Root [ROM][ALPHA][5.1.1] Dirty Unicorns 4/29/2015

I like flashing recoveries via fastboot personally. [emoji4] gives me a feeling of actively participating lol... GUIs take all the glory.

Being that you are rooted you should go to the Google play store and download an app called [Root]Rashr- flash tool, that will flash a custom recovery for you.

You'll need one of these recoveries:
-TWRP-

*Just chose one, I personally like CWM because I feel it's more stable, but TWRP is more user friendly with it's touch interface*

So, to backtrack just a moment, after you download the [Root]Rashr- flash tool app from the play store you're going to need to extract the recovery.img from one of the above Zip files you just downloaded.

You will be able to chose flash recovery img in [Root]Rashr-flash tool. You'll need the recovery.img that you extracted from the recovery zip file.
Now that I look at Rashr, it'll just be easier if you put the recovery.img file at the root of your internal SD and you can cancel or say no to the first two windows that pop up in the app and just go to the second option in the app (Recovery from storage) then just find where you put the recovery.img

Thank you so much for the detailed instructions, I really need those haha. Eliminates a lot of future questions but I know I'll still have some along the way. I already have TWRP but I guess it isn't the latest build or something, but the version is 7.5.1.3 if that helps. Did I not flash it or something that would make my recovery have more options? I'll probably just go ahead and download that TWRP link you gave me since it's probably more current than the one I have. Something obviously wasn't working right lol.

"fastboot is a small tool that comes with the Android SDK (software developer kit) that can be used to re-flash partitions on your device. It is an alternative to the recovery mode for doing installations and updates."

Fastboot can be used to manually flash recoveries, boot.img etc most people use it for kernels, radios and recoveries...for a lot of devices fastboot can restore soft bricks or various nastiness.

When I refer to a "GUI" I'm making reference to a user interface with a one click, hit a button and forget it application or programs for a computer that execute various scripts etc.

I appreciate the value and ease of use of GUI based solutions but I think everyone needs basic adb and fastboot knowledge because in reality if things go south so to speak, there's simply somethings a script or apk can't fix.

Since u have twarp u can flash twrp in recovery after u do that make sure u all ways make back up first .this phone is hard to brick but all ways be care full good luck we are here to help:)
 
GUI...interface. Every thing you see on the screen is pretty much that. Web pages are even that. Touch the fancy button and it triggers a command function. That's about the extent of it. Created to make carrying out commands easier on users. Otherwise it all would be text based,command line functions...pretty boring and exhaustive. Glad we have them :)
 
To answer some questions, offline charging is setup in the kernel, and if I remember correctly so is the selinux mode, though, it might also be controlled or at least have a reference in the build.prop. Also I believe the kernel source is mostly from the Nexus 5, though I could be mistaken. Damn sure I saw references in the kernel to it when I was last digging around. Give me a bit and I may have a custom kernel for you to test to address some of the issues. Finally got a day off work, been pulling 60hrs+ lately cause, I got a baby due in two weeks!

True...but my point is that some people (not yourself of course) wouldn't know fastboot from fast food and are in a sense crippled by GUIs.

But back on topic my buddy flashed this ROM and can't believe its the same device. Hard to believe Phenom has been developing for this device for over a year already. Kuddos to you PhenomX4. [emoji106] this phone has as much dev support from one person as some devices have from droves of devs and dev teams. Again, well done.

phenom has been the ONLT dev this phone has had. dude is a rom factory. sure there's been tinkering on stock roms from a number of us...but hes the only one to build from scratch. i never developed a true interest in the device after getting it. the sound quality in calls and music killed it for me. i have not taken much interest in none of my new devices. not just the awe. ive tried but cant seem to keep motivated. glad guys like phenom are.

Congratulations on the baby!! And thanks to phenomx4 and all of you who enlighten us on not just the releases of Roms, kernels etc but also for helping us all understand how the droid machine works and giving us a clearer picture of exactly what is all these words like GUI etc mean.. Because alot of us do care more than jus, flash this and ur phone changes lol thanks so much!

Yeah I haven't owned it for about 5-6 months but I like the people in this forum and am morbidly curious about what phenomx4 will do next. Strangely at least here in Vegas the device has creeped back up to around the 79.99 mark at a lot of places...which is tough to pay (spec wise) when the Moto E LTE is 49-59 bucks same with the tribute, Moto G and a couple other mid rangers but if someone wants a device with a solid dev the Awe is still a great option.

Thanks for the congrats fellas! You guys are not going to believe the progress I've made... The camera almost completely boots on this kernel! It has to be opened repeatedly to happen, so I'm thinking the issue is either with the restart loop, like the one they had a fix for with some CM11 builds (its on googleplay), or something to do with surfaceflinger. Made some progress with offline charging too, still no battery icon or led yet, but I'm sure I'm getting close and it does work, so no bricks if you kill the battery and dont have a spare to use. The backlight will turn on like it should too. Tested all sorts of configs with sleep, powering off and usb charging. No reboots, and there seems to be no issues other than what's been stated already. Here's to getting Dirty with the Unicorn! Check it out! Flash in recovery. Can we get a bench on this too please?

Great Rom. Thanks. One question, how may I get into diagnostic mode in this rom? In stock rom, I went to Diag mode by dialing *983*87274# but it doesn't work in this rom.
