Root Rooted EVO Owners

Just a few quick questions for you,

1. Have you noticed any performance decreases after rooting? *No overclocking*

2. If you are running any specific ROMs Sense 2+, how is the performance?

3. Is your battery life more significant before/after rooting? And if so what ROM, (if any other than stock) are you running?

Thanks :D

1. no actually the opposite.

2. At the moment I'm running Fearme

3. Rooting has no affect on battery life. And while Both Kernel and Rom have some affect on the Battery so does you signal, Apps you run, Apps that run in background, and other variances. You can achieve better battery after rooting

1. I underclock my phone and its smooth as butter

2.Prime XL 3D sense 3.5 it is imho the best 3.5 on the evo4g

3. My battery life has increased a lot due to the knowledge I have now that I didn't know before I rooted

1.no decrease in performance. actually most roms now are more optimized to be lighter and faster then stock. aosp roms are the smallest in size and they are extremely fast and has the best battery life(with the right kernel) compared to sense roms.

2.running mik3d

3.and i was getting 18-30 hours of heavy to moderate use. (i say was as i now have switched to the evo 3d, but i still have my og evo that i still play with)

Let me get this straight, you're running a Sense 3.5 ROM, while underclocked, and you have better battery than before while still maintaining a "smooth as butter" experience? How is the achieved?

Underclocked at 729600 on conservative governor with v6 option 9 with chopsuey kernel

Ember if you are considering Rooting first let me congratulate you on being sensible enough to ask questions about performance. However do understand that YRMV. No two EVO's are alike. You can have the exact same setup as I do and get worse battery than I do or even better battery than I do.

I would encourage you to Read the Rooting for Dummies Guide in my Sig a few times to get familiar with certain concepts and ask questions for those things that may not seem that clear. The only dumb question is one that is never asked.

Root = Epic Awesomeness!!

Way better performance. No lag, everything that I use works.

Supersonic3D RC1.2 Rom, sense 3.5

I'm getting about 20 to 30 hours depending on useage, signal strength, etc. I'm using a custom kernel - more freedom - V6 supercharger.

I've been rooted for a while now and messing with this thing constantly. I've pretty much fine tuned my setup over time. Takes a little while.

Ask questions read all you can. We're here to help. :)

I've never really liked AOSP, looked rather unappealing, I could handle Cyanogen for a few days on a nice theme but Sense always looked the best for me, I'm just looking for the best setup I guess, I want Sense 3.5, but I don't want to flash a billion different things and still not find the perfect Sense 3.5 setup, any help here?

Probably MikG will be your best bet its the most stable I belive. Personally Dont use it but a lot of people around here swear by it.

Let me kake a suggestion if I may.
I would first concentrate on rooting your phone. Read up, ask us questions if you get stuck, ROOT THAT SUCKA!!!
Get comfortable with your recovery, making nandroids, wiping partitions ETC.
As suggested above I would download the latest MikG and flash that first. It's sense 2.1 + 3.0 and its rock solid, everything works, its a great rom.
Get that working great and make a nandroid of that setup.
Then once you have a good working rom, start working through the kernels for Sense Gingerbread. They're listed in the roms and kernels sticky at the top of the forum. ;) You really have to experiment with kernels because your phone may hate the more freedom, but mine loves it. No two phones will handle a custom kernel the same way.
Get a kernel working good, then make a new nandroid of that setup. We call this rom your "dailly". It's your base of operations, so if something goes awry whilst your tinkering, you have a rock solid backup to restore.

This of course is just my .02, you're free to do what you want. If you want to jump straight to 3.5, I would try out Supersonic3D RC1.2. I run this as my daily, its solid.

Just continue to ask questions, we're here to help! :D
+10!

Also, those roms he listed were pretty good. Definitely want to get comfortable with the recovery. (amon ra makes me smile). And nandroids are like gold bars, the more the merrier! (but don't forget more money, more problems (ie: don't need too many nandroids on your sd card :) )).

Couple screenies of my setup and battery performance:

I think I'm gonna take the plunge sometime soon and try one of those sense 3.5 roms. FINALLY! lol. Only been reading about em for months! I'll just have to watch my apps (as I only have the sdcard the phone came with (too low of a class for a2sd from what I've heard)).

I'm on class 2 and running it just fine

I am using a Wally world special and all my apparently run just fine

that is not really underclocking. if you go down to like 245 or even 128 then you are underclocking. if you go down further you might get better battery life.
I think he means that's what his max is set at. I almost always dial my max processor speed down to 768 and it seems just as snappy as leaving it at the regular 998 max. I have messed with overclocking some, but it just doesn't seem to add a whole lot of benefit for what I use my phone for.

And to address the OP:

1. Definitely no performance decreases. Only increases.

2. MikG is a Sense 2.1 rom with some Sense 3.0 features also added in, and it is amazing. But there are many great roms to choose from. The only 3.5 rom I tried was the MikSupersonic rom and it was great, but I like to have 4G as an option so I reverted back to MikG/CM7 which have everything working.

3. Your kernel choice is going to drive your battery life moreso than a rom. And with the Sense roms, the custom kernels help over stock, but I'm not usually blown away by any of them. Running AOSP roms with Tiamat 3.3.7 seems to yield significantly battery for me. But kernels are a weird thing and they react differently from phone to phone, so if something works great for me, it might not work very well at all for you, so you just need to try everything and see what works best for your setup.
