Root ROOTING For Dummies

I just rooted thanks alot for this.. but when using wireless tether i connect fine according to my network list but i dont actually get any data comming through and when i go to the next step to enable access control it doesnt show my computer? any ideas?

Ok, scared as heck but I am taking the plunge. Just to recap, I believe I am ok to root by looking at the software number (3.29.651.5)?

Also, before I do this, I should be updating: 1) Firmware 2) Update profile 3) Update PRL 4) HTC software update? If I do this, will it update to the 3.30?

I swear.. this Wireless Tether is giving people hell..

Do you have a connection when not using Access Control?

^^^ I forgot, I am using Launcher Pro. Can I root when this is running, or do I need to uninstall this?

Don't worry about updating your device any. Don't want to risk you getting the new firmware 3.30. Not completely sure if it is actually the firmware or build of the device that prevents it from rooting. Haven't had a chance to check into it. Anyone?

You are good to go, Mugs. When you ROOT, everything will be shut down. So nothing to worry about. You won't lose any information, unless you decide to Format your device. Other than that.. HAPPY ROOTING!

Excellent! With this quote in mind, however, does it mean that once I am rooted I should NOT update anything manually?

Generally yes. BUT, I do update all of my apps just like always. Just DO NOT accept an OTA software update. That is basically what he was getting at.

Awesome. Everyone is doing extremely well helping each other out. Kudos everyone.

Thanks Matlock for all your help. Here's a question for you.

I followed your instructions and rooted my Evo. Perfect! No problems.

Then I installed SetCPU 2.0.4 to help with battery life. But there lies my issue. I really do not understand how to use the app and how it helps with my battery life. My ignorance lies simply in the understanding the settings.

What does scaling mean (userspace, ondemand, performance)? Which one do I set it to?

What is the best way to conserve battery life with the profiles?

What does the "set on boot" option mean? do I check it or not?

Lastly, since I installed the app, I have noticed that my battery gets really hot when its charging via an outlet. Also my screen no longer locks when charging. I must now manually hit the power bottom to lock the phone.

I was not experiencing this previously. I'm not sure what I did, or what I can do to make it right.

Please help. Anyone. Thanks.

I had the same issue. Here's what I did. I enabled wifi-encryption and disabled access-control and set channel to auto. That worked out for me.

Give it a swirl
