Root Rookie question

Hey guys,

I'm a huge noob when it comes to rooting (and smartphones in general), so bear with me.

My Evo 4G hasn't been able to receive texts. I can send them just fine, but nothing's come in for two days. A Sprint rep said that the outage was due to maintenance issues in the area that should be fixed later today, but then changed her story and said that she would reset the device details or something. She said I'd be able to get texts in 30 minutes.

30 minutes and several reboots later, still no texts.

anyway, tl;dr:

I want to try updating the PRL, but can't on Cyanogenmod 7. I figured I would flash a stock ROM, update the PRL, and then switch back. Can I flash different ROMs on without erasing all my data? If not, when I flash the stock rom, update the PRL and do a recovery, will my PRL settings stay intact?

What's the easiest way to update my PRL on Cyanogenmod 7?

If you don't think that's the reason I'm not getting texts, what else can I try?

Google has absolutely not been my friend and I'm hoping you all will help me out. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Have you tried flashing a different rom to see if the rom is reason your not getting texts?

Also it's very necessary to wipe all if you flash to a different rom. As far as changing to a stock rom to update prl then flash back to cm I don't believe it will stick.

If you want to stay on aosp, my advice for starters is to flash a different aosp rom and try out the texts.

Any cm based rom won't give you options to update profile/prl or check for software updates.

do a nandroid backup then wipe the phone install the stock rom update prl and then nandroid restore back to cm7 see if that works if not follow dragonslayers advice and try another AOSP ROM.

Radio's are held in a different partition of the phone so updating the prl will not change it back when you restore from a nandroid or change to another ROM

Thanks for all the help! The info really helped me better understand what's going on here.

I did as argedion said and backed up, then flashed a stock rom. The process seemed to have gone fine, but the initial boot is taking a really, really long time. It's almost been an hour. Should I keep waiting? Should I pull the battery?

EDIT: Oh no, it's just hanging at the htc Evo 4G screen. Did I just brick my phone??

What rom did you flash?
And did you wipe properly before the flash?
did you make a nandroid backup first?
