deanwards,
There are several ways...here's a few:
1. Do you have the SuperUser app in your app drawer? If yes, then you probably are
2. Download Android Terminal Emulator (free in the Market); enter "su" (long-press menu key to see the keyboard); if you see the "#" prompt, then yes, you are rooted, otherwise, you'll see the "$" prompt
3. Download drocap2 (free in the Market); when you press "start" and then shake the phone (carefully), you should see a notification at the top or an error message in the middle of the screen indicating that this is a root-only app; if you are rooted, a snapshot of your screen will be saved in your photo gallery
4. From the Android SDK "tools" directory on your PC (or Mac), type "adb shell"; again, if you see the "#" prompt, then you are rooted; if you see the "$" prompt, then not so much
Hope this helps.
Sounds like you might want to be rooted?
Just a quick background: rooting the Eris requires that you get a custom recovery partition installed (this is usually Amon_RA's). Then, you can either flash an "update.zip"-type file to give you root capabilities OR you can flash a custom rooted ROM. All of the methods below do these things.
Start here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/163116-eris-rooting-methods.html
Inside this thread, the top two thread links are probably the easiest:
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html (jcase) - is the easiest, but its documentation is a little sparse; this is also a "donate" app (not necessarily free); I would suggest you also read through the next thread, which is
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html (erisuser1) - this is a very detailed, well-documented (with screenshots to boot) thread that shows you how to root using only your phone (no PC is needed)
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html (surgeon0214 / alprazolam) - this thread shows you how to root from a Mac or a PC using the Android SDK (software development kit); you need a little proficiency with your PC (or Mac), but you'll learn a lot while doing (or even reading through) this method
The above three methods all basically work the same way (i.e., via wag3slav3's mid.txt root exploit), but arrive at this place in slightly different ways.
These final two methods are the "old school" methods:
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html (grdlock) - this is the "old school" method that only phones with a certain HBOOT (bootloader) version; your best bets would be to try one of the above methods before tackling this one
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/72676-application-eris-master-application-r00t.html (eclips3 / jamezelle) - this is the original "easy" method and basically automates the prior "old school" method; there are limitations with this method too; suggest trying one of the top three first
I would suggest you start reading through some of the above threads first...there are lots of other things you'll need to know too...you'll understand once you know more.
Hope this helps. Cheers!
deanwards,
Well, that was quick...
... What do you want to do now that you are rooted (i.e., what are you looking to get out of being rooted)?Which method did you use and did you flash a custom ROM?
