Root Root newbie question

So I just switched from the Galaxy S Vibrant to the Droid X. I want the ability to use the Droid X as a wifi tether, as I was doing with the Vibrant, so I have read that I will need to root.

I am very new to all of this root, ROM, unlocked talk and am not quite sure exactly what I need to do. I found the following link How to: Root DROID X Running Official Android 2.2 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

Would this allow me to just access the area of the Settings that I need to enable the Mobile AP/wifi tether settings?

I guess I'm not even sure what rooting is or what it does. I am not interested in doing all kinds of customization to the phone itself, just access the wifi tethering options and having the official Froyo platform on the phone.

First off, Rooting a phone is basically gaining access to the system file and being able to modify them. The easiest way to root a droid x is to download the app Z4Root. you will have to download and save it to your SD card, then enable applications from unknown sources and install it manually, its not availabel on the market. Run Z4Root to obtain permanent root. when you do that, it will install an app called Superuser. once you do that, you will be able to run apps that require root access. Go to the market and download the app WiFi Tether for root users. thats the app that will get you free wifi tethering. Thats the quick and simple basics. After you are rooted there are a number of things you can do from there. read up in the sticky in the all-things-root section, there is a lot of info in there. good luck and happy rooting.

NO! NO! NO!

Root is easy nowadays. Just download z4root onto your phone and hit root.

Z4 is here: Download z4root 1.3.0 for Android Free - z4root will root your device and enable you to supply system level access to applications that request it. - Softpedia

Download it. Make sure under settings-application- you have unknown sources checked. Also, under the development tab, make sure USB debugging is checked.

Install z4.. after you install it, REBOOT!

After reboot, go into z4 and hit permanent root. Let it do its thing for 5 minutes or so and after you reboot, you're rooted.

Download wireless tether and follow directions. You now are able to wireless tether free.

Thanks everyone for the clarification. If I am understanding correctly, then rooting essentially makes the user of the phone the "administrator" (in PC talk) instead of Verizon being the administrator. So then I am able to manipulate any part of the phone instead of Verizon having a lock on what I can do.

So if I wanted to go on further down the road and add custom ROMS I could because I have the access to do so.

I'm a newbie when it comes to rooting. I ran across this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1mG7BIvkUo

Do I need to do the bootstrapping step that he shows? (not really sure exactly what that does.)

I want to run wireless tethering, but also would like to add a custom rom as well (I understand that Apex is the best, currently?)

Thanks for any and all help!

I have tried saving this to my desktop several times, but nothing shows up. I then tried saving it to a new folder on my desktop, still nothing. I thnk tried just opening it rather than saving it and again nothing opens... any ideas what I am doing wrong?

UPDATE: Nevermind, turned off Windows Security Essentials and it worked...

This didn't work for me.

I loaded the zipped file onto my SD card, debugging on and the unknown sources checked. When I go to the file in file manager on the phone and try to run superuser.apk I get the following: "Parse error - There is a problem parsing the package". This is the only apk file in the zipped folder.

Any other root program suggestions?
