Root ROOTING For Dummies

I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. I was one of the ones that got root on the step by step procedure before unrevoked came out. When I did this I had to use Amon Ra recovery. What do I need to do to go to Clockwork recovery so that I can fully use Rom Manager Premium Clockwork Mod.

All rooted now. A few quick questions. Do I need to be running a custom rom to flash a new kernal? Also, I am looking for a great stable rom up to date with the latest htc software. I also want to maximize my battery performance. Any suggestions?

Also, A for some reason I can't flash clockwork recovery from Rom Manager. It doesn't ask for permissions. It just asks varifies the type of phone and then says there was an error when trying to flash the recovery. I just left it alone. Do I need to worry about this. I just figured I would use the manual way to flash. I would like to use Rom Manager but I continue to run into this issue. Any ideas?

You can DL ROM Manager and flash CW recovery from there.

No, you don't need to run a custom ROM to flash a new kernel.

You can find plenty of stable ROM's here: XDA HTC Supersonic-ROM's I would start at all the ROM's running the 3.70xxxx build (I'm assuming you have the newer hboot).

Your battery life and performance depends a lot on the kernel you're using. There are plenty of threads here about people's experiences with kernel/ROM combo's you can read up on.

Can someone tell me exactly what to type to see the top 5 processes using cpu and battery. I type in top -m 5 -n 1 and it doesn't seem to work (not sure where spaces go maybe). I am using emulator.
thanks

wow thanks for the quick reply. Yes I spaced them, at the end is that a zero or a capital o?

I tried both but nothing.

I have rooted but not flashed anything yet, I am not in a 4G area so I can't check :(

Install busybox either through titanium backup or from the market, then try the grep again.

Does the kernal you are using increase your battery life? And have you done the tweak? I'm a complete noob and xda is not as noob friendly as the people on these threads.

Yes, the kernel (Netarchy 4.3 cfs more havs) I'm using has increased my performance/battery life. I am not using the collin_ph battery tweak, however, I'm using this kernel in conjunction with SetCPU to over/underclock and currently get on average 48 hours off one charge.

Before using using na 4.3 cfs more havs, I was using na 4.2.1 cfs more havs and experiencing similar battery life.

You can read about it in greater detail elsewhere, but to expound just a little bit on what frenchy said, the reason he's not using the collin_ph battery tweak is because he's using both a kernel with HAVS and setcpu. The collin_ph battery tweak is meant to do the things that HAVS and setcpu with profiles would do, automatically (but a little different). Thus, you need a kernel that doesn't affect voltage, and you can't use setcpu with it, as it will conflict with changing the frequency.

I love posting in matlocks threads. I could come in here and say my nose is running and he thanks me for it!

It makes me look more important on the forum. lol

What recovery are you using? I simply followed the guide given in this thread to root. I tried to use the Rom manager to flash clockwork recovery, but for some reason it did not work? Should I use the Amon Ra Recovery? Anything else I need to know before downloading the same kernal and rom that you have?

Oh ok. So your kernal is a beta release? Would you recommend it for a noob?

Guys, sigh...I could use some help. New EVO about a week ago..loving it! Will love it more after ROOT!

2.02 HBOOT
3.30.651.3

I used unrevoked this morning on my EVO , and it says pushing recovery, then running root...then I get the message "failed to get root, is your firmware too new?"
then phone rebooted. It DOES say s-off now, any ideas?

Root only apps don't work ( Rom manager, Titanium Backup,etc.)...it seems that I don't have a recovery image installed. Terminal emuloator results from typing SU= "access denied", or a similar message.

I rooted my old Hero last year the long way, (copy and paste) so I was very excited to be able to use the quick way.

My first plan is to get rooted, so I can use a few root only apps, delete some bloatware, then install Amon RA recovery, and finally, later in the week flash a rom, maybe. Hoping to keep all setup with stock rom for now.

Thanks for any advice!

PS I'm now into hour 4 of this 10 minute process! LOL
