Root [ROM] Sleipnir v2.4.0.5 - 10/24/13 - VM & SPRINT

All these flashing issues with this rom are strabge to me as I didn't have any ehen I ran it. But its known no every device is the same. Good info though for those having issues.

I just had an idea. For all newcomers or ROM switchers - do JuiceDefender and Total Commander show up in your app drawer, or not, when you first flashed the ROM?

If I'm right, for whatever reason they might not be writing correctly and are screwing with the /data partition, causing these problems for you guys.

Additional Market apps as a optional install? :D

Juice defender, total commander, and adobe flash do come up in /data. For me, I had to wait (a while) for the market to update (your ROM is on 4.0.25, latest is 4.0.27). cfreeman's problem was he was restoring /data from a previous backup

The phone needs a decent file browser by default (stock came with one that was terrible), JuiceDefender should be on every device made, and flash is required for many websites' content still. For a while in the beginning I used to include more apps, and then nixed them entirely because yeah, I could have them as a separate download, lol. However, those apps are essential, so I've decided to leave them in. I do agree that most market apps should be kept as a separate download, however.

*phew*

Hi Artine . Ever thought about adding some sound enhancement so this phone can sound decent enough with headphone listening ? You know us Audiophiles need that sound quality . Anyways a good file explorer is a good idea to include in roms . I personally like Astro . Free and easy to use . Peace .

I like Astro as well, however Total Commander has been one of the highest rated, does accept plugins, and is highly customizable which is why it was included - choices. I'm considering replacing it though, Astro is one candidate for this. As for sound enhancement, it's a phone, and many media players other than the stock one have equalizers built in (Winamp, for example), and not everyone's ears or preferences are the same, so if I add in sound enhancement, it might not be what someone else enjoys, which would make adding it in a moot point. I have considered it, though, and may add it to a project in the future! :)

so i am running 2.4.0.2 on my optimus elite and i haven't had a lot of problems with it... especially since i uninstalled juice defender. i think it was the cause of a lot of my problems...

meanwhile...

i installed holo locker... which i love... but occasionally i still get the default locker. does anyone know how to fix this?

i've read a lot of ppl seem to have this problem so it would be nice to have a definitive fix here... perhaps in the next build we can replace the default locker with the holo locker since we're using the holo launcher anyway?

any input would be most helpful!

thanks!

Short answer: While it is a good idea; no.

Long answer: Holo Locker used to be included in earlier builds of Sleipnir, and even in

How the phone should have come out of the box - a barebones, all-essentials, necessary-back-end-improvements ROM, with a decent file browser (anything sans-Polaris), and great battery life.

So in short, your vision of the "perfect" stock rom

So in short, your vision of the "perfect" stock rom

Everyone's interpretation is different, so obviously yes, but it is known that the device an operating system is placed on, will run better without unnecessary applications, or bloat. Also, the vision/goal is more of a compilation of what many people wish to get out of their device to begin with, not simply an idea I came up with, lol. If everyone wanted a ROM full of bloat and slow, then this would be full of bloat and slow. Plus, a few years of customer service in electronics give you a fairly good idea of what people in general want from technology, and even all the way down to this very board :P Is it perfect? No. Will it work for everyone? Of course not. Will it work for a majority? Most people, and the numbers, seem to agree. I welcome criticism and can't delete posts, and I'm sure the mods wouldn't delete a criticizing post either, but the general consensus is positive and I've always welcomed suggestions and ways the ROM can be improved.

If for whatever reason the opinion changes, the ROM will change with it - or I'll come up with a new project. I also hold polls from time to time as well for Sleipnir. The general consensus seems to be that people don't want what they don't need, and don't want to jump through hoops to get rid of what isn't vital for the phone to operate (which is why I'm considering getting rid of Total Commander too, although stock came with a file browser [though crappy], which is why TC is still included), in addition to having their phone last as long as possible on a single charge. In fact, most of the apps I highly recommend aren't included - they have their own recommended section in the OP, and their usefulness is usually backed by excellent reviews from reputable groups (such as Android Police) or the Play Store, etc. Very little of Sleipnir comes from personal opinion, and is a community ROM by nature built and shaped by the majority opinions - and I'm fairly certain there isn't a single individual who has a great reason to want their phone to have a tweak that makes it perform worse, unless they're doing stability tests.

So... yeah. Short answer is "yes," long answer is "not really". And even Sleipnir in its current state is far from what I would consider the perfect stock ROM. The perfect stock ROM should also be completely bug free, have init.d support, and more to give the phone all functionality it can handle, with zero bloat, maximum battery life, and maximum performance. This phone still doesn't have all of that, even with CM. And it may never have that. Perfect is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm more than happy to admit that Sleipnir is by no means perfect, nor my vision of the perfect stock ROM. Perfect isn't achievable, but it's up to the community and those within it to find, make, or help design something close to it.

Lol at some of your answers. I understand 100 percent. I have about 20 years customer service, much of which is tech based so I know were you are coming from.

Essentially the idea is to have a rom full of why you want and nothing you don't. Pretty much the same as my ideas for my Linux distros, if I can get what I want/need out of the box without having to spend a bunch of time in the market all the better

Exactly! :D I'm the same way about all OSes too when I do development XD

i appreciate your modesty but the rom is awesome.

i'm not a techie guy... i'm not afraid to open up a terminal and edit some command lines or something and i can put together a desktop box from scratch... but that's about where it ends. i don't have the aptitude for the programming side and i'm always awed by those who do.

so what if there's a few bugs? that's the nature of technology. i'm primarily an apple guy... for over 30 years now... and those things are buggy as hell.

the fact that someone like me can read the instructions and the faq's and get the thing to work the 1st try? that's a testament to your skills not the limited ones i have.

beyond that... you're involved and always polite and friendly and who could ask for more than that.

in the end... as far as a consumable... all i know is it works, my phone is better for it.. i enjoy following the progress of the rom and i probably won't get a new phone until you do... because i'm excited to see what you come up with next...

a buddy of mine with the same phone was about to drop a bunch of $ on a galaxy or something and i convinced him to let me put the rom on there and tweak it a bit before he went and spent all that cash and that was 90 days ago and he loves the phone and unless he's lying i think he has no immediate plans to replace it.

so thanks again.

Thanks for this great work, I am new to Android stuff

Is it possible to install this ROM without root access to the device

also is there a way to install this ROM using adb

Thanks in advance

Installation of any rom or RW access to the system partition requires root/recovery.

Thanks starkraving for the quick reply

I have the unlock code (MSL) for my phone, is that going to help me for anything

Thanks

MSL isn't gonna help with anything besides putting the phone in DIAG mode and for programming things. Which I really doubt you'll ever need. xD Rooting and recovery is simplified so much for this phone. Just 3-4 simple app downloads from the FAQ-Guide and running them and then you're good to go to install a ROM but always be sure to backup first before installing!

I've ran every ZV5 based rom for this device as any good crack flasher would. This rom performs well and I haven't experienced any of the issues some folks are having...My personal method is to wipe and format between all flashes. Sure its a PIA but its better imo. I make a copy of my data/apps folder on my sd and manually restore apks and I NEVER restore data from recovery or TB. I've had and read about too many issues. I do this on all my phones even my Nexus and I flash nightlies lol. :D
