RC9 Update recieved 3am this morning in the UK

things I've noticed:

Sim Tool-kit (nothing special there, at least not with my phone company)

Check for system updates (under "About phone")

Firmware version 1.1 (obviously)

Instead of cutting the names of the shortcuts on the desktop with "...", the last characters now fade out

Join latitude (in maps) .. if you don't find it there, go to google.com/latitude and access it from there (it keeps guessing I'm in India or Faroe Islands, where #2 is the right answer, but this has been ongoing since I got my phone)

Maps for my home country have been updated/added


and that's it for now.. will return if I find something new and improved..

Hmm ok that I don't mind so much if it's browser based and works properly but does seem strange that for some regions it hasn't been added to the actual google maps application. The ironic thing is I can use the latest version with latitude on my Nokia N82 and old HP Ipaq 514 and not my G1 with GOOGLE as it likes to announce on the back of the phone

Does it still envoke the GPS on the phone or is it purely network data driven to base you location on?
 
Just received an email from someone and they mentioned about the sim toolkit and what is inside it?

Sounds very much like the kind of thing you get on PAYG phones when you have a menu option for SIM stuff that leads to balance updates, sports, news etc etc

as well as my T Mobile Contract I have an O2 sim in one phone and a Vodafone one in another and they are both PAYG and have these types of SIM options which you don't find normally on contract handsets.

I could be digging in the wrong direction but it may be pointing towards the networks asking for this as they may be leaning towards selling android handsets on PAYG as well as contract now

it doesn't look like it's touching the GPS.. but as a result the position is not as accurate.. it draws a large circle of about 500 m radius.. and I'm located in that circle, but not close to the center of it.. more 200-300 meters off I'd say..

and it's not browser driven either.. uses Maps..
 
I've recently also had this update, and like others in this thread I have most of the new features slated for this but even though I now have google maps v3.0 I don't have an option for latitude. Equally, I cannot access it through the site since it simply launches maps.

Any ideas on why or when this will be resolved?

In my SIM tools I found:

Nummarkall (if you want to look up any phone number)
Saldo (check your current bill for the month)
Stuttlig sms (translated to Funny Text messages, if you are bored and want to read something funny :P)
Vedrid (translated to Weather, to check the forecast)

If I use my SIM card in any other phone this can also be found.. so it's basically features included on the SIM card..

When you press the big "Launch Now" button, you are directed to Maps, and if you hit the Menu button, you can click Join Latitude, and accept the terms and conditions, and then you should be able to use it..

You can check Maps first, and see if the "Join Latitude" isn't already there..

Yup I understand that and what I would expect to see as it's network related and these are the types of things that we tend to find in the UK when a PAYG sim is put into a phone from my experience, If I then swap the sim for a contract one then the sim features dissapear. Thats why I am thinking that it may be getting ready for PAYG.

Not a fact just an assumption.

Thats the issue, there is no "Join Latitude" option, or anything even remotely relating to it. I have all the standard options such as Search, Directions, Map Mode, My Location, Clear Map and More (Giving History, Zoom, Terms & Privacy and About) but no other options. I guess this isn't what you see?

no, actually in my situation, there was a button in the center called Join Latitude..

but one thing that I've missed so far is the "speak to search" feature.. I have an app called Quick Search that should support this, but when I push the button, it says that I am missing something.. :/
 
I've had the sim toolkit thingy since I got the phone a couple of weeks ago on RC4, it's stuff that's programmed into the sim card, in my case it's certain sms and mms services to get info about news, weather traffic and so on. It's the same for other phones.
 
Somebody out there must know why the uk is missing

and we're still missing:
IM services other than google
Amazon MP3 market

and status is unknown for:
improved radio handling for better battery life?
Is it google or is it tmobile uk???
It's about time somebody owned up and explain WHY?:o:o:o
just a straight answer surely it's not too much to ask ,to tell people who have committed themselves to the g1 , why you are not getting all the services available

I believe Google are working on the updates...
T-Mobile distribute them....

As for voice searching....it's to do with accents....not language...

As for latitude...I dont know...

I guess that would be T-Mobile UK....
Unless there's a way to contact Google's Development Team
 
And you think they aint reading already :D It's well known that all the networks and manufacturers keep an eye on Blogs and Forums, this has led to some of them setting up their own.

Vodafone (In the UK at least but may do it in other regions) had the FIT (Forum Intervention Teams) and they would register on mobile phone forums and officially announce themselves and try and respond/help people who were commenting, this then led them to set up their own forum whereby they could respond also.

Google/Android/T-Mobile are probably more than aware of all the comments but it would be nice if there was some way to officially feedback and get a response.

I'm sure they are....
That's why I haven't bothered taking action...

For all we know...they could be reading and making us wait longer to spite our ignorant attitudes...
 
If anyone from google or t-mobile is reading this can you explain why?
Just an observation but usually when l get an update for firmware/software or even a market app, there is usually a statement or note advising of the updates and why. You don't have to guess!!!!!
 
if anyone is experiencing troubles updating, here is what I did:

-downloaded the update file, which you can find a link to earlier in this thread

-placed the file on the SD card and renamed it "update"

-placed "device info" on the desktop of the phone (using AnyCut)

-let the "device info" look for updates

-it installed everything itself

-voila! should be up and running after some time


N.B. be patient while updating, because it takes some time.. have a cup of coffee if you get too anxious
