"Reply" button on posts AWOL

I don't disagree ;) I'm fightin' the good fight.

Perhaps a compromise... find a way to make the actual displaying of the quote less intrusive. Get rid of the green bar, or simply just literally put the content in "s. Or, go with the @username approach..

Yes this was be design. We don't need a reply button on each and every post on a thread, we're trying to reduce noise. We did put one top left of the thread, that should jump people to the quick reply area.

Change stinks, but I think once everyone is used to it it'll be okay. For the record, a certain someone here hates quotes and I wouldn't be surprised if that was removed too. I don't quite agree with it, so we're testing it in the /news/ forum to see how it does. You will notice, there, there is no reply or quote button.

I'm really sorry to hear this my friend. The "reply" (targeted, single quote) button is paramount to any forum. It provides perspective to one's reply in the grand scheme of the thread. Without that, confusion is eminent. I've never seen this approach and people here clearly do not like it. Going against the grain of the membership is undoubtedly up to the owner but it may be worthwhile to take into account site analytics in relationship to membership desires.

The multi quote button has it's place as well but most people will use that far less than the typical reply button so if anything were to be abandoned, it should be multi quote.

Personal opinion fwiw...it's about 20,000 shades of OCD to feel like either one needs to go. Is the space saved making a difference to anyone besides a clinical overthinker? No is the answer that 99% of people will agree on. The site is now more awkward and as for the /news forum...the lack of replies in that forum is directly proportionate to the missing, commonly available forum buttons which are not present.

Embrace the zero's, if that's the goal. If it's not the goal, that's what's happening. And no amount of talking around the subject with agendas most can't agree with is going to change that.

A million times this.

As others have mentioned, quotes make forum threads make sense. Important context gets lost without them.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't want to spend any significant amount of time on a forum without an easy quoting system. Tripling the difficulty to quoting a message here already has me not wanting to spend much time as it is. Remove it entirely at the forum's peril.

There are a bunch of other forums that I've refused to join because of the clunky forum software they run there. Which is why I ended up here.

I really like this one... And the fun culture here, and the incredibly smart and witty people who somehow put up with me.

If you cut out quotes, replies and other functionality like that, then I'm afraid this wonderful place will fall and I'll be looking for somewhere else to hang around.... And I really don't want to go

@Unforgiven (<- see what I did there?) I know you're being a tad sardonic, but the point is valid.

In a typical SUPPORT THREAD (we are supposed to be a support site, right?) we get questions with multiple responses to the same question. Now, assuming there was only a single question in the first post and the answers were all on point, it is very frequent that someone supplies incomplete or incorrect information so not only the OP but the responder must be addressed and the specific information must be cited. Being able to quote it makes the response convenient, coherent and fluid. Without it, it will be like 12 people giving a lost tourist directions in a crowed bus terminal.

IMO,

the Multi-Quote feature not only Totally Sucks,
it destroys the ability of me being able to maintain focus on what is being discussed.

How in the Hell can I make a reasoned response to a Multi-Quote???

Simply answer is, I don't.... I just "junk that thread" and quit looking at it.

The looser is the 1st poster who was looking for help.
The bigger looser, is going to be this forum if it continues and is not reverted back to the simple 1 quote method.

Multiquoted for truth...

..and all I had to do was hit the quote button, watch the message flash up, find the "insert quotes" button that had appeared at the bottom, faff with a button on another pop-up to confirm that I wanted to include this quote, and there it was. That's three clicks and a scroll to achieve what would previously have been done with one click. Genius.

But the forum looks so much cleaner now. What do you have against progress? :p

What compromise?
It's become quite obvious member input/opinion on what the site looks/feels like is not in the equation whatsoever.

Show me 5 people who favor Xenforo over vBulletin...............................

Then again, why am I posting this,I already know it carries no weight, just venting,THX for listening.............

Reducing the visual clutter around quotes I can understand. But removing quoting functionality altogether would be plain stupid. Sort of like saying we can cut down on clutter by removing people's ability to post on the forum.

(Screenshot quote added for prosperity).

I think the present mess is just that, a total mess... and I don't like it, and I hate the visual clutter.... get rid of those damn bars, they take up 10% of the usable screen.

The demise of the individual reply button also means we need a new "View Source" button. It used to be easy to see how someone did something (for example embed a video). I have never found a good detailed help for the forums. It was a simple matter to find a post which did something I wanted to do and press reply to see an example of doing it.

As an alternative, how about gathering volunteers to write a good comprehensive help for the forums?
