Root [ROOT] 2.3.6 Update

you need to use a custom recovery for this package. if stock worked then we wouldnt need to root :)

Shabby, isn't that what Odin is (or does)? I followed the steps for that too. I'm new to rooting but not new to being a techie and I don't wanna brick my phone....I just want more control over it.

qandres12, I was thinking the same thing! LOL!

odin is a major norse god and is the ruler of asgard.. oh you meant the program.. ;P

odin is a nice piece of software that was leaked from samsung/sprint that allows you to low level firmware flash with the corresponding program on the phone download mode (aka loki).

using it you can flash custom software provided it is in a format odin uses (tars that are formatted properly) and thus basically "inject" clockworkmod recovery onto your device :)

there is an open source implementation of odin called heimdall that is a bit less user friendly but works still just the same :)

I think I'm doing something wrong. I'm attempting to root my Admire, but when I try to update it through CWM, it keeps saying that the file isn't there. This is what comes up:

E:PATH: /data/update_sucess
E:update file is backed up: not updated
#MANUAL MODE#

--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip(No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

What is it that I am doing wrong? I copied the zip file to my phone and everything. I installed CWM and everything. What happened?

Good one Shabby. I'm a Thor fan but you caught me off guard with that one.

Ok so basically what I understand you to say is if we don't see these choices:

"Install zip from sdcard" and "Select zip from sdcard",

then the cmw installation is not correct and we should try it again.

The last step says:

"8. If your phone reboots, you have CWM installed and can boot into it by holding Volume Down and Back while turning on the phone. If the green bar with the timer doesn't move after about a minute, take your battery out and start over."

Ok. Ok. Ok. I did not see a green bar with a timer at all. I will try it again but I swear I followed the directions.

I'll keep you posted....

You are on the generic 2.3.6 but not the carrier specific 2.3.6. The updated one apprently has a better signal, extra space, a new lockscreen, better battery life and also a new incoming call look.
the extra space just means they clear out some of their shyt or optimized the apps. ;)

Ok I found the green bar with the timer on the Odin. My phone rebooted and went to its normal screen. I turned it off to boot into CWR but I still get the same menu that I posted above. Do I need to try to boot into CWR as soon as Odin reboots my phone? Meaning, is there a small window of time to boot into CWR?

I'm sure I'm doing all the steps right.

No you don't need to boot into cwm as soon as odin reboots your phone. You can just to see if it worked but you don't have to. What are your steps exactly?

KageBeast, Thanks for responding.

I've done all the steps for installing the CWR and the phone reboots itself.
I turn the phone back off.
I press the volume down button and back button.
A screen comes up with "Android Systems Recovery <3e>, Samsung Recovery Utils -for BML-"

There is a menu with for choices:

1) reboot system now
2) apply sdcard:update.zip
3) wipe data/factory reset
4) wipe cache partition
5) test redbend fota[FS]

E:PATH: /data/update_sucess
E:update file is backed up: not updated
#MANUAL MODE#

The only choice that even references the sd card is choice #2 and when I select it, this is the result I get:

--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip(No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

****
I do not see:

Install zip from sdcard
Select zip from sdcard

I have the .zip file on my sdcard.

I'm tempted to select "wipe data/factory reset" (or throw the phone out of the window!) ...but I'll wait for one of you to respond before I do that. :)

It seems to me that cwm installation didn't go through for 1. So you might wanna go back and redo the steps for installing it

LOL! I've done that at least three times today. I'll try it again. Thanks. I'll document the step by step for the CWM but it shouldn't be any different that the instructions given...

Steps:

1. Download http://goo.gl/3z64A (Odin) and http://k0nane.info/rom/indulge-drivers.exe (Drivers)
Check

2. Install the drivers. There's not much to it.
Check

3. Follow the steps to enter download mode at [ACS] THE ODIN THREAD: Return to stock OR in short:
a. Turn the phone all the way off, then remove and replace the battery and make sure the usb cable is unplugged.
Check

b. Plug the computer end of the cable into your computer.
Check

c. Hold down the Camera button, tightly. The Camera button is kinda flimsy.
Check

d. While still holding down the Camera button, plug the usb cable into your phone.
Check

e. Wait a few seconds. You should be at a screen warning you about how custom roms are dangerous to your warranty. You already know that, so hit Volume Up.
Check

4. On your computer, extract Odin and open it.
Check

5. Without touching any other options (don't do it, I'm not helping if you do,) click the OPS button and select the .ops file in the same folder as Odin.
Check

6. Click PDA and select the cwm tar I posted in this thread and just click OK when it warns about an "invalid image."
I assume this is the file named

Ah i see what you did wrong. You extracted the recovery.img file from the zip and use that as the pda. You aren't supposed to do that. you have to chose the actual zip file as the pda to flash

KageBeast! That was exactly RIGHT step I was missing!!! I am officially ROOTED!!!! I verified it with Root Checker and I saw a SuperUser permission come up before I was able to open Root Checker. I knew I was almost home but when I saw "Congratulations! This device has root access!", I knew I had joined the initiated!!!

Thanks a million! Now I gotta go through some other threads to figure out how to really use SU, Busybox, Tibu, and how to make this daggum thing a WiFi HotSpot!

Freedom is sooooooo sweet! :D

Thanks again KB for staying with me and thanks everyone for walking the path before me!

Haha no problem. But to simplify all of that you should just leave busybox and su alone. They just work themselves lol Tibu on the other hand it has a help thing in the app that you can just look at on how to use it. It's actually pretty simple. And do you plan on flashing any roms or staying on 2.3.6?

Yeah Busybox looks extra complicated. I like Tibu but I'm having trouble deleting the bloatware off my phone. Do I need to flash a rom like Monster to be able to get this junk off? I saw a guy on YouTube doing a Monster demo and it looked pretty cool.

2.3.6 is ok. I've had it for only a week but if there is something better please suggest it.

Also, I downloaded Wireless Tether to make the phone a hotspot and it works but MetroPCS has some kinda block on it that I need to bypass. I saw a thread on here but it looked complicated. It was also 2am in the morning (I couldn't sleep after the root! Way too excited!) so it probably is really easy to figure out.

You only need root access to delete bloatware. When you open up tibu just go to the backup/restore tab and choose "click to edit filters", and under filter by type uncheck user and uninst. so that only system apps show and click apply. From there just scroll down and choose which apps you want to uninstall.

And 2.3.6 is alright to me. I like the new lockscreen and and call screen but other than that it's nothing special to me. I'm running monster 5.3 which i think is much better. Though you can try monster, oa 2.3.12, lunar gen, or admired legends( haven't flashed this one but heard good things about it)

And i know nothing about tethering so i can't help you there lol

Ok I will try out Monster 5.3. Also, I tried those steps above and even after I unchecked user and uninst I was still unable to unistall. I get this message:

"Cannot remove system app
Failed to locate the apk file."

Any thoughts...

Yeah i had that problem too trying to remove bloatware. Just download root explorer if you dont already have it. Its a paid app but you can find it on the web for free and just use it to go to the /system/app folder and you can delete apps from there
