Root Rooted my ally 2.2.1 with SuperOneClick, what now?

I just got my 2.2.1 Ally rooted using SuperOneClick. seems to have worked good, I now have the superuser app available and already removed a little bloatware with the free version of the titanium backup app.

I'm still new to this but now I'm interested in custom roms. I was looking at A Froyo Rom 2.2.1 and it says I must be using 2.2.1 and have a custom recovery rom. How do I go about doing this? i found some threads about a program used to make a custom recovery rom but it was for earlier firmwares, is it any different with the 2.2.1??

also, what else should I look into doing with my ally? Again, i'm new to this so any opinions would be appretiated! thanks.

You can use rom manager to flash ALTERNATE recovery. Would be amonra recovery, seen lots of talk about issues with clockwork. I also know that some have had issue getting it to stick. If you search i bet you could find the solution. also if you are going to install a custom ROM i wouldnt advise A Froyo ROM. Not that there is anything wrong with it. It just wasnt made to be a long term thing as savoxis' attention has been on velocity 1, i would say to go with velocity or one of the byron roms.

i would go with Velocity 1.0 as your custom ROM. Easiest way i have seen to get an alternate recovery would be to install ROM manager, and flash Clockwork Mod. THEN immediately flash alternate recovery. NEVER stay with Clockwork. AmonRA is far superior IMHO. But anyway, glad you are able to join us rooted Ally owners. That way, you will still have your fastboot bootloader...
But if you decide to stay with SuperOneClick... just don't do anything TOO crazy.

I tried that way but after selecting the .cab file in the command prompt the lg program opens to do the flash and after it checks battery life, etc it gets a communication error and tells me to remove the battery and restart the phone. I have all the usb drivers installed but it never sucessfully finishes.
 
You're fine with Super One Click. I did the same exact thing, flashed Amon Ra recovery, and then flashed Velocity 1.0 :) No problems what so ever :D

Sigh.....
Agiain if you have Fastboot before you take the OTA.... you will have fastboot after the OTA for Froyo.

The only people that dont are people that got phones after V6.
They are the only ones that "Need" to do the above method.

Besides Most users will never need fastboot to begin with.
I am just saying....... agian.

Its not some emergency thing.
I have had the same Ally since the begining. I have never had an issue i couldnt get out of. And I have pulled some stupids. Never Needed fastboot.
Dont get me wrong. Fast boot is awesome and if you are one of those that really knows how to push the red button.... well maybe you should consider getting Fastboot on your phone if you in fact do not already have it on there.

Could you please elaborate on exactly what steps SuperOneClick does to root a Android device the "WRONG" way, and how exactly the guide achieve root the "RIGHT" way? I just think everyone needs to know WHY one way is "WRONG" and the other is "RIGHT" so they can make a INFORMED decision. Thanks!
 
Well it turns out I DO still have fastboot. I happen to be stuck in it now :mad:

I used rom manager i was told and I flashed a clockwork recovery and then an alternate recovery then selected to reboot into recovery mode. now im in the fastboot mode and really don't know what to do. I reading up on it now, but my guess is I will need to use the ADB program at the command prompt now to move a new rom in?

If you get the blue fastboot screen pull the battery and flash alternate recovery RA_GNM Recovery 1.2.5. with ROM Manager (don't use clockwork). You may have to flash it more than once for it to stick. power back off and press the send+menu+end keys and you should end up in RA-aloha's recovery screen. If you get the blue fastboot screen pull the battery and flash alternate recovery with ROM Manager again. As I said, you might have to do this several times to get RA_GNM to stick.

Im pretty sure i had seens posts on how to delete stock recovery through adb.
 
cool thanks! that got me into recovery mode,i wiped the userdata and installed velocity.. Everything is good now, Im liking the new rom! definatley alot smoother running now!
 
Well this velocity rom is badass! So much faster and no bloatware to remove. love the colors and style of the rom.

I reinstalled all my apps and data with titanium backup. the only thing i didnt get back is my contacts. I got my call log back and when i first looked at it it showed the names of the contacts but then a second later it changed to only showing the numbers, not the contact names. I was told my gmail and google account would sync my contacts back to my phone but I had to set up a new gmail account because I lost the info to the original account.

any other way to get the contacts back? seems like the contact info is there somewhere because it actually showed the numbers on my call log as contact names for a second the first time I looked at the call log after restoring the backup.
 
Usually your contacts are synced with your Google account. Make sure you are signed in.

I lost my login info for my google account, so I had to create a new one. But now I got the password reset on the old one but can't figure out how to change the password for it in my phone. just keeps saying error syncing because its still set to my old password..
 
got it now. Ended up just exporting my contacts from my old account and imported them into the new one, then reset my phone to sync from the new one. Now I have my contacts bad and couldn't be happier!
 
Only problem I have had so far is my gps isn't working. I tried a couple different programs that use it and the gps icon blinks on the upper bar and whatever program I'm using just sits at "waiting for gps signal" and never gets any signal.. any ideas?

Indoors can block GPS, have you tried outside?
 
yeah I was outside, it wasn't working all day yesterday but today its working perfectly fine.. Might of been a problem with my service provider or somethin but it works good now!
 
You can try Frunisher and probably (Byron scene has been very quiet) the Byron ROMs for more of a stock feel. Also A Froyo ROM for stock + themes. But for Byron and A Froyo ROM, i cannot speak on whether the DL links are still up but i do know development on A Froyo ROM has ended, probably Byron as well.
