Root Retrieving your MSL (ENABLE WIN 7 HIDDEN ADMIN)

I was able to get the msl, but when i dialed ##3424# it said i had it incorrect. It was the only 6 digit code near the area it said to go to.....Help?

Just try it again, as WhisperPntr said, the data it's getting is kinda garbled. I thought I had gotten mine too but the right one was only 1 digit difference, i got like 111223 one time, second time was 119223 (of course that's not my MSL, just an example). :) See my post #124, take ownership of the folders where the drivers are and try reinstalling them and connect the phone to a different USB port.

just call vm
and ask ask for your msl

or

just be nice
and theyll give it to you

Finally got it! I ended up repartitioning today for other reasons and figured why not try it on a fresh clean windows install. All went well this time Windows 7 Ultimate 64. I used the TakeOwnership method mentioned above. Thank you everyone for your hard work on this and especially thank you BliND123 for your offer for a Team Viewer session.

called them up, said i was writing an app and i needed to properly test it so it would be nice to get my msl code as i just got this phone blablablah, the lady was like okedoke here it is.

When I asked to obtain that number the rep basically told to to piss into the wind. They do not give the MSL number out under any circumstance!

The instructions state to enter the SPC twice but do not state how to get it. I called VM and played dumb and I think I have it, but the hex editor just gives up the 7's and 0's for me. A former sprint employee told me that the SPC and MSL was the same #. Is that true? My os is 7 home 32bit, The instructions seemed pretty straight forward, But...... Also the instructions say hold the volume buttons down, plug in usb and one of the two drivers should load but I don't see any indication that that happens. I do get the download in progress icon, and everything else seems fine. Any help would be great.

I believe the instructions saying to enter the SPC twice are really just an attempt to get the MSL populated into the phone's memory. You can enter any number here, such as 000000.

Yes, the SPC is the MSL.

If you think you have this 6 digit number already, you can confirm this by trying to put your phone in to DIAG mode. Boot the phone normally, then open the phone app on your phone (that you use to dial numbers in order to make calls). Dial ##DIAG# (or ##3424#) and you will be prompted to enter the "Service code" (which is the MSL). Try entering the 6 digit number which you think you is your MSL in this text box. If a black screen comes up with a listing that says:
DIAG
Disable

...then you have your MSL. If you tap on this listing, you can enable DIAG mode. If you enter the wrong MSL number, then you will be prompted again for it. If you enter it wrong again, the phone should reboot.

Thanks for the MSL # test. The number given by the rep. was not the MSL. After viewing the page 3 of this thread following Giantpune's post about using 000000's, and holding the volume buttons asap it worked first try. Thanks to all who have helped!:smokingsomb:

Finally got my MSL!!! :D

Win7 Professional 64 bit, Administrator account activated and used.
All files downloaded from links on this forum except 7zip which I already had.
All programs launched using right click --> Run as Administrator from either the actual .exe file, or shortcut to it on desktop - none from the Start menu.
Swapped USB ports a couple of times
Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers.
Tries #1 and #3 had large files when zipped (as per WhisperPntr's reference) but nothing at the suggested hex offset. Tries #2, 4, and 5 had small .zip files, and also nothing.
Try #6 had a large zip file, and at the hex offset it ALMOST looked like the right data (instead of a chain of 6 numbers, there was a chain of 3 numbers, a letter, and 2 numbers. Some of the surrounding data looked ALMOST like WP's example. That gave me the confidence to run it one more time.
Try #7, large .zip, went to the hex offset 07496A80, and there was a 6 digit number (3 of which matched try #6's result). Dialed the diagnostic number, entered it in, and it worked!

Also found at the following locations:
063DA370/063DA380 (wraps on two lines)
0B903880
0B910490/0B9104A0
0B910CB0
0B910DC0

Thanks to everyone whose previous experiences helped guide me.

Thanks for the write up! AND blindside info as well have a rooted optimus elite!

Window 7 Home if anybody cares!

check me off as one whose failed to do this as well. I tried it on 3 different computers, windows 7 enterprise, home premium, and starter edition.

Did the enable hidden admin method and logged in with that administrator account.

Did exactly to the instructions, even what appears mundane like entering a fake MSL to get it to shut down each time to charge mode. Each time I'd get that file zip to around 1Meg, one random time it was 18MB, but each time its nothing but a bunch of nothing and funny looking Y's.

Tried bunch of different usb ports each time.
My hunch is the current driver from LG is buggy, unfortunately its the latest you can download today.

OKAY, so I found something out... your MSL should ALWAYS look like this OR extremely similar.. what i did to find mine is:
THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE A NON-Corrupt ebi0_cs0.bin

ctrl f,
type: 50n

i keep doing the debugging exe and i still get 0s and f's i need help
wanna root

Please read through the entire thread. If you are unable to pull a complete or uncorrupted bin file after trying everything that other users tried, there is little anybody will be able to do to help you.

Also got my MSL thanks to this thread, thanks guys! Took some doing, but got it without cheat codes (Virgin Mobile Customer Service). Makes the game way more fun if you ask me!

...and Houston, we have root once again! (don't attempt the Beats Audio just yet) Many thanks to everyone's efforts in this! Hopefully we will have a good recovery and rom dev soon! Thanks again to salvy512 and all of his efforts to help me fix my old, bricked phone!

I used this method based on the original post word for word (Used Admin account, did it from a "clean" system meaning I had not installed the LG drivers up to that point).

The only thing i did different was, before the dump, I held the volume button in immediately right after the two failed MSL code entries (Phone was displaying "Rebooting: Powering down").

Held down until Downloading mode was displayed.

Dumped perfectly 1st time. At first the dump was running slow, so I turned off my antivirus at around 12% overall and the dump moved along fairly fast at that point. I guessing it was slowed down by it may be coincidence.

Thanks to everyone who worked on this, especially WhisperPntr. Took Maybe 45mins and I was moving slow, making sure to carefully follow directions to the letter. Could be down in less than an hour. That's a lot better than waiting on hold for 2 hours and hoping to get an MSL from VM.

Running Win 7 x64 Professional. Did not use "TakeOwnershipEx"
Two files ebi0_cs0.bin, and ebi0_cs1.bin were created, seemed to be a orig and a copy. Both 262MB uncompressed, with every option unchecked prior to dump.

I recommend disabling anti-virus prior to dump to increase dump speed. Might be causing bad dumps? Just a guess.

This makes me think, as to why it's so hard. Why can't you guys just use RevSkills or use ConnectBot? Those are two methods I prefer.

Everyone whose had problems, try that holding down the volume rocker from the moment you type in the wrong MSL's until it gets into the download mode. I just had my replacement phone arrive today cuz my other one rebooted randomly on me at work and I got good files using this method. So not sure if its just the new phone happens to work with pulling the memory off it or if it was this difference in procedure.

For new people following this thread....

What is frustrating the most is the original instructions aren't even edited to say when to plug your phone in, I feel your pain, I had to guess.

When you first are asked to enter your SPC/MSL....well, how are you supposed to enter it when that is the code we're trying to find out here!!

Follow the instructions by the guy a few pages back...who clearly and helpfully says to enter 000000 and 000000 when asked for your SPC. And then IMMEDIATELY hold down the volume buttons....that guy is awesome, because my first two attempts following just the original instructions led to nothing, but trying that guys recommendations worked the first time. I think the original poster is too stubborn to edit his instructions and people are wasting their time.

I was unable to find the sec_code from logcat data, maybe I didn't dump right. That's why I used this method.

Plus there's a lot of novices trying to do this.

Never used RevSkills before...will look into it.
