Root Rooted phone hacked?

Hello! I wanted to know if it was possible for my phone to be hacked into by someone else if it were to be rooted. I read on Phonearena: "Hacker exposes the dangers of jailbreaking..." The article is about an iPhone (Jailbreak) that was hacked into and the hacker was able to do anything to his phone. Would this also be possible for a rooted Android phone to be hacked into the same similar way as the iPhone in the article.

I have never heard of a phone being hacked because of rooting. I'm sure it's possible. Just be careful of what apps you download and what custom roms you install. Then you should be just fine. :D

Jailbreaking...............Iphone................

Yes it's possible, but there are easier ways to gain access to your phone & steal data or mess with it, through regular apps on the market even. Most people don't even think twice about granting permissions when installing new apps.

It's possible, but exactly like Whyzor said. It is much easier to get someone to download a some app and grant it permissions to stuff it doesn't need. They can then get info from there. You are usually safe on the legit markets, but even on those there have been bad apps. You need to be vigilant about what the apps you put on your phone are doing.

Here is a post that can help you understand apps/permissions/etc: http://androidforums.com/android-applications/36936-android-permissions-explained-security-tips-avoiding-malware.html

The particular exploit your talking about used a program that along with granting root reset the phones that used it to to the apple factory root password of "alpine". I believe it also opened up an SSH session and left it open.here is an article about it:
How to Secure your Jailbroken iPhone from SSH Hack | Redmond Pie
here's an article that discusses how Gingerbreak works.Gingerbreak exploit can root Android 2.2, 2.3 phones | Jailbreak Android Devices – How to Jailbreak / Root any Android Phones & Tablets. How to Unlock Android
you need physical access to run it so unlike the old iPhone jailbreak the danger is much lower. and unlike apple android has so many diffrent vendors an exploit like the iphone ssh hack can't get much traction.
hope this helps your fears.:)

I will say (beyond what I posted above) that the chances that someone with the knowledge/tools to hack your phone would pick you is so astronomically high, that it is safe to say that it won't happen. Theoretically, it could, but I really doubt it. They also could not do it like was mentioned in relation to the iPhone stuff as that is a completely different OS.

The permissions stuff mentioned above is a lot more likely.

No it was a valid problem but apple really does not want you messing with their secret sauce so instead of educating its users it said "told ya' so"

It is possible that your data can be compromised whether you root your phone or not.
The best advice is what has already between stated here... Download only from verified reputable sites, and check carefully the permissions requested by ANY app you install.

The gingerbreak exploit that is commonly used by users to gain root access, can also be used by malware on your unrooted phone.

For more info on that, just google "gingermaster".
