the moisture between two state workers making love? "Relative humidity". LOL (sorry I just had to)

I agree, feel sorry for you. I was in Miss. once on a business trip. We were actually stuck in our hotel rooms for a couple of days because we got about a foot of snow. No one had a snow shovel, and you couldn't buy one. What a mess......

It's 6:15 AM, EST in the US of A... time for me to be a shameless huckster:
Hopefully, this will be a link to me & my lady's YouTube page, that features one studio subscription, and the rest of the video uploads are of me - playing and singing for all who care to watch and listen, and this is my attempt at getting more of my acquaintances here at 'da Forums' to become dedicated subscribers to our (my lady's and mine) small, but growing YouTube channel...

Most of the little bits, is remains of firecrackers, the type you roll out in a big long strip. I think on the whole it's pretty safe considering the size and how powerful some of these fireworks are, especially the mortar air-burst ones. Compared the UK, it's one thing I've certainly noticed about China, people respect fireworks here, and there's no juveniles throwing the things around in the street. That's main reason why the UK got the Fireworks Act, 2003, which basically meant no more loud bangs, firecrackers or mortars, unless they're used by licensed professionals.

Our weather has become rather spring like in the last few days, all the snow has gone.

In North Carolina, they actually spray the main arteries (interstate highways, and main roads) with a liquid chemical/salt mixture in advance of the impending snow; then, they clean out the bread and milk at ALL the supermarkets, and everything literally SHUTS DOWN.

I grew up in the Northeast, where life, work, school (most of the time) and public transit keep on trucking during blizzards. My wife-to-be is from the Rockies, so we'll be among the few driving around. The only things that worry us are inexperienced snow drivers, and, most of all: the loss of electricity. May Duke Energy be ready, should the forecast get hairy (they're calling for 6-8" west of Raleigh), and, since we live in an extremely rural area, today will be a jaunt for supplies, topping off gas, and cooking my huge amount of pasta, marinara & meatballs to cover leftovers. Sheesh.

We can still get the two and three mortar fireworks just over the South Carolina state border; however, like Great Britain, that'll probably change here soon, because the PlayStation Generation and the Millennials, raised on a regular diet of XBox and Call Of Duty think that when things go BOOM up close, it won't cause injuries. It'll be like up North: Boom-Boom Zambelli presents the Fourth of July... gosh, I sound just like my elders sounded years ago. I'll be 53 in June, so, I guess it's time... though, we'll lose yet another freedom in the process... LW

You should try New Years in the Philippines some time.

It's awesome. Sounds like you're in Fallujah. Everybody's blowing up fireworks, some bought, some homemade. Old people, young people, drunks, children. Hours upon hours.

Leading up to New Years, the gov't health department puts out PSAs full of NSFL pictures of firework injuries too.

Several really good Covers there! [emoji106] [emoji2]

You sound really good! [emoji106]

There are two tunes that are mine in the uploads, the instrumental "Thompsonville" and the song "Mary Eyes", written for my fiancée and manager. All of the rhythm section on the ones with backing music are done by me; keyboards, drums, bass - that's your Lovin' One, in real time (recorded, of course). Of course, I'm singing live.

If you would all be so kind, share the link with as many people as you can, as Elizabeth (Mary) and I are slowly trying to build a fan base.

The YouTube channel isn't monetized, but, if anyone here wants a song written for them, or for someone in your life that affects your life in a special way - send me a conversation that covers everything that this person has done, or share a storyline - and, tell me how you want the music done - rock, jazz/rock, acoustic, pop, oldies, metal - just let
me know, and I'll do my best. Even ringtones, as I can convert from .wav or .aiff to a high-bandwidth mp3, from my recordings.

My immediate desire is to raise enough money to get a MacBook Pro to run ProTools, as I'm having a dreadful time running PreSonus in a latency-ridden Toshiba C875 64-bit laptop.

The stuff you're hearing were two-track recordings bounced and remixed to mp3.

Thank you for your kind words, and encouragement. I used to have lots of gear. Now, I'm starting over.

bjacks12 -

When we were kids between the 60s and the 70s, AM Rock radio ruled supreme. Even though the radio format covered everything from straight-ahead rock to soul, funk, R&B - those were cool times, as it brought people together.

Yet, even then - when a certain song was going up the charts with a bullet, it got overplayed.

Just like the Uptown Funk tune you mentioned. However, if you need a break, look in the previous posts and you'll find a YouTube link - that's me.

I hope you'll give our YouTube page a visit; maybe, you'll even become a subscriber.

No 'Uptown Funk' there.

bjacks, have a great remainder of your day in Lost Wages :) LW
