Root Rooted, S-Off, help with updates from stock shipped

I caved and bought the LTE when it came out, but decided not to activate it until LTE was available to my area since I had a EVO3D with 4G that worked fine. Well, LTE is in my area, and I am now ready to activate, but have a few issues and questions that I hope someone can help me with(links or other).

Some information first.

I am running the shipped stock rom with no OTA updates, I rooted and obtained s-off with lazy panda.

-hardware version 0003
-software version 1.13.651.1 710RD
-android 4.0.3 /sense 4.0
-pri 2.28_003
-prl 25002
-baseband 1.02.12.0427

-hboot 1.12.1111
-radio-1.02.12.0427

TWRP touchscreen recovery 2.4.1.0(I heard this can be broken with an update?)

1. My main concern isn't with LTE coverage, it is with the updates to Jelly Bean. What do I lose or gain with Jelly Bean?

2. I read that PDAnet and wifi tethering may not work. I would like to keep PDAnet working if possible.

3. The aggressive multitasking memory-clearing is the biggest issue to me. There are times where just switching back and forth between tabs in the browser would cause the tab to reload, and once I exited the browser to my home screen, I knew I was going to see a "loading..." box. Is there a way to improve this without updating if I don't like the improvements?

4. Are there any battery life improvements with updating to JellyBean, or the opposite? Not having the phone activated doesn't give me an accurate assessment of the battery life.

5. Since I am rooted with s-off, where would I find the rooted update? Would I need to backup my apps with a program like titanium?

6. Any other issues I may be unaware of?

ok so i numbered your questions to make it easier to answer....so here goes:

1. nothing really. jellybean is just software so you can always flash something different if you want to....it is not permanent.

2.i never use pda net. but wifi tether should work. plus many roms have the sprint hotspot hacked as well.

3.yes many roms will have performance tweaks that will help out with memory management. also you have recovery now and wiping dalvik cache and cache will help to keep the phone running smooth.

4.battery improvement may come from the rom to some degree. but most will come from the kernel.

5. most of your roms/kernels/and shipped roms and firmware can be found here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/614073-list-utilities-roms-kernels.html

6.nope you are s-off so just flash away as you like.....the above list has a staff picks section that has some great suggestions for roms to choose from.

now go and get your flash on:D:D:D

Wish I could remember which version of TWRP it is that won't work with the new firmware touchpanel upgrade.

Not sure if it was 2.4.1.0 and above that would work with it or if you have to have one higher than that.

To be safe, if you are planning on flashing the TP upgrade, I would bump up the level of your recovery.

The good thing is that the good Capn' provides the firmware update and the tp upgrade and downgrade file as separate flashes.

2.4.0.0 was the version that didn't like the TP update. ;):)

I still haven't updated the TP firmware, mine ain't broke, no need to fix it. :p

I need some clarification on this. Back with the EVO 4G OG, OTA's would get rooted and become available to flash for root users. I remember flashing a gingerbread update while still keeping my apps.

I'd rather not flash an entire rom, effectively erasing everything I already have as far as apps and everything, unless I can do that while keeping everything, other than settings.

Are there still rooted updates around? If not, any suggestion on the safest steps I should take to be able to restore what I have after flashing?

Make yourself a nandroid back up. download Titanium back up. Back up all of your apps and data. With the nandroid back up, if you should flash a rom or brick your phone, you will always have a way back to square one. after making a Ti back up, you can flash the ROM of your choosing then run a Titanium restore. all of your apps and data will magically appear back on your phone.

There are some ROMs out there that have an OTA updater built in. MeanBean ROM has this. Every so often when the dev makes an update to the rom, you will get notification. Accept, download and flash. Simple as that. Being s-off, you can go find the latest rooted firmware update and bring your phone up to date.

flashing the stock rooted roms on top of another stock rooted rom should be fine without wiping(i would at least wipe dalvik cache and cache). you will keep your apps and its data. but if you flash a custom rom then i always recommend a clean wipe........but if you want, you can flash just the updated rom on top of as well without wiping. to be safe make a nandroid backup, before doing so.

and like mike said you can make a nandroid backup use tb to back your apps and data. then flash the rom of your choice and restore your apps and its data with no issues. now your settings and such will have to be redone, but at least your data will be saved.

for stock rooted roms as well as custom roms you can go here:

hope that helps.
