Root ROOTING For Dummies

I was using RA but I flashed over to Clockwork and backed up successfully from there and it worked. RA just doens't work well in my phone somehow...

Glad you figured it out. If you decide to use Amon RA in the future, make sure it's the new version (2.1.1).

Guys, sigh...I could use some help. ...

Got it working! YAY! I uninstalld the program unrevoked installed (Z???exploit??), then re-downloaded Unrevoked 3.3, but this time it is 3.3.1. This time it worked. Dunno, (probably user error!!!) but I'm happy now! Next is to get Amon RA vs Clockworkmod for my recovery...but lunch first!!! Been at this for 4 hours! LOL

Hi. Great information here. I read several pages, but did not see the answer.

If I root my EVO and I do not installed a custom ROM nor a custom Kernel, will I be able to turn on wireless thethering on my EVO?

You don't need a custom ROM or a custom kernal to run most root apps. Something like setcpu won't work right out of the box, but normal apps like wifi tether, titanium backup, etc. don't need to run on a custom ROM.

Is the short answer YES? :D

I notice this is primarily written for Windows users. I see Mac instructions sprinkled in there, but has anyone done a Mac-focused step-by-step for idiots like myself? I'd be using unrevoked 3.31.

Ok so i was attempting to root my phone today, and i'm not sure what happened but now my phone wont even turn on. I followed the directions step by step, double clicked and started running the unrevoked reflash package. The program started running and re-booted my phone once. On the second time, it turned my phone off and never came back on. Waited probably 30 minutes, and still nothing. I try to manually turn my phone on and nothing happens. When its plugged in to the computer, it wont even say its charging. Anybody have any thoughts on what happened or what i should do?

Did you try pulling the battery out, putting it back in, then trying to turn the phone back on?

Hello All - First, thank you to Matlock. I have read every single post here and many on XDA, even the posts with questions that are clearly referenced in the OP! I rooted my EVO about a month ago and have tried out a few ROMs using ROM manager as well as supersonic for the Nov. OTA. I've downloaded some ROOT only apps from the market and one manual swype app.
Here's my the reason for my post - I just tried to unlock and got a message on the unlock pattern saying to wait 30 seconds before trying again. Once I got in, the weather widget thought I was in Seattle (I'm in Los Angeles). Is it possible that removing the security enabled me to get an app that gave someone the ability to remotely hack my phone?

Yes, i tried taking the battery out for a few minutes, then putting it back in, and still got nothing. The phone wont turn on, and even when i try to charge it with a wall charger, it wont charge. The LED light on the front wont even turn on.

Ok, scratch that. I took the battery out again, popped it back in, and now my phone appears to be functioning. So what do you guys recommend? Do i try running the root program again or just forget it? Also, i just noticed the unrevoked package was still up, and said that root was not achieved and said something about my maleware i think. what does that mean?

That's good. I was going to say, I can't imagine you actually completely bricking your phone from this.

1) Find out what state your phone is currently in by turning off the phone, then turning it back on while pressing and holding the volume down button. That will take you to hboot. Do you see s-on or s-off? I'm thinking it didn't get far enough to give you s-off. While you're there, try to go to recovery, and see if you have clockwork. If not, unrevoked didn't get too far at all.

2) As for that warning, it's probably about making sure you don't have a virus scanner or anything like that running while you try to run unrevoked. It will interfere. Also, make sure you don't have HTC sync installed. Those two things could easily cause such problems.

Well, i turned off the phone and went into hboot. My phone says S-OFF on the top line. Does this mean i'm done? Do i go on to updating the PRL & Profile?

S-OFF is full root, but I have no way of knowing what unrevoked didn't finish doing. Did you boot into recovery to see if you have clockwork? I can't imagine you not having it since that's how it flashes unrevoked forever (s-off).

Once you do that, boot into android and install a terminal emulator if you don't have one. Open it, and type "su" without quotes, then enter. If the prompt changes from $ to #, and gives you no other output, you're good to go.

Even if that last part doesn't work right, we can still fix things. S-off is technically all that you need.

Ok so you completely lost me at booting into android, and everything after that. Sorry, i'm not the most tech savvy guy, it took about a month of reading before i even talked myself into trying this.
I did try wireless tether, since thats a root only app, and it worked for me, my ipod picked up the signal right away. Does this mean i'm good to go? At the moment, i'm really only interested in getting rid of some of the bloatware and the wireless tether. I dont really know enough about roms and kernels yet to want to mess around with them. For my purposes, am i done or do i need to do more?
Also, this is a non android question, but my laptop wont recognize any wireless signals except for my home internet. Any idea why this is? my ipod will recognize my neighbors signal, my signal and now my phone, but my computer only does one. any suggestions on how to fix?

So you used wifi tether, and you have the superuser app, which prompted you to grant su permissions when you ran wifi tether? If that is the case, then you have root. All I meant by boot into android was turn the the phone on normally. This is the terminal emulator I was referring to:

Android Terminal Emulator - Android app on AppBrain

Oh, did you ever verify that you can boot into recovery?

Yes, when i started the wireless tether program, its asked to grant permissions.
And yes, i can boot into recovery and have clockwork.

Sounds good to me. Sounds like everything is done. Do you remember what unrevoked said it was doing when the phone turned off?

Yeah it said that it was rebooting, but then when i pulled it back up later it said something about my maleware being to new or something...? But as long as my phone is working and you think everything is good, i'm satisfied. I cant thank you enough for the help! Now on to reading about roms!

ok so far nobody has answered my questions but whatever idc, now i need help with something else.

I installed the driver and i opened unrevoked3 and plugged in my phone as it says now it wants to install Android Composite ADB Interface and unrevoked isn't doing anything yet. What should I do?

Thanks

I just used unrevoked 3.31 on EVO version 3.70.......... It turned S-off but I dont see the Superuser Icon and when I try to use wifi tether is says my kernel is not rooted. What gives
