Root [ROM][ICS] Paranoid Android Ver1.6 Beta from source (31JUL2013)

I'm on Day 12 with the July 31 build and pleased to report that this is still running fantastically well :-) Like tamasaurus reports, I also have had absolutely ZERO random reboots and not once have I seen the jumbled text that was so prevalent in previous builds. Since clearing the dalvik and fixing permissions in recovery, the Messaging app does not randomly close anymore. It did close itself one time a few days ago but I did another dalvik wipe & fix permissions, and have not had any more problems. I can certainly live with doing this once a week or so to keep things running smoothly.

I've used the GPS/Navigation a couple times now with no problems at all. And the camera flash/record timing issue I reported earlier this week has not happened again.

GREAT JOB, BSydz!!!

The proximity sensor is really bad. I just made a quick call and when I took the phone away from my ear, the screen went white
I had to hit the power button off and on to get it back.

Thanks. I wiped data again, flashed rom, reboot and flashed gapps. It worked this time.
GPS seems to take quite a few minutes to get a fix, but it is probably no worse than the rom I used before. The control (touchscreen) is not working too well (hard to drag, click mistaken as drag etc.). The font is pretty small. I guess ICS better suited for tablets with larger screen.

Thanks BSydz for your work on this!

Yesterday, I flashed the July 31 rom and it's been working well. The battery life so far has been great.

I'm coming from CM7.

One thing I can't find on this rom is LED notification settings. On CM7, I was able to change led notification colors (red, amber, green) for text message, missed calls, etc. Do these settings exist on this rom? I've spent an hour looking for them.

The control (touchscreen) is not working too well (hard to drag, click mistaken as drag etc.).

This could be due to the limited amount of RAM... ICS uses more ram than previous builds. I've found that touch works great until I load up a couple apps (*ahem* Facebook, Swype, etc). In my case it wasn't the touch driver, but the RAM being pushed beyond the hardware capacity. Tweaking performance options and the background services (in the Developer Options) settings helps. In my case I also decided to sacrifice Swype and keep other RAM hogging apps to a minimum.

The font is pretty small. I guess ICS better suited for tablets with larger screen.

Just change the settings. PA is known for it's ability to change DPI and layout settings, and some things (like Trebuchet AKA the launcher, settings, calendar) have been set for "tablet mode". You can change everything to default (change the individual apps as well as the general settings) and restart.

I don't believe there is a setting for the LED here. You can force the LED on or off for application groups in the Profile settings, but that's it I think.

A couple more thing I noticed:
1. GPS locking takes too long. Sometimes can't get GPS fix outdoors. The solution is to reboot.. I waited 20 minutes to get GPS to work before a trip....
2. Google Maps is not very responsive.. It froze during navigation (text, voice are correct but map stopped updating).. might be resource related...reboot is the fix
3.tether prevents the phone itself from using Internet and tether traffic is not counted in data usage, and still no option to change channel..
4. Sometimes it loses connection and do not seem to reattempt association.. So my phone is occasionally stuck in no service mode until I manually toggle airplane mode

I changed everything in PA setting to (stock) phone but don't see any difference after reboot...

Google talk is using two columns (hardly works on phone screen) and chat history is not shown (just empty space for chat history, no text all at), not sure if it has to do with UI/DPI settings

Edit: text is not shown in Google talk, even for new messages.. the right column is just blank

I'm running the Jul 31 build.

What works:
Web browsing in Opera mini is like lightning
No jumbled text whatsoever
No reboots
Keyboard lag seems mostly gone
GPS does good enough, I never really had high expectations
Battery life seems reasonable

Issues:
SMS arriving hours late. My phone will not recieve any SMS in the stock app or any others until I reboot the phone. Then, I'll recieve hours worth of texts for the first time. Is anyone else having this issue? Would "Fix Permissions help"? I did it and it seemed to work for a while, and then the messages would get delayed again.

Also, I've had issues on this and the previous tester with SMS notifications occasionally not appearing from the stock messaging app, even though when I click on the app I can see the unopened message, there's nothing in the notification area. Because of this I now have a 3rd party messaging app that also pops up notifications. Not ideal, but now I never miss them. Sometimes only the 3rd party will show notifications and sometimes both will show. Anyone have any ideas?

Proximity sensor flashes screen while on phone as some have mentioned. Not really a big deal to me.

Also, my power button is pretty much dead so I use the "volume unlock" option. Is it a known bug that the volume rockers will not always unlock the phone consistently, perhaps it's a sleep thing?

Has anyone had any luck replacing the power button or are there any clever workarounds?

Bsydz, even if this rom never changed again I would be eternally grateful to you for your hard work on this rom, I can't even imagine my Triumph with Froyo anymore... Thank you so much!

I'm sure you did, but just making sure... you changed all the individual app DPI and interface settings as well, right? And another silly question, but you saved the changes for each app, and OK'd it to clear the memory when prompted? The individual app DPI settings don't autosave, and sometimes I forget to do that myself too.

You can always set the DPI manually as well. Lower numbers will conversely make things bigger. It's not font specific, though. If it's just a font size issue, perhaps going to Settings/System/Fonts may help (never messed with that setting myself, just see it there lol)?

Anyone has seeing the radio disconnect issue? My phone keeps losing network and it does not reconnect... I have to toggle airplane mode to force it to reconnect
btw I can't find the evdo/cdma 1x network preference?

I have had that 1x roaming issue, though it is far rarer than on any other rom I have used, since i have started with this rom I have seen it 3 time, and 2 of those it reconnected almost immediately

I've gotten the issue before (not yet on this latest build), but I think it was related to the Wifi Sleep of Death. I keep the radio set to "always on" and haven't gotten the issue recently.

Could also be a service issue... Sprint has been working on towers to increase 4G in various areas, which has been known to result in temporary loss of signal.

Everything is great except the icon grid and icon text size. Is this normal. I have played around with dpi settings and not getting what I want. Coming from MTDEV-CM7 build 2012-12-28 (2013-03-03 killed tethering).

For Mike and the others who have posted about their difficulties in changing the DPI settings, download and install the following .ZIP by flashing it in Recovery:

BSydz-PA-Stock-CM9-Mode-Changer.zip

This can also be found in the Original Post on this thread, but you have to know where to look. If you scroll down a few lines on the OP to where it says "Some tips that should help out a few people" and click the Show button, you will find the same .ZIP and a few words from BSydz about it.

Thanks for the quick reply, worked perfectly.

Cellular data speeds seem to be faster than MTDEV-CM7 build 2012-12-28, don't know if its a fluke or if this is reality.

No problem. I happened to be in the forum when you posted your question ;)

I don't know anything about data speeds being different. I came from CM7 myself and I haven't noticed any improvement in 3G speed.

To those who've been on this thread for a WHILE,
I've just downloaded the 1 gig game"Yesterday". I can get it to run for a while, but it eventually shuts. I've adjusted the CPU as high as 1.7 gigs, sometimes on Performance, others, on On Demand. Thankfully, it autosaves, but only in broad time periods. I'm wondering if what we used to call the "gaming kernel" would be a wise flash, and if so, which one was it? (I think I helped coin the name :-( ).
I'm running the 7/31 build. Otherwise, any suggestions? I've done some memory tweaking already, but any suggestion is welcome.
Again, my blessings, Bsydz.

I'm still running the april version of this rom and it's been really good aside from occasional text being glitchy...thats only happened about 9 total times all these months.

One thing recently that I found out, is that if I manually stop the facebook app so it isn't running in the background, my triumph is a lot more responsive all day and even has a much longer battery life.

There's an app I found recently called Force Stop Chain.

You can pick which apps you want force stopped so you don't have to do them manually.
I'm routinely stopping: Gallery, youtube & facebook now that way.

What's up guys? Been really busy and am still busy, but just wanted to say thanks for the feedback. I'll get back to this when I get some free time, it's just been crazy lately.

I finally got the no signal issue a few days ago, but it has only happened that one time. I'll also look into the proximity sensor.

If somebody could put together a list of the issues for the July 31st build other than camera and hdmi issues, that would help me to not have to look through the thread.

Question: Given that the Motorola Triumph already has the "search, menu, back and home" buttons below the screen, is there a way to turn off the "back, home and menu" buttons that are rendered on-screen by default?

Also, is using the standard Paranoid Android skin faster than 3rd party skins, or are there even faster options? Sometimes it seems laggy when it comes to menus loading. I'm not sure if that's due to my Themes Chooser, or PA itself.

Last but not least, is there any way to get Google Now on PA, or is there a 4.1 or later ROM other than PA available for the Triumph? I haven't been able to find a custom ROM for Triumph that has support for Google Now out of the box.

Thanks for all the help and keep up the great work!

To fix that, go to Settings>System>Navigation Bar and uncheck "Softkeys (onscreen buttons)".
