Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I think I figured it out.
I was looking at my download folder and I found the problem.

As I mentioned I had used the htcdev method on another phone in the past. When I copied it to the /usr/bin/
folder I just used the command line copy command and used the filename for the attachment to the email I received.

I was looking at my download folder and saw that I had two files: Unlock_code.bin and Unlock_code(1).bin. The first one was leftover from when I did the other phone. I moved the second one to another directory and renamed it Unlock_code.bin and copied it to /usr/bin.

Freeze them with Titanium Backup or just rename them by adding a ".bak" to the end of the file name using a root Explorer of any kind.

They're in /system/app.

Never remove until you verify that whatever you froze didn't bork your phone and never modify or remove without a nandroid backup first.

That's always the right advice but in your case it's essential - the community isn't active anymore, no one is going to be here in a jiffy to help with accidental or erroneous deletions.
 
Ok I'm new to rooting and all but I'm stuck and could use some help.
For starters my phone has the 2.18.001 hboot, and the build software is 5.07.651.6 with 2.3.5 for the android version and my phone is not activated(just got the phone from my brother as he has upgraded to a new phone. Also he has never rooted this phone. I have the most resent java and most resent HTC manager (3.1.37.2). Now I'm trying the HTCdev method and downloaded all the files I'm told to download and have followed every step up to step 5( on HTCdev website and step 8 on here) and this is where I am having issues. I made the android folder and put it on my desktop and put all 3 of the files(fastboot, adb and AdbWinApi.dll) in the folder and then I turned off fast boot on my phone, when in to hboot(turned off phone, took out battery and put back in, hit volume down + power, highlighted the fastboot option and selected it and went into that menu. I didn't touch any thing else in this menu and I plugged in my phone to the computer and then I right clicked with shift on the android foler and opened cmd and I typed in fastboot oem get_identifier_token like I'm told and when I hit enter it says waiting for device and then does nothing. I waited for like 15 min and still says waiting for device. I don't get any where farther than this. Is there some thing I'm doing wrong or some thing I missed? or could my phone be messed up and is not finding the identifier token I need?
Any help would be great!

Its ok and sorry for my really late reply lol. Yes I have tried a different usb port and cord still doing the same thing. Even got a new battery on ebay thinking maybe that was it(since my other battery was bad) but still didn't fix it. Battery is fully charged too

I've seen issues such as this...I'd have to poke around some to find it.

Greetings and salutations. I'm hoping one of you fine folk around here will be able to lend me a hand. My OG Evo is unlocked but I still have S-on. I tried to use revolutionary or unrevoked to turn it off but it seems either the website is down (revolutionary) or I am denied the necessary files (unrevoked). I get no error message from the unrevoked site by the way it just sits there trying to download. I tried using rumrunner as well but to no avail. I currently have HBOOT-2.18. Is there any other way to get S-off. Please excuse my ignorance and thank you for your time and patience.
 
There's an xda article about this, but it ultimately takes you to the link I provided in the previous post. I've used this several times, never had a problem doing it this way

Did you follow the captain throwback's method to lower your misc partitions so that revolutionary or unrevoked can root your phone.......follow the guide here.

Doesn't sound like he did. Is that the method I linked him to? Or were you talking about something different? Not trying to sound smart at all, sorry if I do
 
I started out using Captain Throwback's method method but when I went to the link for unrevoked I could not download unrevoked3 for Linux. I also tried unrevoked forever but it kept asking me to download an empty file. The guide link the Captain references also seems to be incomplete as there is no Section 2 - Rooting Procedure present which I would assume contain more information about S-off.

Then I went another route with revolutionary but their website revolutionary.io appears to be defunct now so I could not continue with S-off.

After this point I just restored phone to default and accepted OTAs to bring me to hboot-2.18, unlocked my phone and hence where I sit right now. Sorry for the long drawn out explanation but I wanted to make sure I was divulging all the steps I took.

I didn't think about this yesterday, but I believe rumrunner is still downloadable, and works with that phone. Works with Linux. rumrunner.us
 
Tried out rumrunner and I got this output:

hmm, cap is on tighter than I expected........
hell, that damn cap is on REALLY tight.......
unfortunately this isn't going to work out with your configuration. you have 2 options:
1.) flash an unsecure kernel that's compatible with your ROM and retry rumrunner (preferred and most reliable method).
2.) flash a different rom.
NOTE: No amount of messing around with su binaries and apk's is going to fix this issue for you!!!.

After this I flashed Freedom-v0.9-UNIVERSAL-signed kernel but still the same output. Any other suggestions?

When you tried rumrunner, was fastboot unchecked? Also you are using the Sprint or the Verizon Evo. I believe 2.18 is Sprint version?
 
Fastboot was unchecked and I'm using the Sprint Evo. Well I was able to locate a tarred version of unrevoked3 for linux so I re-attempted Captain's method but now I'm getting a library error. Not sure how many linux users we have here but here's the error:
./reflash: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I have verified that that particular graphic library (libgtk2.0-0) is installed.

I actually do all my HTC and Motorola rooting with Linux. It seems to.go much smoother. Generally when you're getting that error, it's because Linux isn't able to locate the corresponding .so file. You either need to long hand the commands and point directly to that file, or you can unzip the file, right click the .so, and then highlight the "run from terminal" option.
 
Turns out my issue with the libraries was that I needed to install the 32bit versions so I did. Then it would tell me that unrevoked would fail. Feeling frustrated I moved over to a Win7 machine and ran the unrevoked executable. I finally achieved S-off but unrevoked indicated that it couldn't flash recovery and quit after that. I figured I just needed to do an HTCdev unlock but when I try to flash the unlock token I get FAILED (remote: not allowed). The first Evo I rooted years ago didn't give me this much grief. I guess I'm rustier than I thought. Thanks again for all the help. I'll continue at it tomorrow.
 
Okay so this is where it could get aggravating. If you have s-off now, and your win7 machine is giving you the remote not allowed error, it could be one of several things; however, on an s-off HTC on Windows, it is usually a driver issue. The rasiest thing to do is to install HTC sync, let it completely install, restart the pc, and then uninstall HTC sync. It will give you a box during the uninstall providing the option to also uninstall the drivers, make sure that box is NOT checked...then continue the uninstall
