Root Feats?

gek00

Newbie
I just rooted my device recently but I dont know how to unlock some of its potential like "Setting CPU"

-How do I overclock/undervolt my CPU?

-Is there any feature that enables you to remove/disable the wakelocks on your device?
- I put my device on sleep last night and after 7 hrs of sleep it drained more than 20% of my battery..

I checked my battery usage and it had "Android OS" at 80%

Congratulations on rooting your phone!

You've been rooted for less than 24 hours and now you want to break it?

Slow down old son. You remind me of a kid at Christmas. :)

First and foremost, you will need to install some app's to monitor your phone properly. See post #2, under, "I'm rooted... now what?" and, "What app's should I install", here:-

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...t/482994-rooting-galaxy-s2-dummies-guide.html

It lists a number of app's that we modders use to get the best from our phones as well as things such as installing custom kernels and ROM's.

Bear in mind that you have only just installed your root and may be changing your kernel, modem and ROM and so you will need to decide on these things first before thinking about O/C'ing or U/V'ing, which is easier on a custom kernel, or worrying about wakelocks until you have spent time monitoring them and finding out what is causing them.

It might be your own operators, "bloatware", which, if you install a custom ROM, won't matter. It might be Samsung's own, "bloatware", which can be removed by following the, Bloatware removal" guide in the above post or may not be included in a custom ROM.

Now comes the boring bit for you... the reading and researching as you are not the first person to root a phone... honest!

There is no such thing as, "The Best Kernel" or, "The Best ROM" or, "The Best Modem", or, "The Best Over Clocking and Under Volting Settings". Each persons phone is different. Their usages. Their CPU's.

It's a case of trial and, more often than not, error, to achieve anywhere near a perfectly balanced phone that meets your needs.

My advise is not to rush at this like a bull in a china shop but rather, to use the Forum's Search feature and start reading about such things and how they will affect your phone. Will O/C'ing burn your CPU out quicker? Will U/V'ing give you S.O.D..

Sorry gek00, but there are no shortcuts... rooting is only the beginning! :)

Thanks for both inputs

@ironass your reply is very insightful and helpful, Im gonna read it now as I seem to have need to learn alot more really appreciate it

You are a gentleman and a scholar! :)

To be honest gek00, this forum is littered with posts from people who have just rooted and then tried to O/C and U/V and slap on kernels and ROM's without understanding what they are doing and then wondering why they have messed their phones up completely.

My first step, before anything else, would be to install Titanium Backup Pro and learn how to use it to backup and restore. Also, learn how to make a, "nandroid", backup, (mirror image of your phones entire system... app's, data, settings and all), as these are your, "Get out of jail cards", if things do go wrong with modding... and trust me... they do!

So I followed your guides and I have succesfully put a custom rom and the siyah kernel and I also followed the guide about 2nd core app, voltage control and lulzactive and it made a huge impact on my battery

But lets say I wanna make my phone a bit faster from those 3 apps (2nd core app, voltage control and lulzactive)what should I adjust to make it perform faster?

Thanks

The easiest and safest thing to do is use VC to bump the max frequency up to 1400MHz and see if you notice the difference. You can also change to one of the other available schedulers and/or governors and see if that feels 'better'.

I wouldn't advise messing with the lulzactive settings as they've been arrived at to give a balance between performance and economy. Leave 2nd Core set to the default "Dynamic hotplug" for the same reason.

Is it just my device or does lulzactive doesnt save its settings when on reboot even with the "Set on boot" checked?

I find it a bit annoying that whenever I turn off my phone or it drains out of battery I have to set lulzactive over again to the extent that I memorized the settings already..

Do you use Voltage Control?

If so, you have to save your Voltage Control settings as init.d for the lulzactive app to kick in.

See post #2, here:-

or here:-

IMHO, if you are using the Siyah kernel that is later than v2.6.2, then the use of the lulzactive app is dubious as to benefits since it has been heavily tweaked by the dev. See here:-
