Root Root/recovery Snag!, asking for help asap

I just bought a MT, and am trying to install the MIUI on it.
i have expirience rooting/roming the Optimus V but ive run into an issue

im using a macbook pro btw.

I installed Isaac87's recovery as per his instruction. Then i tried using Gingersnap to root the device which it said it was successful. now, When i plug the phone back into the mac the removable drive shows up as "CDROM" and wont let me acess the files of the phone, so i formatted the SD Card and nothing. same result

Also, the CWM Recovery doesn't exist anymore. So, at this point im unsure if im even rooted or was in the first place.... Thoughts?

You don't need to root in order to install CWM or a ROM.
There is a sticky with instructions up at the top of the page.

Okay so i dont need to root it whatsoever, even for Cm7 roms?. Im just trying to get the computer to recognize it as a phone instead of a CDROM at this point, im trying a factory reset now.

also when i click the drive on the computer it shows four files...

Autorun.inf
drive.ico
Phone_Fxxxxxxxx.xx usb driver
setup.exe

if that helps or makes any sense.

That would be the driver stuff for windows that opens up when you are on stock. It's like a sandisk flash drive that has the U3 launchpad. It's both a flash drive and a cd-rom. Your computer should detect your phone as a flash drive. Did you click the usb storage icon that appears in the notification bar on the MT when you plug it into a computer and select to turn usb storage mode on?

yes, ive even tried plugging it into a windows computer instead but it yeild the same result.

I think trying to use gingerbreak messed it up, i unrooted it using the utility, but its still showing as a CDROM, and i even have usb debugging mode on.

I think im going to try downloading clockwork mod using my sd card in the computer, then flashing the stock rom here on the site just to get back to square one before i try installing a custom rom.

It's supposed to show the cd-rom. And usb debugging shouldn't have an effect. Try running the setup.exe on a windows machine and see if it installs the drivers so it can mount.

Edit: also you want to go into download mode to install CWM anyways... (while off volume - and power)

I installed the driver on windows, and removable disk H shows up, but when i click on it, it just says"please insert disk"

Also i have clockwork installed, but i formated the sd, but im not sure if it disapeared cause i tried booting into it, and it opened the DL mode, but... maybe thats not how you enter Clockwork? the power and vol down. ill double checkl

Okay, ill try that. the mac wouldnt run any of the files, but im instaling it on the windows atm

Yea and hopefully it will mount. I've haven't used macs much, but from my understanding they shouldn't even need drivers (and .exe won't run because they are windows executable files.) so I don't know why it won't work on a mac, but try the windows machine.

to enter recovery it's volume -, volume +, and power. For download it's just volume - and power. You should replace the recovery image in there with the CWM recovery image. (make sure to rename the current one something else so you have the stock recovery image backed up.)

I tried booting into CMW with volup + voldwn+ power and it just booted the phone normally. before i did the stupid gingersnap utility, it showed up as "Phone" on the mac no problem. i even installed CMW by putting th enew recovery image in the right directory and had actually booted into CMW but i forgot to transfer the rom file.

idk im afraid im screwed unless someone has noticed this before.

Sorry guys, im ******ed... hahahah I seriously forgot to click the "turn on usb storage" part of the process.... omg haha i feel really dumb atm. i still have to figure out how to get CWM working again though. will update. thanks

Well I know lots of people have had problems getting all the drivers and getting their computers to recognize it. And your mac showed "phone" so that would mean that was when you were in download mode right?

Make sure you are pressing both volume buttons and holding them before hitting the power button. I find that helps when booting into recovery.

You have to pull the battery out for a minute or two sometimes, otherwise the normal way to boot into recovery mode always just boots normally.

That would make sense, because i dont think i actually plugged the phone into the mac at all before i had the phone in download mode. Im going to try taking the battery out and trying to get back into recovery mode, but i might have to try and reload CWM, if anything ill put it in downloading mode and just verify that the file still exists.

First-wipe all user data. Second plug phone into computer, hold volume up [ONLY] and press power while while holding that, this will put you into boot mode so you can install CWM. Power off after installing and unplug from computer. Now you can download the version of CM7 or CM7-MIUI you want. Turn phone off wait 1 minute then, holding both volume keys press and hold power, keep holding and count to 10 after it boots, you should now be in CMR! Flash your zip at this point. Volume down. Volume up does nothing

easiest way to get into download mode is like this.

1. turn phone completely and 100% off.

2. Hold Volume DOWN

3. insert usb cord, with the other end plugged into PC.

it should go instantly into download mode and PC will recognize as flash storage named "MOBILE" this is the drive where you place the recovery.

you have to go in the folder called "image" find the stock recovery, named "recovery.img" RENAME it to anything else, probably "oldrecovery.img" and then drag the CWM recovery into this folder, and name it "recovery.img"

the phone is looking for ANY file named "recovery.img" when it boots so the name and the way its spelled is VERY VERY important. if you dont do it right youll have to start over.

also, make sure windows or your other PC OS is set to show file extensions. we have too many problems from people naming it "recovery.img.img" becuase windows hid the original file extension from the user, so they typed it and it became part of the file name and the phone cannot boot into it.
