Root Rename OK but can you move Nandroid Backups??

scudder

Android Expert
Hi...

Bunch of threads out there indicating that it is SAFE to rename nandroid backups (no spaces or special characters, etc.) but can you move the file to wherever you want?? It seems that you can flash the restore file from anywhere but in Amon Ra you don't manually navigate to a folder of your choosing to find the backup. When you go to the "Restore" menu, Amon Ra
goes right to the location of the backups (the "nandroid" folder on your sd card).

Not that I would want to need to move them but was just wondering....

THANKS!!

Your gonna want to leave your backups in clockworkmod->backups. Renaming in Rom Manager is ok, but renaming the actual backup file after its made, from a file browser, is not a good idea. IMO

Interesting....because before I posted this question my thread title was "Can I Rename my Nandroid Backup?" and before posted there were a bunch of links that came up addressing that question. EVERY LINK that I looked at said there was NO PROBLEM renaming the files...did not read ONE problem with renaming as long as you one didn't rename with special characters or spaces.

Was wondering what your experience was with renaming and what problem you ran into?? Also read nothing about needing to rename in ROM Manager. Did you have specific problems or just erring on the sideof caution??

So since the rename question seemed safe, I rephrased my question to address location of the files.

AND I just realized...you're referring to clockwordmod

You can move them to store them but to use the nandroid it has to be in the proper folders. Renaming is fine as u said in the op just no strange $%# in the name.

yeah renaming is ok especially with amon ra, not really sure with clockwork mod. and i would not recommend using rom manager for anything really.

but like it has been said do not use and weird symbols or spaces.

moving them is a different issue. both recoveries looks to a specific folder for the nandroid backups and if they are not in that folder then you will not be able to restore it. so leave it in the nandroid folder for amon ra.

+1 for having nothing to do with ROM Manager. Its a buggy program and I don't use it.

Moving nandroids can be done however for the restore purpose they will need to be where your recovery expects them. I have renamed several of my nands and never had an issue.

Having a Nandroid is important but just as important is keeping a good ROM on the phone that way if there are issues you can flash the rom and have a working phone in no time.

I also recommend not having more than 3 Nandroids on a card at one time. Nandroids become outdated really quick especially if programs are updating all the time.

One more thing you should run a backup before Nandroiding as the Nandroid will take you back to a moment in time and if you received any text or voicemails you may want to have a backup of those.

One last question I'll post here just because I'm here already and, I apologize, long week, it's late, I didn't search for the answer in the forums and I have to go night-night :D

I'm asking these nandroid location and rename questions because I'm dealing with some issues with the latest version of MikG 3.1 upgrading from 2.56.

If I have a nand of MikG 3.1 and also one of 2.56, I presume that if I want to "downgrade" from MikG 3.1 to 2.56 that I FIRST need to flash the 2.56 version and THEN restore the 2.56 nandroid, correct? My presumption is based upon my understanding that 3.XX is a totally different "architecture" than 2.56 and, if Amon Ra didn't stop me and give an error off the bat, I could probably reeeeally screw up something if I tried to restore a 2.XX on a current install of 3.XX, right??

Thanks guys!!

I believe all you have to do is wipe before doing a restore. That all I ever do, even if I'm on a sense Rom and restoring cm7 or any other rom

Yep just wipe and restore because you will be replacing the rom you are on with the one from the backup.

well technically you do not need to wipe at all before restoring a nandroid backup. everything gets formatted as it the nandroid backup is installed anyways. however, it does not hurt to wipe. and since nandroid backups are a complete snapshot of your phone you can just restore anything without having to flash anything. for example i just flashed lgux which is an aosp rom and now i just nandroid back to mikg3.1 and i do not wipe or flash anything. and i have had no issues. but it might be a good idea to wipe before restoring from an aosp roms and vice versa.

Cwm backups utilize an md5 checksum. You can NOT rename them in a file manager but can rename them in Rom manager in the sense that you are really just giving it a label. As for amon ra, I think you can rename the nandroid backups but will know for sure in a few minutes.

I routinely change names of Nandroids using ASTRO file manager. I long press the file name and a menu appears from which I tap "rename." I leave the dates, but replace the suffix of the name with the ROM name.

Amon RA can be renamed with out the use of a buggy program such as ROM Manager. I used to rename my nandroids all the time however in the past few months its a practice I have really gotten away from. I only keep about 3 on the card and on the computer I have maybe 6 other than that I dont' keep anything else. really a good ROM and Titanium Backup can have me back up and running in no time.

ROM MANAGER is a very buggy program that most of us really frown upon around here. We have had to help so many users get out of so many jams from that program. WE all Recommend that one LEARN THE RECOVERY ENVIRONMENT. It really is your friend and is just as easy to learn as that buggy program.

Welcome to the darkside:p

Nandroids are important but keeping 5, even 10 nandroids around is a waste of space imo. There's really no need to keep nandroids around longer than a month. Keeping one safe nandroid on the computer or dropbox is the best course of action.
