Hi, I saw in another thread that we were running DeFrost on your Desire; is there any chance you could post an idiots guide on how to do that for those of us who might be interested?

The thread on xda is nearly 500 pages long and quite daunting for a newbie.

Thanks in advance.

xda forums in general are a super scary place for us noobs. I managed to install the "DJDroid v1.0-R1 BETA" ROM today, no idea how that compares to the defrost one or any of the others to be honest.

Now that it's rooted though, I'd imagine that flashing to another ROM is going to be very similar process and shouldn't be a problem in the future.

Yep very easy. But please remember, before you flash any rom do a full nandroid backup and I would also recommend a titanium backup too.

Yeh, backups are a must - I had to flash (non-rooted) when the OTA update broke the wifi on unbranded handsets a while back, hated losing my SMS messages and so have learnt from that. I'll look into both backup methods, but I dont mind losing my apps etc much, easy enough to get them back, it's SMS I hate losing for some reason.

Even though I won't need it, I'm looking forward to your guide - I'm sure it'll much easier to follow than the XDA forums.

Oh a question, does the voice input keyboard (IME?) function on the defrost rom? It force closes on the one I am using.

Lovely guide, definitely a few good points in there for those like me who flashed to the 2.2 sense rom following the XDA guide. I'll be grabbing the ROM manager app - much easier than doing it via bootloader!

Cheers Lekky, thanks also for your PM, with that and this guide (that i'll do tomorrow) i'll post my progress for others!

I'm sure it'll be easy for me to do now, i was able to get the Modaco r3.1 rom on my Desire, thanks to the Fake Flash CRI it was well easy ... though i did brick my phone twice!

Edit:

am i blind, dumb or missing out on Nothern humour?

whats with the:

#19 - See #21
#20 - DONE!

Just to clarify, when you do a "nandroid backup" can you restore the backup, and everything will be the same? ie. your network provider won't be able to tell you changed it?

Yep, it's like an image of your phone at that moment. You need to root before following this guide tho

Couldn't see the point of doing that myself on my orange branded handset, after all i wanted to get rid of the crap not save it lol

lol, read my warnings about orange branded handsets though. Everything is reversible its important to remember :)

Not to bother you further(tell me to piss off if I'm stalking you) but my screen is currently running at 85% of battery even at its lowest level. Have you come across this before?

Like that for me too. Never checked before so don't know if it's normal or not. Doesn't seen to effect my battery tho, same as on 2.1 really.

This guide mentions that it comes without sense

Do you have the link to the latest one that has sense built in?

Their is a very beta 2.2, but it's not very stable so I can't recommend using it yet for day to day use

I'm using the sense one right now, have had it for about 20 hours or so. It works but the phone has automatically reported once or twice and a few apps, Facebook, ebuddy have forced closed a couple of times. Voice to text, and the modified keyboard dont work with it at all.

That said, if you want to try it, I'd say to follow lekky's guide to get used to flashing a Rom, then go to xda to look for the Rom and radio. Like Lekky says, its probably not worth doing yet, as it may crash from time to time.
