Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

damn that was fast lol.. yes i did install the custom recovery... as for flashing the su im not too sure.. im pretty i didnt skip a step.. let me go over it again

it is step 4 that you have do over again. no need to start from the beginning. you need to flash the su file first before moving on.

So can you tell me what good ROMs and Themes I can try as a firsttimer? been reading alot, I see that the new MikG v3.1 is out or might be to much for my first rom. when I flash what should be on the sdcard? just the rom? or ?
Thanks again

ok on your phone download from he market the superuser app and install it. now lets try step 8

still having problems.. i cant get root access whatsoever.. im wondering if doing the tacoroot and then trying to do the htcdev and captain throwback method is whats causing this to happen

progress!!! found out what i did wrong.. now im at step 10..

Download Froyo PC36IMG.zip from here, rename to "PC36IMG.zip", and place on root of SD Card. Reboot into Bootloader, and follow the prompts to update device (Notice in the below picture that the watermark shows as "LOCKED" again).

i put the file on the and it shows that its reading it but then it goes away and the

fastboot
recovery
clear storage
simlock
hboot usb

comes back

well i totally agree with mikg3.1. i just flashed it and it is pretty sweet so far.

and read this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html
read the after rooting section. it has a ton of info including how to flash roms. use that to flash mikg3.1

have you tried to re-download the file? it could be a bad download.

yeas.. i re downloaded it 3 times already

ok and are you sure the commands for the mtd and flash image files worked? did the commands for them matched up with what captain's guide shows? the output needs to match exactly or the misc partition will not get upgraded and you will not be able to downgrade your hboot.

yes everything matched up perfectly

ok so that is weird. i had a similar issue with my evo. rather then explain it, you can read here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/504184-omg-me-evo-alive.html

but what i did was use the usb fix found in this thread:[ How-To ] Fix SD card not being detected & USB port not working - xda-developers. it was very similar to what captain's guide was doing. i do not think that this will hurt anything if you want to try it. just make sure to delete the two files (mtd and flash image files) off of your sd card first as the usb fix files are named the same. i cant guarantee this will work for you however as your situation is a little different. or you can wait for the captain to chime in as i'm all out of ideas for you.

I seem to be having a pretty strange issue. I'm trying to unlock my bootloader through the HTC Dev site, however when I log in to my account and then select "All other supported models" I then try to click the green "Begin Unlock Bootloader" button and nothing happens. Whenever I click the button I do not get directed to a new site. Nothing happens in my progress bar. I have tried this on my laptop (Mac) and my work computer (PC). Any ideas? Is this happening to anyone else?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I can't stand the stock rom anymore.

Are u flashing this in recovery? What exactly does it say?

yes flashing in recovery
i goto flash from sdcard and select the file it starts and I get the following
--installing:/sdcard/superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E: Can't open /sdcard/superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip

I tried the TACOROOT method; I got stuck on the last step, the one that loads PC36IMG.zip. The HBOOT loads the file, I even see a progress bar moving from the botton to the top on the top/right side of the evo screen. However, when the progress bar completes to the top, I ended up with the following msg...

Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No

Any idea on how to resolver this issue? THanks in advance!

just to be sure you do not have any other PC36IMG file on your card? if so make sure you delete it. if no other file named that is on your card, then did all of the other steps go according to what is in the guide? you did the mtd and flash image steps correct? did the output matched to what is shown in the guide exactly?

I was having that issue. I logged out and logged back in, and that solved it.

Using HTCDev, I can't get the Android SDK Platform Tools and Android SDK Tools to load. I get this error: Failed to create directory C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\temp. Any ideas?

edit: I tried creating ...android-sdk\temp and now I get this error: File not found C:\Program Files\android-sdk\temp\platfrom-tools_r10-windows.zip (access is denied)

edit2: It was late when I did this, so it didn't occur to me...

if you get this error after step 5a. Run the “SDK Manager.exe” which is found in \android-sdk-windows\

Note: actually on my computer it was in \android-sdk\ not \android-sdk-windows\ Not sure if I chose that path or if it just saved there when I installed from Oracle

just right click on SDK Manager.exe and "Run as administrator". You will not get the "access is denied" error.

HOWEVER: I don't think you need to do this step as long as you just download the files from OP's response to this post (Next post).

Thank you ocnbrze for the thread and your support.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i would not put the the entire android sdk in the android folder. just extract it to some where you can find it. all you really need is three files. fastboot.exe, adb.exe and AdbWinApi.dll to be in the android folder.

here they are if you need it:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8709935/fastboot.exe
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8709935/adb.exe
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8709935/AdbWinApi.dll

I checked my SD and there is only one PC36IMG.zip, Yes, I did all of the other steps go according to what is in the guide. I also did the mtd and flash image. I did not enter the SU command on step 12 becuase I was the following the instructions and then I found out that there was a screenshot of step 12 . This is a replacement phone cause my old rooted EVO 4g with hboot 2.10 sank into the water. :-(
Is it safe to retry TACOROOT method from step 1?

Thanks
