welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

go to settings>about phone>software and report back what you see. while you are on there select more and report that as well.

also go to your bootloader and report back what you see on the screen. power off, you may need to uncheck fastboot (settings>apps>uncheck fastboot), then press and hold power+vol down.

also once you get the info from the bootloader, then select recovery and at the bottom of the recovery menu, it should say what recovery you have.

So it looks like youre stock rooted and have clockworkmod recovery.

It looks to me like you have everything up to date as well.

So what does the root actually do. I know ur able to run different recoverys, but what is the benefit to that? So is there anything I can do to get a little more out of my EVO ? Idk just figured id ask

having root access allows you to change the phone entirely on how you want it. this means that you can flash custom roms and themes to your hearts desire. we now have ICS (ice cream sandwich which will never come to the og evo officially from sprint) among other slew of cool roms. you can get better battery life and performance. you can partition your sd card and move the apps to the sd card. (i have 150 apps with 200mb still left on my phone!!!!). you can get free wifi tether. and more.

here is a great thread that has many links on info on root:

read this guide:

scroll down to the second post for more info on life after root.

Root gives you complete control of your device. It's not needed but I will never own another phone that I can't root.

You can get free WiFi tethering, flash any version of android you want, download custom roms and kernels for better battery life and performance, ect ect ect

It's the ability to unchain the phone from sprints shackles :D

So what do u recommend someone to do if they want that better battery life & performance? And is the ICS available for the EVO ? And one more question do u have to have a computer to do this? Sorry for so many Q's. I'm just kinda new to the root side of androids

first of all this is a forum (the best one on the net,AF rules!!!!) and it is designed for questions and discussions. so please feel free to ask as many questions as you like. and dont feel sorry.

1.really the best way to get better battery and performance out of your phone, you will need to get a custom kernel and setcpu(found in the google play).

here is a guide on kernels:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html

and on setcpu:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html

2.yes ICS is available. i would go to xda:EVO 4G Android Development - xda-developers. just look for anything that has ICS or cm9 in the name.

but this is a very nice one:
[ROM] Deck's ReLoaded | LOTK | Team DIRT | Feature requests open | 7-4-12 - xda-developers

3.no you do not need a computer. you just need the files on the sd card. you can even download the files directly from your phone if you like. everything is done in recovery on your phone.

any more questions please fire away.

Just chiming in here.
I would read as much as you can. The links that ocn provided are very informative. As far as battery life/performance etc., there are many roms out there...I personally ran MikG v3.11 and now Decks Reloaded.
Both are amazing and imho, Decks Reloaded is better than MikG...
Different phones react differently, especially with kernels. Most, if not all custom roms come with kernels, but you can flash kernels independently of roms.
There are ICS based roms out there also, but I am not a big fan of ICS so I dont bother flashing them. (I may be one of the few who does not give a hoot about ICS:p)
I also saw that you are on Clockwork recovery, the consensus here is to change that to Amon Ra recovery....much better at wiping before flashes.
As ocn said, post back as to what your bootloader screen said also.
We can answer questions if needed, don't hesitate.
Better safe than sorry when it comes to flashing stuff.
Welcome to the rooted world!!:D

Ok what is the best sense based kernel ? So once I download the decks reloaded Rom what do I do then ?

ok so deck's is an aosp(android open source project) rom which means that it is pure android with no htc sense added to it. so a sense based kernel will not work. you will want an aosp kernel.

you can get most kernels here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

can someone chime in on ICS kernels. i'm not sure if aosp kernels will work on ICS roms.

For sense, (my opinion, of course) is MikG v3.11

MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]

For aosp, it's Decks Reloaded....click "show" button in my op for link...it's in my signature.

There are instructions on how to install in both of those links and also instructions in the links ocn provided.
I usually wipe 3 times myself using the recovery Amon Ra or the one in my sig.
Depending on if you are s-on or s-off, (found on the hboot screen) there will be different ways to install a new recovery.....
If you have ANY questions, again, feel free to ask....flash something incorrectly and it will have adverse effects, so ask away my friend:)

Ok nevermind that last post I found ur link on which kernel and recovery to use with decks . Just can't find instructions for what to do first ?

So I have read about all day and still don't really think I understand it completely. Do I need a different recovery? And do I have to make nandroids before I flash ? I dont think I'm gonna tackle this just yet. I'm gonna do somemore reading and understand it first . Can I mess my phone up be on fixing?

no if you have amon ra2.3 as your recovery you are good to go.

it is recommended that you make nandroid backups. it is just a fail safe in case something goes wrong or if you do not like a particular rom or kernel and want to go back.

it is really hard to brick your phone. the only way that is a given is if you flash a different radio and then pull the battery out. that will surely brick your phone.

Well as of right now I have Clockworkmod will that work or not? So I'm downloading decks reloaded right now. Does it come with a kernel ? If not which do I do first, Rom or kernel? And is it a must to download the be superwipe ?

If your on AOSP you want to run the mason kernel. G series for gingerbread I for ics.

The option to install it will come up when you install the Rom you don't have to worry about downloading the kernel

Well I downloaded the recovery and followed instructions but didn't do anything ? Does anyone have any suggestions?
did you get the recovery from the link ocn provided?
And how did you install it? Thru pc36img, adb or android flasher method?
Are you s-on or s-off.
