If I'm not mistaken, only Sprint based carriers (on Sprint towers) use CDMA now a days. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Sprint/Boost is also phasing out their iDen network and upgrading the majority of their towers. I believe that has a lot to do with the intermittent service people are experiencing.
I've considered T-Mobile and will probably end up going with them when I decide to change carriers. I've heard good things about them. Other than the shitty Boost CS, I'm happy with their service right. My wife and I both are on the unlimited plan and both our bills only total $75 a month.
