Root Recoveries (Clockwork & Amon)

MusicJunkie

I've been looking around and I see mixed views on these two recoveries. I have been using Clockwork Mod since I rooted my phone and I updated to the latest version a little while ago. I haven't had any problems with the recovery, but I've seen people have and they suggest switching to Amon.

1) what's the difference between the two (latest versions)?
2) how would I go about switching to Amon if I really wanted to?
3) will my Clockwork nandroid backups work with Amon or do I have to make an entirely new one?
4) some thread said something about Clockwork working better with Sense ROMs (currently using MikG 2.59 - it works the best for my phone, even better than the newest releases) than it does ASOP. I switch between MikG and CM7 sometimes and haven't had a problem with the recovery.

Those are just a few questions and concerns I had about the recoveries and there area SO many posts it's really hard to search through and get a definite and specific answer I need. Thanks!

CWM for one is harder to navigate for new people. It has some critical things tucked away in other menus that tend to get missed. Also, its buggy\ier and doesnt always get everything wiped. Finally, it only supports one type of scripting, while amon ra supports both types, It allows you to use files like superwipe to help with the wiping process.

All around.... its just better. You should switch. Its very simple to do

How do I switch?

From an earlier post today:

Download this. It is Amon Ra recovery.

You will need to download that and change the name of it to exactly PC36IMG. Place it on your SD card and then pull the battery, put it back in, and do the power+volume down to get into bootloader. It will find the file you just put on there and ask you to update. Hit yes

Thank you. I'm about switch to this recovery now. Another quick question. I'm told that Amon RA backs up the Wimax keys? I downloaded an app that told me I still had mine so I know for sure Clockwork Mod's latest version was backing them up too

which one did you give him, Rx? the new one that uses the capacitive buttons and can restore both amon and cw nands?

I have another question, how would I switch back to Clockwork Mod, lets just say for kicks and giggles? lol

I don't know, actually, I never have... :(

have to see it, don't know if it is the same as getting amon or if you flash a zip or what...

You should be able to find it over on XDA if you decide you need to go back

I gave him the normal one. Dust is correct that there is a version of amon ra that can restore both CWM and amon Ra style recoveries. That may be worth checking out for you. The reason I didnt link it is because its a little more work as the OP didnt actually put the updated file available for download in zipable form, so you have to zip it up yourself.

Okay. Thank you again. I think this version is fine for me. I notice that the Amon RA nandroids are a lot smaller than the Clockwork Mod nandroids. It took a little longer to back up but I don't care as long as it can back up everything I need before flashing and not lose my Wimax keys, lol.

There is a flashable one, I can find the copy of it for you if you want. brb
Edit: Ok, here you go!

Andygu fixed me up with it.

I think it ought to be in the rooting sticky now, up to date and all, you know?

you could stick it in your evo troubleshooting guide too!

Easy now folks, I still CWM! JK, lol :D

I just never got around to switching, will someday......

I'll recommend Amon-Ra to everyone I help, it really does do a better job.

I had no clue about the Wimax keys or the backing them up until I started looking into the Amon RA recovery. I'm glad I found out and I'm glad I still have my keys and was able to nandroid back them up!

just an fyi on the amon ra recovery style recovery you can use the recovery image that is in the op. all you need is the [UTILITY] Android Flasher. it will flash the img file for you. pretty handy program in IMO.

and i will look into adding the new recovery into the guide and might add this and the zip file into the rom/kernel thread.
