Release date ? (BBY Xoom page active as of 2/20)

Not sure if anyone noticed this yet but the date on the xoom pictured on verzions page says Feb. 28th, Just wondering if that is a hint considering if it were really powered up it would say the date the pic was taken..:D

Wow, I never would have noticed that. I think you are definitely on to something, Sanjay Jha specifically said February at CES so this wouldn't surprise me. This is particularly exciting for me because I'll be eligible for an upgrade starting Feb 28 since I got my Incredible on a one year contract, and I'm debating getting an iPhone 4 on a one year contract and selling it for some quick cash and getting a Xoom instead of upgrading my phone. I wouldn't mind sticking with my Incredible for another 10 months and waiting until December to upgrade when the real killer android phones come out.

Edit: Here's a higher res version of the same photo that's on Verizon's site...

I don't think they do anything by accident, but I would be surprised if they launched on a Monday, especially if they did a midnight launch.

I would agree, more likely a pre-order date than a go to the store and get it date. When I got my Incredible, pre-orders started at 12:01 a.m. Monday morning. I ordered mine by 12:06 a.m. If they do that then expect them to be delivered a day or two early to pre-order folks before they hit the main stores.

If that's the case, I know what I'll be doing early Feb 28th morning...

Honestly, I'm thinking pre-orders will start shortly after Mobile World Congress (2/14-2/17). It wouldn't surprise me if pre-orders started 2/18, with expected ship date of 2/28.

Just a guess though.

...they will "leak" a decent piece of information every week or so from now until launch. They can't let the excitement die down, so doing this would keep it at the top of everyone's minds.

Be nice, but not seeing how Honeycomb will be ready then. Just look how long it took Moto to get a stable 2.1 and 2.2 out and those were out months before Moto even updated.

I sense a delay to end of March.

Agreed, but that was because Moto was busy adding Blur to this. With most Android releases, Google finishes the OS and then Moto has to make it work on their platform.

Since this is Google's test hardware, I doubt Moto has much to do with it at this point -- Google is working on it, refining it, etc. When Google is done, it'll be ready to ship with no Moto tweaking necessary.

Well, we don't really know how far along Honeycomb is, but it's always been rumored that Google will have it ready for Mobile World Congress (2/14-2/17). During his interview with Engadget, Matias Duarte didn't put up any fight about a possible February launch.

Also consider that the Eclair (2.0) SDK wasn't released until 10/26/09, and the Moto Droid (running 2.0) was released only 10 days later.

The day the Xoom releases,
I will definitely be showing up to Verizon early before they open.
I can honestly say that I am equally excited, quite possibly more excited over the Xoom, than I was for the X.
I'm past ready to stop lugging my laptop around.

i would be more geeked if i could put programs like pokerstars on it..

That would be sick!
I imagine it will only be a matter of time, since Android does nothing but grow bigger and better.
300,000+ activations per day would catch my attention as a dev in a heartbeat!

Honestly, waiting for the next 24 days is going to suck. Then again, it's better than waiting for 65 days, which would technically be the end of 1st quarter.

Just hope the 2/17 date is accurate.

Me too. Cautiously optimistic though because 2/17 seems like a viable date in that VZW usually launches products on Thursdays, and also this would be the last day of MWC and would allow Google to show off the final product to the world just prior to the launch. Still just a rumor at this point of course ..

It seems that rumored 2/17 date is much less certain recently after the Motorola earnings call the other day.

Jha apparently first mentioned the "End of" February, and then later in a Q & A session apparently mentioned that the release could slip to March. I guess we won't know anything until an official announcement of course, but many sites are reporting this latest date rumor, 1 being here.

$799.00, potential delays, huge hurdles to overcome in a marketplace changing daily.

I don't know ... I wouldn't call it a "delay" really at this point. The only official mention of a release date from either Moto or VZ was "first quarter". I know Jha at CES may have mentioned "February" off hand, but again no official specific date was ever pointed to. All indications seem to be that it will be released in the "first quarter". Some screen shot leak of a Best Buy inventory system had 2/17, which spread like wild fire, but no one actually announced that date, so I don't think anything can be considered delayed legitimately. This is quite a change for Android and I would expect them to have to tweak it as time goes by here. Hopefully it will be ready sooner rather than later ..

As far as the changing marketplace, to me there is only 1 "real" tablet to compete with - the iPad - and soon iPad 2. Since the iPad came out, IMO the only change in this space has been the addition of many many sub-par tablets. I don't think the space has changed much at all, just grown crowded with crap(maybe except for the Tab). But it's actually this device, the XOOM, that will start to change the tablet market I believe, as it will be the first Honeycomb Android true tablet experience.

As for the $799, hard to argue that point, but there are other threads for that topic :)
