Root [ROM] GummyJAR 2.5 - 12/28/10

Oh I'm sorry. You must have me confused with someone who knows WTF is going on in programming. Installing zips and stuff like that is the extent of my ability.

I love this Rom but having some call and text messaging issues. Also had my first reboot today. I may give it a few more days but if all else fails, im back to ApeX.

I can just nandroid back to that though right? Or do I have to wipe cache and data and reinstall it?

Thanks guys.

Hey - just wanted to thank everyone for their help, but I've decided to go back to the stock ROM for now (although I did save an image of my latest GJ creation, so I may come back to it at some time).

The stock ROM just has so many features I use that weren't a part of GJ, and the time it would take to find them in the market just made it easier to stay with stock. These were the issues I found:

No native porting of Yahoo email (in the stock ROM every time I have a new message sent I get a notification in the top status bar and can read it without even opening my Yahoo account - 1-click access, which just rocks!)

No native on/off widgets for GPS/Wifi/BT/Airplane mode. I did find some in the market but they didn't match and the look on the desktop page was ugly IMO.

Lost my fave battery indicator - it will not load into GJ:(

One other thing - I did a quick Quadrant test before and after my first GJ install:
Stock ROM rooted but no mods: 1410
fresh GJ install, no mods: 1353

Note: I just did the OC procedure in RoOoLeR's Guide and on the stock Rom, 1.2 Ghz @ 64 VSEL I just achieved 1614 on Quadrant!

I'm gonna stick with modding the stock ROM for now since it provides easy access to a lot of things I use all the time, but I may go back to GJ and other custom ROMs at some point in the future.

Thanks again for the help here - this is not intended to bash GJ or anyone who is benefiting from it. Having these ROMs available is great, and I know there is some variation in the build from phone to phone, different options seem to work best for different people using the exact same hardware. This is only day 2 of my experimentation in rooting and the benefits of modding a rooted DX so I'm sure there's a lot of cool stuff yet to be discovered...

^ Just FYI, running Quadrant a single time does not provide an indication of performance. Because there is always stuff running in the background and the system is often doing things (push email, roaming from tower to tower, etc.), the only way to get a good performance check between ROMs is to run it, say, 10 times and average them. You can see a 100pt difference between back-to-back benchmarks.

GJ definitely benchmarks higher than the stock ROM if you do the averages. Not a lot higher, but I get an average of about 50 points or so higher.

Odd that the battery indicator won't load, but there are some great on/off widgets that are skinnable/customizable like SwitchPro, to give you any look you want.

That said, everyone has different tastes... which is why Android is great. We can all use the solution that works best for us.

The nandroid contains backups of everything so it's just going to wipe all of your current partitions when it installs. You don't have to do anything but install the backup.

WTF, you are absolutely right... taste buds vary from person to person. And that is why I love an open platform like Android that gives the user so many different options when it comes to customizing their device. With the iPhone it's like you'd better love the iPhone or you're SOL. But on Android if you don't like Vanilla Android, or Blur, or Sense UI, or TouchWiz... then flash a few custom ROMs and see what you do like.

And even in the area of custom ROMs, none of the ROMs are for EVERYONE. If that were the case then according to this site I should have loved Apex. And while I liked Apex, it wasn't what suited my tastes. According to my tastes everyone should LOVE GummyJAR. But not everyone likes the stripped down nature of this ROM. And if you go by the majority of the people who have ROMed their device, they'll tell you that once you try it you'll NEVER go back to the stock ROM. But WTF seems to like it better.

These are the things that make Android not just a good OS, but a great one. And why I feel that the efforts of the OEMs to lock us out of being able to create custom ROMs for our devices really kills the whole idea that Google created when they launched Android in the first place. This OS isn't supposed to be locked into any one anything. It's supposed to allow us to experiment and create different alternatives to give the user more choices in which to pick from.

I hope that it at least stays as open as it is today. With the Droid 1 it was wide open. With the D2 and DX it became much more limited, but they were at least able to move around a little bit and give us partially custom ROMs. It would be truely sad if in the next generation or two of phones they locked us out completely by finding a way to cut root out entirely.

For me, that would be the death of Android.

+1 - I just tried going back to ApeX because I like the predictive dialer and because custom ringtones work properly on ApeX... That said, I am now back on GummyJAR. GummyJAR is FAST! And with the exception of custom ringtones, it just works! :D:D:D

As much as I like the work that Fab has done on ApeX, I believe that GummyJAR works the way Android is supposed to...

So you like GummyJAR eh? Speed freak like me I take it, no? Well if Black Droid ever gets GPS and the video camera working in Ultimate Droid it will be a must try ROM for guys like you then. I love GJ because it's the closest thing to UD that I've found thus far. But UD is faster than Gummy (just imagine for a minute when you first flashed Apex and thought, "woe, this is FAST man"... then you flashed GummyJAR and realized that your device could operate even faster, right? If you flash UD even after getting used to GJ you will think GummyJAR is slow!).

That's how fast UD is. But don't flash it yet, because it isn't a complete ROM as of now. And I warn you, once you do flash it you will be hopelessly looking for a ROM that can keep up with it. The responsiveness of your DX will spoil you on that ROM forsure.

We'll see... Unfortunately I was around back when BD tarnished his name and got the community up in arms with the D1. I hope that he is working with a little more transparency these days. :)

I don't really pay attention to the drama. If a ROM works well I'll try it. I've never been a big soap opera fan.

Honestly, I don't see how GJ is any faster then ApeX. I'm on GJ for three days now and haven't notice any increases in performance.

Not all devices are created equally. Therefore different phones will react to different ROMs.... well, differently. For instance many people were singing the praises of Rubix Focused and when I flashed it my phone ran slower on it than it did stock.

If GJ isn't for you then it isn't for you. No biggie.

Yea, I had similar experience with RubiX and Tranq -really sluggish .. Haven't tried UD or Obsidian yet, but found Fission, ApeX and GJ equally great on my device. ApeX just have couple of blur apps I missed on fission and gj

I'm back on stock for now only because it does everything I require and use on a daily basis without the need to download and try out apps from the market. It's not to say I'll stay with stock though. But since I just rooted a couple days ago and am very new to this aspect of working with the DX, I want to learn what I can with the stock ROM and go from there.

But I do appreciate hearing from and reading about the experiences of more advanced users - Much Gras to everybody! :D

Edit: Off topic, but I have to say having a rooted phone is awesome - just being able to use the bootstrap app to make a image of the current phone state and then restore to it has saved me at least once - very cool!

Been extremely pleased with how well this ROM plays with undervolting/overclocking, which can be seen with the great battery life.

@Outlaw71 - I'm going to break down and flash UD based on your recommendation... I can't resist! :)

Edit: Just read through the threads on the UD site and I think I'm going to wait... Too many bugs.

I'm not sure I entirely buy this, despite all the evidence that seems to support it. I mean, clearly there are device differences - just look at the variability in overclocks - but I think there's an underlying cause to ROM-specific problems that doesn't have to do with the hardware.

I'm guessing there are install variables to blame, which may include errant files/caches, corruptions on the SD card, perhaps certain ROMs having issues with certain combinations of applications (which is very likely)...

I just have a hard time buying such a huge variability in hardware quality as to actually be "picky" about certain ROMs. I'd be willing to bet that if you take 10 phones, wipe everything and SBF them to bare stock, they'll perform the same... then put the same ROM on all of them, they'll perform the same... etc. I think there are probably usage patterns or application combinations that are causing most of the differences in performance.

The nandroid contains backups of everything so it's just going to wipe all of your current partitions when it installs. You don't have to do anything but install the backup.

Thanks brother!

As much as I like this ROM, there were a few quirks that were bothering me. For now, Im back to ApeX. Will probably be back again at some point though.

Cheers.

I think the dialer is my only issue with this ROM. When I use the Car Home and I use the dialer, it doesn't seem to have a landscape view. It's not a deal closer but a bother. I would also like the Visual Voicemail App from the original rom. The one in the market place is a older version than what is on the rom itself. Otherwise this ROM is great.
