You can place them anywhere in you internal or external sd. What I do is create a folder on my internal sd named Icons and place all my icons there. Then you can long press on the icons you want to change and navigate to where you have the new icons saved.

How do u boot into recovery??

You click your heels three times and repeat the following phase "there's no place like home" no wait, no wait that's how to get home..

Use an app such as quick boot(free)/Rom manager(cost money) to reboot into recovery, or from the off setting power on while toggling up+down vol buttons, it'll go into factory recovery select yes and that should take you into custom recovery.

In the official recoveries that we have available (PG's and mine), only the external sd works not the internal. External is the safest place to make your backups in case your phone gets wiped or something goes wrong you wont lose your backups if on external.
