Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

well it's not matching up... i either get the no such file message or if I type cat then press enter then type the commands i get that triple output look but the # only appears once before I type cat. here is an exact copy and paste of what my prompt looks like with what I tried:

C:\Users\Jacob (last name)\Desktop\andriod>adb shell
# cat
cat
/sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
/sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
/sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
/data/local/tacoroot.sh --undo
/data/local/tacoroot.sh --undo
/data/local/tacoroot.sh --undo

but the way the instructions say look like this:
C:\Users\Jacob (last name)\Desktop\andriod>adb shell
#cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
/sdcard/flash_image: no such file or directory

should I reset the phone to factory settings?

doing one can't hurt.

doing one can't hurt.

okay, I'll give it a try real quick and start over. I'll let you know what happened.

okay, did a factory reset and got to step 12 and drum roll.... the "no such file" message did not appear. It now looks just like it should. all 3 commands in the # line didn't do anything unexpected. so i guess I am going to continue now and I will let you know if something unexpected happens.

cool beans. let us know.

Okay great news... my hboot is now 2.10!!!!!! so everything was successful. Thank you guys. one more quick question, the part about using unrevoked... do I need to do the pre-rooting section or just go to "rooting procedure"? or is there another section I should use?

Most of it can be skipped, just make sure you're in charge only, debugging is on, and HTC sync is uninstalled

NICE!!!!!!!!!

that is up to you. but since you already did the factory reset then you probably skip it.

thank you guys!!! you all have been a HUGE help. hopefully all this will help someone in the future. It seems just a factory reset was the answer to the step 12 issue, at least for me.

that is just weird. but i will remember that. thanx for posting your solution and update.

okay, i'm sorry to have another question, when following the unrevoked driver install instructions it says to go to bootloader and hboot usb then plug it up to my computer... well my phone keeps loading the update from the pc36img... do i need to remove that file from my phone before doing unrevoked?

Yes, and congrats on your success, odd that it may be but hey! you got it goin' on now mister!!!!

I'm considering rooting my phone mainly because I want to get rid of the excess bloatware (NASCAR app, blockbuster, etc) on my Evo 4g (wimax). I have been trying to research the various methods for my phone, which runs the 2.3.5 version currently. I have no desire to reflash to a custom firmware, I want to keep the stock senseUI experience, just want it rooted. I have been looking at this particular thread as well as the unrevoked3 site. Theirs seems to indicate that when I do their rooting program, it won't wipe / reflash/reformat the phone, it will exist as is, just in a rooted state. Yours seems to indicate the opposite - that all data will be wiped. That said, your site also lists an older "stock OTA firmware", making me wonder if the 1st page guide is simply out of date, of if you guys just go about it different ways for different reasons and in fact, your method WILL wipe my phone. Hope that makes sense? (lol)

Thanks in advance,

rooster

Welcome to AF!
At the beginning of the guide you saw this?

irst lets make sure that this guide is for you. before we do anything make sure that you have disbaled fastboot. on you phone go to settings>apps>uncheck the fastboot option at the bottom. next you will need to power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader screen.
Is your bootloader locked?
If it is, then it will need to be unlocked via the HTCdev method (easiest) and yes it will wipe your data etc....this will be sufficient if you only want a stock rooted rom (after steps 2 and 3 listed under the HTC dev method)
So, if you can post back here was your bootloader screen says, we can help you out. :)

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
unrevoked will not work for your phone now. keep in mind that with each ota (for the most part) will patch up any previous exploits used to root the phone. when the gingerbread ota first came to the og evo, it closed the exploit used by unrevoked.

the only way that i see you to not loose data is to use the taco root method. i do not think the taco root method wipes data so you should be ok. but i would still back up everything you can just in case.

Tnx for all the fast replies :)

So I realize this is going to be a highly subjective question but..

To free up some space (which is why I want to remove those bloatware apps), do ya'll think it would be worth it for me to go ahead and do the root (htcdev or taco, as/if applicable), or should I just suck it up and deal with the low space (or delete a couple phone-only apps)? In my mind I'm undecided, lol.. There are pros and cons either way, the biggest con being the reset, losing everything. Twice since I've owned the phoen since launch I've had to perform factory resets, so starting from scratch is no new thing, but that said, I've hated it every time.

As a small aside - Is there any tool/app (rooted or not) that will like scan the phone memory and SD card and report/remove identify apps that are there but not like, currently installed? (like a registry cleaner for windows). As mentioend, I've started from scratch twice, and both times, I don't know about the main memory, but the sd card contents remained. I know for a fact there are apps on it that my phone does not 'know' about. Would like to safely remove those..

Thanks again :)

Well, if you decide to root, one of the benefits is a process to partition your sd card. And used in conjunction with Dark Tremors a2sd, will free up tons of internal space. You can have as many as 180 apps (some have that many) on your phone...(which are actually on the sd-ext of your sd card)
More about that later.

Now, you can manually go thru your "manage apps" and delete the ones you do not use.
As far as a "registry type" cleaner, I am unsure.

You can, as you stand now, move apps to sd card, but only part of the app will be moved.
Also, some apps cannot, and should not be moved to sd card. The app dev. will state that on the playstore site.

You can use something like MyBackup to backup some things stated in the op of this thread.

It's your decision ultimately to root or not....imo, it's worth it... As another benefit of rooting, you can make a backup...kind of a save point for your phone...if anything goes wonky, you can restore from a backup you made .....Like a restore point on a computer, or a game save.

i think that is so worth rooting. the advantages far out weigh any disadvantages which i can't think of any really.

this is a good link to read:http://androidforums.com/faqs/443432-what-root-being-rooted-mean.html

and its not in the guide but with taco root there is a way to save your data but the process is longer and i can walk you thru it if you like. but taco root is the only way to do it.

now my backup pro does a pretty good job at backing up things prior to root.

once you are rooted we have an app called titanium backup that backs your apps and its data. it is also great for freezing apps. you want to do this as some of the bloatware maybe needed for the stock rom to function properly.

but like mikey said, it is up to you.

Nah, that's actually part of the problem. My phone had that funky constant reboot problem. Only way to fix was to what I call reinstall the OS, IE factory wipe. But, it didn't wipe the sd (which, my DCIM folder, media folder and ebook folder are happy about). So what would happen, is.. I'd have a factory fresh phone. I'd install "widget A" (generic name) to my phone. If it supported ap2sd, I'd move it over to the sd. It would fail (because it was once already there, and STILL there). I would then have to tell it a second time to move to sd, and it would just fine. Curious, I hooked the phone to my PC, and of course I saw tons of folders and files for apps that were once installed, but never removed because of the factory wipe. So these programs don't show up under apps management, because as far as the phone knows, they aren't installed. I'm not brave enough to know which folders I can safely just remove from there, so the result is I have an sd card which has apps on it, some of which are installed and functioning, and some of which are sitting on there but not installed. Why didn't I reinstall everything I had on there after the 1st wipe, you ask? LoL, like anyone, I've had a lot of apps! Some of which I used frequently, some obviously saw one or two uses and probably would have been erased down the road, had my phone not gotten wiped first. lol.

Back on topic though, I think I will do it, just kind of bummed now, it was going to be my day project, but now, I need to prepare for a wipe session, which means lots of time making sure I have this and that copied/moved/backed up etc.. You all know the drill, and like most, it's just something I'm not looking forward to. I so much more liked the "plug phone in and poof, root." method, wich I'd jumped on it earlier when it was possible. ;(

yeah the apps2sd is kind of a lame idea by htc. it really does nothing but screws things up like this. i say back your sd card up to your computer and then wipe the card and start over. and if your interested in having more apps you might want to skip down to the second post. there is a section on partitioning your sd card so that you can have tons of apps.

and keep us posted on how your root went or if you have more questions you liked to ask.

and one last thing like i said you can still root with taco root and not loose anything but it is a little more involved then what is in the guide.
