Root Root Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G?

indeed i dont need an indulge, thanks anyways tho :)

anyways i havent forgot about you, ive tested a few things in teh irc but nothing solid as of yet :/

you probably wont hear much from me this weekend tbh, as i am on sprint i am using my upgrade... trading my epic 4g touch in for a ball and chain ;)

Anyone want a VM optimus? Its whay I upgraded from when I got the attain. Its rooted and overclocked. I have no use for it anymore but I will miss it. Its a great little phone. Better than the triumph in my eyes

I almost read that as you are upgrading to an iPhone lol. (I hope not  ) though ball and chain would be an apt analogy :D

Any clue what you are gonna get?

I wouldn't mind an R915 to mess with (I have an R910), but I don't think Shabby has any need for any Indulges. And neither model will help you Attain users at all.

K0nane, I believe I can get you the cricket indulge (r915) for nothing. A buddy at work had one, a couple of weeks ago it started to give him a hard time charging, I believe a short in the mini USB slot from him yanking the plug out like a barbarian. It will still charge, the plug has to be propped up in a way that it has to be forced at a slightly angled elevation.

Other than that its perfect. Good at least for screwing around with. He upgraded a couple days ago so ill see if he has it still tomorrow (I'd imagine he does). Ill give you a shout out tomorrow.

lol yea, getting married :P just kididng about upgrading, shes got teh photon and i have the e4gt

Oh wow. Yeah, I guess I should have caught on to that lol. I think I read something about you getting married over on your twitter earlier this month. Congrats bud.

Must say from a married man to one soon to be.. though I'm sure you've heard it.. it's not too late for you, there's still time to run! :D

Well good thing i have checked the forums before I got the phone. Hopefully the new link will be up by the time i get the phone. I been reading this whole forum at least twice and is excited for all the work the devs put it. Congrats guys for the hard work.

If and when there is a root method available for you people, it will be posted HERE on AndroidForums. DO NOT come to IRC and start bugging us - especially Shabbypenguin - about it. No ETAs means ABSOLUTELY NO ETAs. No "rough guesses". No "maybe just an idea when". NOTHING. If you don't know what ETA means, Google it. Don't ask.

Thank you.

I've got a bricked Samsung Attain sch-r920 from metropcs if anyone has compiled the kernel... I've been attempting to learn how to develop the kernel myself with the open source file, but I'm a noob to cygwin and arm-gnueabi architecture. And yes, I know how ******ed I am for flashing without backing up, and blah...

So, I have odin and cygwin and sourcery codebench lite for the toolchain, arm-none-linux-gnueabi and sparce... although I can't figure out how to use sparce other than having it installed as the source code checker...

I've been trying to figure it out. Any developers out there? Can anyone make a basic kernel for the Samsung Galaxy Attain? Or, like Gypsybikes, give me instructions? Or tell me what variables I should set, other than cygpath, and export cross-config to the directory of the toolchain...

I would love to have a working phone again... OEM Tarballz anyone?

The only real way to make the kernel is to use Linux. I also have the source but it only makes a simple recovery, insufficient, with the basic make commands. I'm trying to work with Shabby to make a kernel that will have root. I was able to make some for the e4gt and I'm trying to bring that experience here. If I make any real progress I'll post again. Until then, any information, such as dumps, .pit output for partition info would be good too. Thanks.

somehow i dont think youll be so quick as to forget me next time eh? ;P

Haha. Nothing but good things to say shabby. You made this happen. Sure you might have had others like bliss involved but without you it might not have happened. Certainly not this fast at any rate.

#1 spot on my speed dial lol.

I'm a bit confused. I have a Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G (MetroPCS). And, I would LOVE to be able to root this phone.

From my own (unsuccessful) attempts (z4root, etc.), and from what I am reading here and elsewhere, I am concluding that rooting this specific model is NOT possible (yet).

But, I am also reading (here) that a root IS possible, and is currently being worked on/created, by one/several of the members of this forum.

But, here is my confusion: it seems from what I've read that the fix is there, but right now it's a "manual" drawn-out process; and people are now waiting for an easier automatic (one-step/click) process? And this is dependant upon something with/about the kernel?

Is this correct? Or, am I confused, and there is NO fix just yet (manual or otherwise), and THAT is why we are awaiting for this kernel investigation?

Obviously, I would prefer an automatic (one-step/click) process, and would gladly welcome and appreciate. On the other hand, my impatience would make me consider the manual process (if one such exists).

Could someone please clarify for me (and others), and I thank-you in advance for your patience, understanding, and efforts.

The manual process isn't a long one. A lot of people just want to be able to do a 1 click process because it is faster or simpler or just that they dont want to screw up. But if you follow the directions that Shabbypenguin wrote, it literally too me 10 minutes (not including download time since I have slow internet). I'm pretty sure that if I can do it. ALMOST ANYONE CAN. But make sure you follow the directions carefully.

for anyone really interested in helping please join IRC so we can get a kernel going for this device. I already have a framework but I am missing some recovery files and I need a good dd. The one Shabby gave me is corrupt.

webchat for the Attain4G NEW LINK!

I'll be on and off all day so hang out if you can. I could have this done today if we get it together and some people are brave enough to test. I know kernel testing is scary but someone has to go to bat right?

If anyone is interested in some kernel testing to get cwm going on the Attain jump on irc. webchat.irondust.net #hitsquad or something like that. I have a kernel ready to test and need some testers.

I can't jump on irc but if you want to host it somewhere I will test for you.

Shabby asked me to help with this kernel. I made a first one with all stock, then made a few changes to default.prop to make adb/insecure. After looking at the files I saw that there were some lines missing from init.rc to create a partition and permissions, so I added them. This should boot. If not let me know ASAP so I can pull the link. IDK if I can start a thread yet because I'm new to AF, but I will figure it out if we need a kernel thread. Once we have stock kernel booting I will work on cwmr, bless Koush!

HAVE A STOCK KERNEL ON HAND TO FLASH BACK!!!!!
