Root Root Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G?

Shabby asked me to help with this kernel. I made a first one with all stock, then made a few changes to default.prop to make adb/insecure. After looking at the files I saw that there were some lines missing from init.rc to create a partition and permissions, so I added them. This should boot. If not let me know ASAP so I can pull the link. IDK if I can start a thread yet because I'm new to AF, but I will figure it out if we need a kernel thread. Once we have stock kernel booting I will work on cwmr, bless Koush!

HAVE A STOCK KERNEL ON HAND TO FLASH BACK!!!!!

Where is the link to your kernel?

I removed it because the kernel did not work. There has been a tiny bit of progress tho...maybe another kernel today. IRC is the way to go if you want to get things done...

you can try this if you want SCH-R920-0.0.5 trial kernel

I understand, I don't usually have time for irc though, and only test things made available to me by other means. Mainly dropbox. Ill try to drop by the irc this weekend, I should finally have a little down time. :D

That'll be great. the more testers we have the faster things can go, especially if those testers have ADB installed...hint hint.

Lol, yes of course, I have adb :p

Ok, I built the ROM from Android-2.3.7_r1 also if you really want to get crazy with some testing...If I get the recovery/kernel fixed I might just tweak the rom some. IDK yet, it really just depends on testers with ADB...I kid. I'll be working on the kernel a bit later also so stay on the lookout for links... Google+ is a good place to dev chat also. I think my G+ is in my details or just add me at jkirk777@gmail.com.

If you ODIN this kernel you are risking life and limb. Make sure you do not have "REPARTITION" checked. If it fails on boot at Samsung splash try ADB. Also try to boot into recovery and do the same. Without some debugging information I can't make much progress on this. If you get a logcat or can get shell a dmesg would be sweet. Pastebin the result and link to it in the thread. Thanks. I'm not keeping my IRC on so I can get some other things done, but will get on if you want...Cheers and good luck.

After yet another week of trying to kang together a kernel that will boot, with extensive help from pandibear I have only succeeded in making a couple more of the 19 modules required, so I think I'm making 12 now. It's gonna take ALL of them being made at the same time to create a booting kernel before I can even get to the recovery. TBH I probably won't be able to do it without a device to test nonstop until it's done. The problem is this device uses Froyo AND GB drivers/partitions/devices and Samsung DID not release working code. You can whine at them if you want or pool together to get me a phone. I'm gonna keep working on it until I have a new project (I have an EVO4g and GalaxyTab 7" to play with) so I might get it fixed before the end of the year. xInterlopeRx out.

I get my student refund in 2 weeks. Ill put some of it to good use. If anyone else is willing to add to the pool that would be great.. so I don't have to foot the whole 200 dollars.. but ill do it if I have too.

that would be insanely awesome, poor interloper has been smashing his head against the wall trying to get everything working with pandibear as his tester...

Question, i have a metropcs attain that i purchased. i was able to get it activated on a regular $40 line(non smartphone line). how can i get it to work with the 3g internet? i have qpst and cdma workshop but i dont know the right settings in qpst in order for the mms and internet to work.
i have not rooted the phone nor attempted to. its running prl 3024 firmware ver 2.3.6 kernel 2.6.35.7
thanks in advance.

btw update, while waiting for someone to reply to this post i decided to try the odin root from
http ://androidforums.com/attain-4g-all-things-root/525708-root-flashable-odin-tar.html
looks like i somehow bricked it? maybe?
i ran the root and after doing wht it does, it rebooted and has yet to come back up :(.
not sure what the next steps are(if there are any). let me know if i should now use this as a nice paperweight.

Honestly, and no offense, it drives me crazy seeing that people are still repartitioning. Reading the whole thread would have given you ample warning on repartition. In any case, lesson learned right.

Amen brother.. no better way to put it. I think most of us have reminded people not to repartition. Alas, it just keeps happening.

Alright, I'm kinda overwhelmed at the response to get the device. I cannot help financially however. I can use a bad esn device to save money. Here is a test kernel I repacked using a modifies version of the repacking tool from xialoux (I probably hacked that name). I changed the script to use the proper mach for the Attain instead of a generic device. Please leave feedback and ANY logcat if you get one. If you can get shell access please get get a dmesg or kmesg. If you don't know how to do these things join the IRC and I will help you.

Be sure "repartition" is NOT checked when you use ODIN. Have the stock kernel on hand to flash back if necessary.
