Ridiculous Battery, I'm not even joking

Hi everyone, I'm new to Android Forums and I find every forum exemplar. I get so much new info for my new desire especially on the battery topics. I got my new Desire for around 3 months now and I absolutely LOVE it!! The only gripe I have on this phone is the horrendous battery life. Disclaimer: I have READ numerous threads on battery issues and I seem to have no help whatsoever from them.

I've tried
1) Task manager ( Advance task manager for froyo) Installed, and uninstalled
2) Uninstalling CPU-Hogging Apps
3) The HTC Calibration tool (Charge phone 8hrs+, turn off charge 1 hr, turn on wait 2 min, turn off charge 1hr) many times
4) Disabling ALL if not most push/ refreshing tools (Push email, refreshing facebook, accounts and sync, etc)
5) Use 2G if possible, and disable wifi and 3g whenever I don't use
6) Installed Juicedefender

I currently have turned off all if not most of my push emails and push data applications and rarely use 2G. I'm not really a heavy user, I probably browse the web only 30min - 1 hour, check email manually once every hour, use 2g ALL the time, Wifi if available, and listen to music probably 2 hours everyday. I never use youtube by the way, since it wastes alot of battery.

My total battery life lasts 3-4 hours, and I'm not joking. People say that 8-10hrs of use is horrendous but i would DIE for that amount of battery life. I use my phone very minimally and have NO idea why the battery life is that horrible. I have bought an extra battery and even with it, my phone doesn't last the entire day.

I'm currently running Froyo NON root with the installed apps, (if necessary)

As you can tell, I don't have many apps. I probably never play games on my phone as well. Mostly text and rarely call. My phone is UNLOCKED by the way, bought from Europe. I'm using it on Rogers right now on 2G. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

I'm in the same boat as you mate. Yet, I have hardly any apps.

I've tried everything and nothing seems to improve it.

Have you considered rooting?

SetCPU, which requires root, lets you underclock the processor when the screen is turned off (i.e. when you don't really need it) and has literally doubled my battery life.

If you get an undervolted kernel too you can extend it even further.

That would mean losing everything though?

Well since it's part of that "everything" thats causing your issue, thats not a bad thing.

Like Lecter mentions, you can backup SMS and call logs (and contacts if not using google) using the mybackup trial.

it wouldn't hurt to factory reset it. and its all worth it if it does end up saving your phones battery life... anything is worth a try.

I've tried a factory reset but i got no luck. Rooting is out of the question as well because I don't have the balls to do it. If only SETCPU was non root available.

SetCPU would help a little but fundamentally there is something else VERY wrong.

Perhaps if a factory reset didn't help, you could actually have a faulty battery.

You may be able run SetCPU without root, but I havent tried it.

See this post by droidzone, advising of an app that applies a "temporary root"

Give it a go and let us know if it works.

However, as I said earlier, this is treating the symptoms, not the cause.

To be honest, i'd be taking it back and asking for a replacement if I were in your shoes.

3-4 hours just sounds like a fault.

Yeah 3-4 hours when the phone is pretty much doing nothing does sound faulty.

I kill my battery using it for internet, sms, music over BT, games messing about with new ROMS etc on my commute to work everyday. before rooting I used to be down to 30-50% by the time I got into work but now using DeFroST I am managing to get that upto 60-80% daily so I am seeing a big improvement.

That being said you should not have to root to get a half decent battery life, you sound like you accept that this phone is not going to last days but a good 6-8 hours of hard use is ok.

Personally I would send it back as it sounds like something is faulty and a reset ain't sorted it.

Set CPU NEEDS root.

I would say that a battery that only lasts 3 - 4 hours is faulty, the problem you have with returning it is that its 4 months old and the vendor is probably going to refuse to exchange. I would take it back to the shop as it is at least worth a try, but from what I understand about the current crop of HTC battery's is that they are very good, and I would not recomend buying an unbraded battery.

Err... I may be going snow blind but no-one's actually suggested the standard stuff yet. You need to look at the Partial Wake usage (*#*#4636#*#* on the dialer - or download Spare Parts - and then go to Battery History) to see if you have a rogue app running the processor constantly (3-4 hours sounds about right for 100% CPU).

The Battery History is also useful - is your Android System usage high ?

im in agreement with everyone here....4 hour battery life is most likely a device fault..

expect a days use of medium to heavy use...but also remember the tech in these things are getting to a point where our battery tech wont keep up and we CANT go any further just yet with battery tech...

just like with laptops etc...hell no one complains of 4 hours or so use outta them....so a days use out of something like the latest smartphone given what they can do...I'd say is pretty good..

Im not new to forum but i like to read and not to comment. This time as user who didnt do anything to prevent battery drainage i must say that with heavy use i get battery to last full day.
2-3 % battery lost when sleeping
20 % lost when on work ( 20 min of music- travel time to and from work :) , calls, messages )
50 % in worst case scenario for gaming, browsing, videos -- heavy use for 3 hours

Im satisfied with battery life because, lets be honest, its limited with battery capacity.

Must admit its pain to charge it every nigh, but thats price im willing to pay.

stalker!!!!

either a dud battery or dud device,
only time you could drain a battery that quickly is by hammering games (gone in about 2 hrs)

I'm not sure if I could get a replacement. I bought my phone in Europe and now I'm in Canada so i probably couldnt go back. I own two batteries, one from the HTC Desire and one from the Nexus one which BOTH have only 3-4 hours of battery life. The main thing sucking my phone's battery is Android System and Cell standby. Also, if I dont charge overnight, I lose 10% battery doing nothing even in airplane mode. (No alarms, nothing. Just in lock mode doing nothing)

I get 3 to 4hrs out if mine to... I use mine a little more than you do yours.

The battery is certainly poor and I'm ckmtenplating getting a new one just to see if that improves things a little....
