Root ROOTING For Dummies

Search for busybox in the market, download and install it. You will then be able to run that command.

I downloaded Beta 4 from here:

I'm not sure what the recovery is, but I am rooted with Unrevoked, if that tells you anything.
I wiped data and cache, but didn't see anything in there about dalvik cache.
1) You must have Clockwork. If you just used what you got from unrevoked, and you can't find wipe dalvik, then I guarantee it
2) Wipe dalvik is under advanced.
3) Did you flash gapps, and did you flash it right after flashing the ROM in the same recovery session?
Only if you run into problems. Wort case scenario is that unrevoked just won't run. If that happens, make sure you have the drivers installed correctly, you don't have htc sync installed, your av isn't running, etc. etc. Just follow all instructions. If you've gone through all that, and still have problems, a factory reset usually fixes it. Of course, if you run into problems, feel free to post where you're at, and what errors you got, if any. That will help determine if you need to or not. A lot of people are able to run it without wiping data. Feel free to try it first.

Thanks, I will be using a Mac so it should be a heck of a lot easier to root. At the present I just plan to root only. I'm going to study up on the the different ROM's before I try install any.

Well, I did it. And it looks to be successful.
Superuser Permissions app now shows up in app drawer. I'll d/l a terminal app to double check it.

Welcome to all the new ROOTers!
Around 3AM last night, I got the urge to get CyanogenMod7 and flash some "moar bacon!" (Twitter Comment by ChrisSoyars)
It's outstanding, to-say-the-least!
I am seeing screen animations, and game animations, I never saw in CM6.
Whether it was CyanogenMod team, or AOSP who created such an outstanding ROM, kudos to them all!
No Force Closes, no problems yet.
The only hiccup I had was when the ROM was automatically installing my preinstalled Apps from CM6. Got most of them installed, but not all. No biggie, had App List Backup ready, and it finished the job.
Anyone who is thinking about CyanogenMod7 - Nightlies, and isn't afraid of a few bugs (if any so far), I recommend downloading it and testing the sucker out.
If you do decide to, please register with CyanogenMod Forums and let the developers know of any bugs you may encounter. It will help them out, and us out a lot.
A stable version is just around the corner too, for all of those who would rather wait.
Did I mention how much I love the old Tube-Style TV Screen ON/OFF option? OMG! It's sweet! Makes me feel like a Man in an Electronic store!

Well, you've convinced me.... I'm doing a NAND as we speak. I'll be flashing to CM7 ASAP.

Yesterday I unrooted my brother in laws EVO for him. He decided he didn't need any of the features of the root and just wanted to be able to accept the OTA updates. I told him just accept them and they might unroot your phone. He was afraid and asked me to unroot it. I was a little distracted and rushed through it. Apparently, unlike rooting, your phone returns to stock when you unroot.
He lost a few contacts all his apps and his settings. I'm now the asshole amongst that side of the family now... He's got a job where his contact list is very important. Anyway... something in a large red font warning people to back up first would have saved me this scorn.
Anyway... live and learn.

Thanks to all. I am new to the EVO but, have been enjoying the different customizations available. Sadly, I have to take my phone in to Sprint to be serviced, needs a new speaker again, and needed to un-root the phone. Your advice and step by step instructions really helped.

And thanks Matlock for the great guide. It's awesome! What ROM would you suggest? I tried the warm2 RLS 4 and I went through 2 batteries by 2 pm, using it about the same as I was using it with the stock ROM.
I was thinking about a Cyanagen ROM or the baked snacks ROM. I am currently downloading apps and what not on a freshly rooted ROM and going to make a backup of it then play around with some different custom ROMs.
Also what app backup program do you use? Titanium Backup? Or a different one? Do you use that same program you use to back them up to reinstall?

You are very welcome.
I personally perfer CyanogenMod (Nightly) as my ROM of-choice. I could recommend you using a Stable version like 6.1.2.
I have had little to no problems with it (Nightly) and the only two things that do not work (4G/HDMI) I do not use (but soon 4G will be working, currently in the Alpha stage). So I have no problem with it.
I don't use an App Backup on my device. Rebel? Yes I am! lol
I use the Nand Backup to keep complete copies of everything on my device. I don't have alot of important stuff on it, and the things that are important, I keep in two locations: my SD Card, and an external HD. If anything should happen to my device, it will probably be a Major, rather than a Minor problem; because of what I use my device for.
Mostly FLASHing ROMs and playing around with different features and Recoveries and Third-Party applications (that I do not recommend using).
I do not trust Titanium Backup 100% for how I'd want to use it. So I steer clear of it for that. I do however use it to Create a Backup of Applications every now-and-again for my close Friends to use so they can try out a paid app before they buy it (Only 15 minutes to try out an app?? Thats outrages!! If you are lucky, the developers take it upon themselves to do the Refunds, rather than Google.)
On a side-note..
I had to flash back to CyanogenMod6 - Nightly because CM7 Build #0's GPS feature is broke. So at the moment, I can't use CM7 until the GPS is fixed; since I use the GPS more than any other app on the device.
But I will say this, CM7 is a freakin' awesome ROM! I can't get enough of the old Tube TV style ON/OFF feature! hahahaa

I am completely sure I do not have to say what I am about to say, but for the sake of everyone else..
NEVER, EVER, EVER.... Rush through a ROOT or an UN-ROOT! EVER.
But of course, don't beat yourself up over it. And I am sure you aren't.
And yes, I shall add a little note in the UN-ROOTing section to make a Backup prior to ROOTing.
This seems to be a feature in Gingerbread as well. I've tried a couple of ROMs and seen that animation when turning the screen off. It is pretty sweet.

Yeah, it's a Gingerbread feature; which is what CM7 is, 2.3.
I think I waisted more battery playing that damn feature than anything else. lol

Go to unrevoked, and you'll see what phones it works for.
What is your baseband (radio) version? It says in hboot (below where it says s-on). You already have s-on, so no need to run the s-on tool. Question, though - Did you ever have full root and a custom ROM? What version of unrevoked did you use in the first place? That's a pretty old hboot. If you did have full root before, and want to wipe everything out, I'll give you the link to the correct PC36IMG. I just need to know which radio version you have (More than one OTA used that hboot version).

lol, I've always wanted to say that.
It's a really old saying. If you download CyanogenMod from ROM Manager, it will ask if you want to download the GApps as well.
But you can also download them from the CyanogenMod forums. Remember to pick the correct GApps pack, if you download from the Forums. There will be a list though. The EVO 4G GApps are HDPI.

Flashing the CyanogenMod is just like flashing any other ROM. Refer to the guide. And use the Manual Method.
(I only have a how-to for ClockworkMod only at the moment with flashing ROMs. Remember to use 2.6.0.1 if you are going to use ClockworkMod; soon I will have a how-to for Amon_RA aswell)
I don't use Titanium Backup personally, since I go from ROM to ROM, which can cause instabilities if you Restore apps from one ROM to another. My personal opinion. (The verdict is still out on that as far as everyone else)
I did happen to use App List Backup I have listed in the guide, when I switched to CM7. And it worked pretty well. You do still have to go through and download them all manually. But at least you do not have to search for them all over again. Not to mention, you can go "Hmm.. I didn't really use that App.." or "I didn't like that App..".
I screwed myself when I tried to use Market Updater; which makes all the downloaded Market Apps with the Auto Update feature, checked. It basically deleted all of my apps from the market I downloaded. So I gotta re-download all of them for me to be able to get notifications for updates/auto updates.
