Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Coffee Talk with Linda Richman - who remembers this gem? Comedy just isn't the same as it was even 20 years ago. It's all about shock value and insult humor, instead of actual wit or even silly play on words. Ahhh Tina fey... You used to write so well, before the corporations took over lol

I completely agree!

I miss George Carlin.
I saw him do a show in 1999-2000 (?) with my cousin, in Portsmouth, VA. Someone in the audience kept heckling him, repeating things he said like a sick, twisted echo - and, George - he got mad as hell. He said something like, "Hey. You! This is my show. If you don't shut the f*** up, I'm going to find you later - and kick your @$$!"

I loved his old stuff. The Hippie-Dippee Weatherman... "Hey, man, what's happenin'? Que pasa. Whaddya mean 'pasa'? Up here, we have a Canadian Low - not to be confused with a 'Mexican High'... tomorrow's low will be around 30 degrees; tomorrow's high - well, whenever I wake up, man..."

Of course, there was the famous-in-the-seventies "Seven Words You Cannot Say On Television." Any Carlin fan knows those... and, as time went along, he added more words to the list.

He was an American icon, and, yes - I miss him too. LW

@mikedt - we've got an item being shipped from FastTech, finally... but, they're trying to cancel our last order, because we didn't send them a picture of the credit card. I sent it - wow, so much for privacy - and, we'll see what happens. Hopefully, they will keep the picture in-house. They advised me not to send a picture of the back end of the card, because of the CCV number, or whatever the hell it is.

Man, oh man - LW

For card not present transactions, e.g. on-line, it sounds like they're being extras cautious about authorizing credit card payments, I guess they want to see a picture of the card, to see if it's actually in your possession and has your name on it, etc. Otherwise they only have a number and expiry date, which could be someone else's, or from a data breach or something. If they subsequently find the payment was fraudulent, and was charged-back or reversed and they've already shipped the item, they've lost out. The CCV is an extra security measure for card not present payments.

I can certainly "test" your credit card for you LW.

Just enter number, expiry date and CCV in the space below...OK?

Microsoft grinds my gears!

Windows 10 just downloaded to my computer, and now I am getting the message that my copy of Windows 10 will not activate because the License Key has been Blocked by the Microsoft servers.

What the Heck?

The version of Windows 7 that I had on my DELL Laptop came factory installed and was valid so WTH?

Now, you've got me nervous, @mikedt ... doesn't anyone get that our privacy is disappearing? We contacted the bank, and they were the first to decline the purchase, since it was out of the United States... but, we called them, and the purchase went through. The purchase showed upon FastTech's order screen, approved! Then, they said that the .2 ohm coils wouldn't ship until the 13th. We bitched. As soon as that happened, that's when the smokescreen started. We sent them a picture, but, they were the ones to inform us "...do not send picture of back of card... your CCV it is for your security..." (their words, in the English they can type - and I intend no offense, because I would be even worse trying to respond in Chinese).

They want everyone to go through PayPal, which is no longer affiliated with eBay. They say it's free, but, it is not. Once again, yet another corporate entity knowing my purchasing habits (and, charging a fee for each transaction). In the interest of protecting corporations... which, in the United States, have more rights than individuals do.

This is bull****. To top things off, here's the kicker:

Early this morning, we received an email message that they wanted ANOTHER picture of the card, as their "...bank had authorized our past purchases...".

Yes, they want our business. Yet, they did away with their USA support 800 number. Look, everyone - I know that there are plethora fraudsters out there in the world. However, when you have a business relationship with someone - even online - they have to at least show some honor, decency and integrity to their customers.

Especially ones with a perfect purchasing history. Enough written. LW

I don't know if anyone has answered your post, @kct1975 - but, from what I understand, people who had Windows 8/8.1 could get the free Windows 10, since the UI in Winblows 8/8.1 truly, in a word, sucked... you had to install Classic Shell to get your native Windows desktop and Start screen, and, you know that the developer for that program was getting all kinds of scripts in, and learning about your 'surfing' habits, your online purchase locations, and anything social that you might be into... so much for the last bastion of freedom that we all believed the Internet and World Wide Web was going to be.

Windows 7 was, IMHO, great (for Windows... I'm a Mac lover, myself). Microflop knew this, and that's probably why your license key was blocked.

I'm running Windows 10 64-bit, thanks to some ideas I received from @bjacks12, @Unforgiven, @Gmash and others. Go back a few pages, and find @bjacks12 's post with the links to Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, I think it's called. He had the links for both 32 and 64-bit installs. Then, go to Microsoft and try again to install Windows 10. Good luck. LW

7 gets the free upgrade as well. There's an issue that needs to be brought up with Microsoft perhaps. I know a guy on another forum who ended up needing a new key, but that's because he had made significant hardware changes to the machine he was using to the point where it no longer matched the details tied to his original key.

Why am I living in a ever growing, over populated, over priced city working my butt off when I could be in the interior of the province with fresh air, a lot less people, lower housing cost, etc...
